    This is something that people who do not sing can not comprehend. It has nothing to do self-confidence, but rather, standards. Most really good singers are so hypercritical of their own voices that sometimes they can't stand to hear it unaccompanied. I totally understand where Mr. Stipe is coming from.

    One of the most iconic voices in music history, instantly recognisable and capable of passing thru so much emotion even if you found the lyrics impenetrable. Oh and in my humble opinion, the greatest rock band ever, behind him too. Still miss these guys.

    It's so worthwhile watching this whole episode on Netflix. Even in separate interviews the chemistry of the four band members is palpable. You can easily see how they made one another better. And they all offer great reflections on this classic recording.

    I like hearing or seeing rough cuts by artists and the insecurities they have; it proves that they're only human! Finished versions full of confidence and commitment seems so beyond what normal humans can do... but there was a path before they arrived at that.

    It sounded beautiful. I agree with Peter, I am interested let them out. We appreciate the outtakes and the rough drafts, it's all a part of the journey to the published piece and worth the review. Golly I miss seeing y'all live!

    I like to hear demos and outtakes especially of my favourite bands or songs it's good to hear how the song started and hear the musical differences lyrical difference tempos, arrangements and how songs grow into the final version,

    Like any artist - a painter, a sculptor, a toy maker, a blue printer, or a musician - Michael is hyper-critical of his own talent, seeing and hearing "flaws" that are perfection to his audience.

    Out of time and Automatic for the people are probably my two favourite albums, brings back such mixed feelings of happiness after spending a year in Australia and sadly a few months after I returned home l lost my beautiful mum . Beautiful songs !

    Listening to demos is like reading a rough draft of a great novel. They didn't release the demo for a reason...but once the great work is released and accepted, its nice to go back and hear or see or read how that thing got made and the revisions it went through to become what it became.

    I never liked it but heard an analysis of the musical merits on youtube and begrudgingly thought maybe I had misjudged. Still for as big as that song was I cannot help but prefer any of about 75% of their songs other than that, at least of their output to that point.

    @@etamommy I think it’s a combination of songwriting skill, musicianship, timing and luck as to how any song is received. A whole lot of stars need to align for a hit. You make a good point in that some artists have better songs, which weren’t liked as much as others or which weren’t released. There are many album tracks or b-sides from many artists, which were superior to single releases.

    My favorite singers have always been those that would never win, the Voice, I don’t want polished perfection, I want raw emotion, personality and honesty, and Michael’s voice is all of that. But we are all our own worst critics and I can definitely understand not liking your own voice or performance; it’s normal

    This is such a beautiful clip. Many people hate hearing the sound of their own voice, but Michael Stipe's voice has always struck me (and obviously many others) as sincere and beautiful. This cut is hearing a great song in progress. :)

    The demo tracks from Fables and Life's Rich Pageant are FANTASTIC. I made playlists from both ordered them according to the album release and they get played more than the final tracks. Just listen to how cool the guitar sounds in the Begin the Begin demo, SO COOL. The Demo's are fully formed musically it's amazing that aside from Stipe's unfinished vocals the songs are whole and complete on the demos from being played live already. They are like a little live performance of the songs but with the advantage of studio recording.

    I love the demos. It shows the process that they took to get to the final version. As a fan I find the demos to be like live performances… slight variations of the original that make the song even better with each version you hear.

    The thing michael needs to realise about thise songs is its not JUST his voice. Its how someone couod be so sweet kind sensitive and empathetic enough in this world to write a song this beautiful. His voice is great. Still to this day. But things like his Colbert version of No Time For Love Like Now belong in the world. There will never be a more raw and complete version recorded than the first time he performed it on tv at the start of the pandemic. But for some reason i have to watch a derez version some dude uploaded when it was removed off The Late Shows video lineup

    Michael has a great and totally unique voice, but when you hear it isolated you clearly see that REM is soooo much more than just "Michael's voice being supported by a band".

    I remember an REM engineer once saying that when he did playbacks with most bands, each of the members would want their parts pushed up in the mix, but with REM, each of the members wanted their parts to be moved lower in the mix.
