Michael Sweet of Stryper Talks about his "ROCK SCENE"

Фильм және анимация

Music has always been a big part of Michael Sweet’s life. At a very early age, his parents took him, his brother Rob and sister to their first concert at the L.A. Forum to see the King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley. If that wasn’t enough, it was also the night that Led Zeppelin was in attendance. The show was legendary. It was then that Michael decided that music would be his career.
His father (a country/rock-a-billy singer) would take him & his brother to the studio with him. Michael & Rob would play at the sessions. At 12 years old, he joined his (brother’s) first band “Fire Storm”. They changed their name to ‘Rocks', then "Rocks Regime", then in 1983, they changed their name to “Stryper”.
Since Michael was on “the scene” at such a young age, the Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll soon caught up with him. Feeling “burnt out” he and the band decided they needed a big change. So they decided to do something new, something that they believed in. They decided to devote the band to God.

I have been a fan of Stryper since 1984, and I really loved the Soldiers Under Command album which I listened to constantly. I saw them in concert in 1985, and they totally rocked! It's so good to see that they are still around and recording and playing. :)

Why is it when Michael talks, you just want it to continue, even if you heard the stories before. Because he is that good, so inspiring, whilst remaining humble all the time. One of the last true heroes of our times.

I don't think they do know How much they have added to music, they are EXTREMELY talented and BLESSED, I pray they know how many souls and lives they have changed, however there is No one letting them know this in this Dark age. I wish I could have met them all, back in the day..... Cheers

Growing up? I got a lot of flack from "metal" friends about being a Stryper fan. I was the best musician of all my friends and I ALWAYS stuck to my guns about my admiration for Michael Sweet in particular. His vocals and musicianship are second to none. And Stryper always had that heavy edge to their guitar sound. And in all my defending Stryper? the topic of God or religion never came up. My friends were always cool like that as we all had different faiths and religions and the conversations never went there. Now 30 years later? I was right and now in 2022? My middle aged metal friends respect my love for Stryper.

  • @diserna

As MS said there are a lot of other easier gimmicks for a band to pick. God really is not a popular choice of a schtick as let's say Glamrockers, or make up clad KISS. Ziggy Stardust Ring a bell? Singing about Christ is not usually used as a gimmick and anyone thinking it is being used probably would not understand the meanings to the lyrics Of a christian rock band like STRYPER. How many unbelievers would actually write lyrics about salvation and Christ with any real meaning? I think its Great you been playing guitar 39 years dude. Good stuff. You can enjoy Satan, but I have news for you about his plight. Satan gets bound and hog tied come his day of reckoning and I personally look forward to it. God bless you dude.
