Phels caresses the water, not fight against it. He looks like water; his body is flexible as water. Amazing.

Phelps has such good rotation. Look at how long he gets on his recovery strokes - two critically important details when it comes to swimming.

1:23 beautifuly demonstrates my lately discovery that the fingers shouldn't be tight together.. as it makes the center of the power catch too far to where your shoulder muscles work instead of big lateral muscles when doing catch with the palm instead. I think I'm not the only one who lived with the tight fingers myth though, as it seems to be more logical at first glance (the paddle area is bigger) ;-)

Filip Haman thanks for pointing this out. I was taught long ago in lessons to keep the fingers together and keep your hand rigid during entry, catch, pull. Seems to look more efficient to have more relaxed hands.

@@honkytonkwoman Back in the day of Mark Spitz, they did experiments on this and found a relaxed (some-what open) and comfortable finger positioning pulled more water than a tightly cinched hand did.

Juan Sebastian Olympic athletes like him are a mixture of genetics and a shit ton of hard work. Of course God has nothing to do with it, but you have to come into this world with the right foundation to get to this level. For example, Michael Phelps, with all the training in the world, wouldn't be where he is today if he were a 5 foot 4 asthmatic.

to the guy below me, u can still look forward or down. looking down reduces drag, makes go a bit faster. face tilting a bit forward means your hips and legs are under water when they should be slightly above water when you tilt your face directly down.

@szupinglee when breathing every two strokes, it is most efficient to hold one arm out a little longer. its not that he doesnt have perfect technique, its actually a better technique when you're swimming 200m and more in freestyle when you might need to breath every two strokes in order to feed all the muscles with enough oxygen.

@szupinglee Freestyle's propulsion is mostly due to hands action. I think Phelp's main winning factor is his underwater dolphin kick plus his excellent energy management. Another big advantage for Phelps is his small head. He doesn't have to raise his head to minimize water resistance. Adding his flexibility and power makes him the best swimmer all around.

Loose fingers give some friction of water between the fingers, which gives more strength to the pull vs a closed hand. Feels better and less tiring too. Was surprising at first, but works. Same for breaststroke.

Interesting thing is, Phelps is not perfectly symmetric in terms of timing. You can see his right arm is out in front a little longer than the left arm. Knowing this helped me realize you don't have to have absolute perfect technique, even the best in the world has some "characteristic flaw" that is due to the asymmetric breathing during free style swimming. I think Phelps biggest advantage is his legs, those leg actions are just incredible.

you're thinking of it all wrong. it's not that he's pulling himself out of the water and jumping... that's his normal body position. what he's doing is letting his body drop below the surface of the water so that there will be little surface drag, then his buoyant force and power lift brings his to the surface again.

thompson seems to be a competetive swimmer who was taught with the "good old fashioned" and a little bit out of date technique...phelps on the other way, was taught by the best and the most qualified coaches plus his body allows him to execute perfectly what's on the "paper"

phelps is like "jumping" when he breathes, that should not be done but with his strength and ability he can do it nice anyway...thompson's style is based on stroking speed but he doesn't stretch his arms well when doing it; I think phelps swimming is more effective because he "grabs" water better than thompson.

he doesn't even breathe. That's how he wins, If you breathe, you will waste so many seconds catching air. I could only do 1 breathe per 2 strokes. If I do more, I will just pass out. I think he did like 1 breathe per 6 strokes.
