I dunno about Oscar worthy but Nia Long gives a noteworthy supporting perf here and its nice to see her contribute to American indie film roles - Janicza Bravo's Lemon as well.

Virgin Islands in the building I was living in 163rd St. Union Ave S. Bronx, New York in 1981 going to Edison Job Corp studying accounting but to say this listening Roxxanne interview give fully flash back cause I was into to the rap music heavy. Where we couldn't wait for Kiss Fm & WBLS comes on with Roxxanne Shante song and with the answer back from from some of those other artistes like UTFO Kangoo Kid ... man rap was more sweeter in them time deh. Roxxanne am so happy for you god know. And before I end this you know before you came out in the social media I use to tell myself I wonder where Rixxanne Shante at if still in the land of the living cause you always heard like some people out or in. Anyway bless up yu self my girl (my bad my lady cause yu an adult now).

This is so amazing to finally see. She was seriously one the first to make it work...A FEMALE BATTLE RAPPER AT 16! Nothing written just off the top wit one take. My favorite joint was LIVE ON STAGE..I rewound that shit till my tape popped and my bro put it back together with scotch tape..DAMN THE 80’s life

Watched it tonight. Very good film. Original music was used from what I could tell. In many places, the lead looked spot on in terms of facial features. There were times with stage lighting that she could be Roxanne's sister. Like the addition of Sparky D. In the 80s, we didn't get alot of photos of the spinoffs like Sparky, Roxanne's Doctor and others. I remember seeing the Real Roxanne a handful of times. This was a good look into her life. It was tough to watch in spots but those pieces needed to be shown for the peaks and valleys. Interesting parts with Nas also. Had no idea. Glad that it was done.

Mimi Robinson Let me know what you think. Are you old enough to have heard the rap battles firsthand? One movie that I instantly compared it to was Straight Outta Compton. Would you compare the two movies?

Tieuel Legacy Hey there. So I never got around to watching it bc all of a sudden, my 7 month old wanted all of my attention. Lol. So I didn't get around to it. Now I was in the 2cd grade when all of this was going on. I remember conversations about this. Only thing I remember with my own ears is a diss song by MC lyte called Roxanne shante is only good for steady f'n. And the lyte went in. And that's all I remember. I was Young, and had to sneak to listen to it bc my mom didn't allow me to listen to rap. So I guess that would be a no to your question. 🤷😉

Mimi Robinson MC Lyte is one of my favorite. I don't remember her goin in on her but I remember that linr by KRS 1 with Boogie Down Productions. There were alot of Roxannes also. Roxanne's Doctor and several others. I gotta go thru KZread to see how many have been posted. I did hear Sparky D vs Roxanne on here the other day. UTFO started a wild ride back then. You couldn't even buy some of it in cassette. Your baby was probably trying to keep you from the cursing that they did. LOL

Tieuel Legacy Oh wow! Very informative. Thanks for that. Yea my son won't Havin it. Had to put it on some PBS for him. Lol. I'ma drop the link to that song I mentioned. My cousin use to go crazy over that song and play it over and over and over and over again. That's why I remember that. But a lot of ppl say it didn't go harder than Roxanne shante's big mama. Be that as it may, I just love old skool point blank period. Everyone was more lyrical without the silliness u hear today. I will get back 2ya soon. As I see it tho. Nice talking to you homie. ✌️🏿💝

This is great. I heard about it months ago but didn't realize that it is debuting next week. The hip hop heads from the 80's will know how big this is. I probably still have a song of hers from Kid's Jam 90.9 (Houston). Back when we only had 2 hours of rap per week and it all happened between about 10am and noon on Saturdays. Looking forward to seeing this. #legacy #film #photography

It contains a great performance for a first timer -- and as a biopic drama thought its conventional, its also vibrant and sincere.

Look people, I am very happy this has turned into a movie and that Roxanne Shante gets some spotlight....but for those who know and for those who do not know...lets not forget that before Roxanne there were many other female MCs that deserve equally much credit if not more...female rappers like ShaLaRock from the Funky 4 plus 1, Lisa Lee, The Sequence, Lady D, Lady B, Tanya Winley, Xanadu & Sweet Lady and many others...

We passed each other... in the city once...and there's something that "your voice" did and....at times may still do for me...nah, let me save this for when I review the movie. Rae Love Nope, Monique only opened the door for female comics, like Haddish & others; Jesse Jackson made it possible for Obama; Roxanne Shanté was the first female rapper, which made it possible for Lil Kim, Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, Foxy Brown, Nikki Minaj, & other female rappers.
