Michaela Shiffrin Vs Lara Gut-Behrami | Solden WC GS Race 2021 | Skiing

An analysis of Michaela Shiffrin’s win at the first World Cup race of the 2021/22 ski racing season. She barely pips Lara Gut-Behrami for the win so I wanted to look at what possible made the difference between the two.

Great video and analysis, Tom. Side by side slo-mo comparison is phenomenal.

Interesting hip flexion differences seen in their respective tucks into the first few gates. Great video Tom! Amazing skiing from these women.

Great analysis there Tom yes keep them coming. One can certainly pick up speed by pumping on skis through rollers.

Hi, really nice work, keep on - I definetly like your attitude and language. One thing I want to ad is the weight difference of the two. So checking different sources Michaela seems to be 4-6 kg heavier than Lara (64-58 // 66-60 other source). So 4-6 Kg or 10% + is making a difference especially in the flats. But you are right, as Michaela is also 10 cm taller - the tuck position and staying low over that little bump that positioned exactly where the virtual bump of the turn sets in - made it for her. But weight is a factor for sure. Keep on Going !!!!

Excellent analysis. There is an old (actually not so old) adage that strength gives you speed in the ski racing community. Pressuring the skis laterally using the sidecut and also pressuring the ski fore and aft creates reverse camber which can accelerate the skier's center of mass down the shortest path (fall line). Most skiers (e.g. club racers) unfortunately use this acceleration in the wrong manner. Most skiers will be launched mostly upwards, rather than slightly upwards and the CoM going down the fall line with the skis remaining in contact with the snow. GS skis (193 cm for men and 188 cm) for women are nowadays just planks since the FIS adopted the 35m radius rule a decade ago and now at 30 m radius. I think why Alice Robinson has for the most part been successful in GS (not this year at Solden) is because she is so much stronger than other women. She can bend the skis to get maximum energy stored in the skis to be released in the end of the turn. However, her technique and smoothness is not on par with Shiffrin.

Enjoying these Tom. It’s why my much lighter son always thrashes me on SkierX courses. And the fact he’s a much better skier! 😂

John white you SHOULD be faster than your son, you have more mass, so therefore your son MUST be a better skier

Power, strenght, and endurance advantage to Shiffrin. Keep a close eye on the stabilty of bio-mechanical form and function from head to ski on snow. Ultimately, oustanding training on and OFF snow.

Nice analysis. But in the end should be more attention what happened and why was Mikaela faster since Lara was few gates before finish - on finish line. Pumping skis is more - less better short term solution - more vertical movement means energy and speed blows in direction of movement - more down or up...not forward in direction of skiing. Also worse aerodynamic solution. Mikaela still low what is better long term solution and where all factors - aerodynamic, pushing outside ski forward, transition of energy in low position helps her to be first on line in finish.

Hi Tom! Nice video, but (as always), interpretation of 'pump-track' works only at low speed, at GS speeds one can neglect it compared to air resistance. There is limited amout of power (force x speed) human body can produce and as accleration is function of force, therefore acceleration = power/speed/mass. Put some number in and at GS speeds this force is really small. Add to this a simple fact that force propduced by muscules are more or less perpendicular to snow surface... But at the end, I agree that Lara lost this race beause of stadning up a bit too much and threfore produced more air resistance.

Thanks Jurij. After I had edited the video I was wondering if really it was more just air resistance. It was the only thing I could really spot as a big difference on the flats there. And maybe Michaela has better wax and structure too. Big difference being relative for these athletes of course.

The other thing I’d like to know is how fast each one of them came off the steep. The thing about that pitch, is that it really is so steep that you can give away time on the way down it, and Shiffrin didn’t give away much, if you can come off the steep fast. Arguably River came off the steep faster than Odermatt as well, but without a speed trap there it’s hard to say for sure… so how much of a factor was how Michaela skied the flats in addition to how she came off the steep, it’s really hard to say when there’s such small margins in it. Other factors could be the skis, Michaela’s bases just may have been faster on the flats as well, there’s so many unknowns when breaking these things down. And for the record, nothing wrong about having “style” as a component of how you view these races, I just think that context is too big of a factor to leave out and it all too often is in the world of ski instruction.

Just an amateur fan here, but I wanted to point out that Mikaela used to be notorious for picking up time at the bottom of a run. Like scary, where the hell did that come from, notorious.

It might mean Mikeala is back . Its why she has 70 wins. A fighter all the way. Also Mikeala may be entering a lot more speed events this year. If she stays injury free she will destroy the womans, and mens , all time best ski racer that ever lived title. Im pulling for her. Should be a great womans race season.

She will be racing in a lot more speed events. She said that she wants to race all five events at the Olympics, and she knows she'll need the points to qualify for all of them. We all know that won't be a problem, but she's said she wants the Overall Globe anyway. I can't wait 😃
