i've always liked him as in actor even before Smallville. He doesn't match an evil character, but as Lex, he was amazing. Though gotta admit, he's way more better as a comedian. That's the reason why he quit Smallville. He feels more comfortable as a comedian actor than a serious one. he will be missed on smallville.

@henf5671 I don't think it's a question of salary, even though Michael was making enough to keep himself fed for YEARS. I think he had creative differences with TPTB at the studio, or else he just didn't want to be typecast in future years by playing Lex.

Although, unfotunately when he plays a comedy role, it doesn't seem to work! Maybe he just needs a better script to work with. Anwesome guy tho. Wish he was better known so that i could seem him being interviewed more here in the UK.
