This song moves my soul!

In November 1979, Smith suffered a breakdown that led to his recommitment to Christianity. The next day he auditioned for a new contemporary Christian music (CCM) group, Higher Ground, as a keyboardist and got his job. His vocal were heard on much of CCM radio with the single "I Am." It was on his first tour with Higher Ground, playing mostly in churches, that Smith was finally able to put the drugs and alcohol behind him.

Thank God it was drugs and alcohol. We forgive that. If it was sex, his career would have been permanently over. Christians don't forgive sexual sin. Why? Because we all are guilty and hide it. When it gets out, we pounce on it so hard in an act of hate against our own sin. The biggest sexual sin that EVERY boy and man does all through is masturbation. We haven't come to grips with what that's all about nor understand it, but we're told its wrong so we just hide it and never talk about it. Until someone gets found out - then they are forever banished.

This should be released to Michael W Smith to record; I heard it originally b4 he broke off from Higher Ground in the 80s in Howard Beach NY. We knew he’d make it from just him and a piano. The world needs this song now, we need Michael.

I have too, literally. I THOUGHT it was Higher Ground who sang it.

I have looked for this song all over the internet and this is the first time I have found it. Thanks so much for sharing it. I wish it were straight from the studio, but, perhaps, there is some royalty legalities preventing that.

I thank Holy Spirit guided me to this song sang by Choir at Benny Hinn's video Midnight Attack Caleb 300 . The song dispels darkness and depression, brings joy, peace and renew my faith in I am. The name God gave to Moses' question on What is Your name? His name is " I am " . I am the Root of David, the Bright and Morning Star.

I much prefer this version though. But every other version I can find online is the choral version. This the only one I've found of this, the original song.

Hi I also really would like a digital recording of this. I saw him with Higher Ground back in 1980 and have this album but without the "I AM" track. I had a 45rpm disk many years ago but somehow it got lost in a move. Thanks!
