MICHAEL McDONALD - A Tribute To The Greatest Backing Vocalist Of All Time
Rick Moranis does a great comedy impression of the blue eyed soul singer of Yacht Rock fame.
Don't ever lose the smooth.

Supposedly Michael McDonald accidentally saw this in a hotel room when it aired the first time. He has said that he was extremely stoned, and got totally confused and disturbed by what he was seeing-really thought it was himself. Wondered if he was having a “psychotic break.” That makes it even more classic

Rick Moranis had a thing for parodying Micheal MacDonald on SCTV. I thought this were hilarious and they still are. They filmed this around and I. The iTV studios in Edmonton. They even have the lobby shots…they did some odd micheal McDonald sketches on the Gary Todd show. Fantastic stuff.

That's hillarious!! one night I was falling asleep during SCTV and caught a bit of 'Crazy hy's' and woke up later to be seeing 'Crazy Joe's drapery and it took me years to differentiate, you mean those were two different entities??! 4650 Landsdowne ave? near Pape?!? they sell TV's and draperies?? I figured it out eventually ☺

My girlfriend and I do this at karaoke. I start singing, while she remains in the audience but near enough the front. With a few seconds to spare, she rushes up, grabs the mic and sings "Such a long way to goooooooo..." Then, she hands me back the mic and takes her seat again.

He had such a long way to go to get back in the recording booth, didn't even have time to put the headphones on.
After playing "Peg" by Steely Dan today, a DJ on XM radio said "Yes, that's Michael McDonald you hear in the background of Peg. "Wait, this just in: that's Michael McDonald you hear in the background of EVERY song in the 70s."

Why?
Just heard Michael McDonald talking to Rick Beato about this incident where he was too stoned after sharing an extra strong doobie with Patrick Simmons, and accidentally saw this on the tv while lying down in his room. He was confused and thought it was him but couldn't remember doing it. Hilarious to hear him telling the tale.

The funniest part is Rick Moranis says "OK, see ya" in Michael McDonald's singing voice when Michael actually does not sound like that when he's just speaking.

In February 2000, there was a Michael McDonald tribute concert at the Shrine in LA. McDonald performing his solo material and many, many songs with the Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins, etc. etc. They played this clip on the video screens by way of introducing Christopher Cross, who came out and did "Ride Like the Wind." I hadn't seen the clip before, but seeing it and then immediately seeing the song live (with M McD coming out to sing those couple of lines) was an experience I'll never forget.
Rick Beato brought me here, lol.

Those of us that have been privy to hearing Michael since the beginning can hear his voice immediately when he's in it even if it's a brand new song. Such a distinctive voice and always a pleasure to hear.

Michael Macdonald was the T-Pain of the 80's
Love Rick !! Canadians are funny !!
So much more than a backing vocalist. His talent was under-utilized when he was with Steely Dan. So wonderful to watch his career progress over the years.
Greatest lead, background vocalist!
I had to see this after he talked about it on the Rick Beato interview. Funny.

This funny sketch is one of the greatest homages ever.

Michael has a true gift. It's like knowing exactly what how and when to say the perfect line. Like on this song, and with On My Own after Patti says "no one said it was easy..." Michael says "but it once was sooo easy..." Perfection.

SCTV! That’s how! Funniest sketch comedy show ever.
SCTV has, on so many countless occasions, made a satire so dead-on that I can no longer think of the real version first (Gino Vanelli's "I Just Wanna Stop" comes to mind). Their genius was soul deep.

I’m in a band that used to cover that Gino Vannelli song. Every time we played it, I had that big grin on my face thinking of Eugene and the gorilla suit.
Wow first he nailed his Carlin impression and then this!
This might be my favorite thing on KZread.
Massive respect for Michael McDonald...suchba unique voice. There are others with impressive backing vocal credits as well eg, Richard Page, Tom Kelly, Timothy B Schmit, Arnold McCullar, David Lesley (RIP), Valerie Carter (RIP), Katie Markowitz, Venetta Fields, Don Henley, Glen Frey, JD Souther, and list goes on. Taking nothing away from Michael who incidentally was being lined up by Toto as a potential lead singer.
Heard this song last night & remembered this LOL!!!
Brilliant!!!!
Yeomobe there! He gone be there
So true... I thought the same thing. He didn't have a big part in the song, but he made it great. This skit is hilarious! Good job 👏! 😂
Love it! I crack up every time!
When I was in Jr. High, the first day of choir class, our teacher let us know that the biggest achievement of his, was being MMD's teacher at that school. He held everyone in class to a high degree that we could never achieve. Now, I share mutual friends with Mike and have spent time with him, and he is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Great Midwestern values that he still has to this day, and he is proud of where he came from & often visits.
too funny! And I say this as a HUGE Doobie Brothers fan (and Steely Dan for what it is worth)!
The CD of the Doobies greatest hits with Michael is an all time favorite.
