A lot of players didn’t in the 90s. You had 3 point specialist back then, especially in the mid to late 90s where they shot way more 3s than they did in late 80s…. And MJ became the mid range and fadeaway king. But it 3s kept getting bigger and bigger each decade and each year. The old school coaches didn’t like it if that’s not what you did. Then, by 2000s more and more 3 were shot. Kobe developed deep shoot and made it a big part of game because that was what the game was envoling into..

They shortened the 3-pt line in the 90s so yeah that's when his best shooting %s are. Sure if he practiced he could probably be a great shooter but he doesn't have the one motion shot form which is objectively the best shooting form for 3s. He'd have to drastically change his game.

I don't understand this mentality. Jordan was still playing at an elite level when he was 40. He was arguably in championship-caliber form until his late-30s (implication: he had another title or two in him when Krause-Reinsdorf decided to dismantle the dynasty in 98). It isn't surprising to me that he was wiping the floor with people at 34. He could still wipe the floor with people on any given night when he was 40 and playing with a supporting cast of corn-league Wizards players!

Question for vintage Jordan Fans: Did he had a bad stretch where he was playing under his casual elite level during that season? I've follow this 96-97 Jordan season and he perform like a master in a lot of games, with crazy exhibitions like this one. The team had a great record too. I get that theory of fans tired of giving him the MVP, and Malone had an solid year with the Jazz too, but to me, 1997 is when i've seen Jordan more muscular, strong and combining that with poise and extraordinary accuracy. Maybe, apart from being the best player in the league, he get 1998 MVP because everyone knew he was retiring after that year, but to me, he should have won '97 MVP as well. (And many thanks for keep improving the quality of the higlhights!)

As the other users said it was voting fatigue. MJ should've won every MVP from 88-98 (in full seasons he played) 87 I believe he should've won but one can make an argument his team was under .500. But still a 37 ppg avg and 200 steals and 100 blocks was and still is unheard of. Just to put things in perspective look at his credentials the years he did NOT win: 1986-87- Team record 40-42: Stats- 37.1 PPG 5.2 Rebs 4.6 Asts 200 Steals 100 Blocks (First in history, First and Only since Wilt to score 3,000 PTS in a season) 1988-89 Team record 47-35: Stats- 32.5 PPG 8 Rebs 8 Asts (Top 10 in scoring, steals, and assists) 1989-90 Team record 55-27: Stats- 33.6 PPG 6.9 Rebs 6.3 Asts (Led league in Scoring and Steals) 1992-93 Team record 57-25: Stats- 32.6 PPG 6.7 Rebs 5.5 Asts (Led league in Scoring and Steals) 1996-97 Team record 69-13: Stats- 29.6 PPG 5.9 Rebs 4.3 Asts (Led league in scoring and team to 2nd highest win total in NBA history at the time)

@@hpmlucci7553 1st of all your argument is dumb. Jordan closed out series which lead to less game 5's. In the finals MJ never went to a game 7. In the playoffs the Bulls often swept the opponents. Cant say that for Lebron and all the teams he has jumped on. And just to educate you son the year Labron joined the NBA they changed playoff series to 7 game series. Thats right when Jordan played there were only 5 game playoff series. So what does that say about total points??? Lebron barely passed MJ in total playoff points in a 14 year season playing 7 game playoff runs compared to MJ 5 game playoff runs during his career. Let that sink in. You cant win against this argument cause it really makes MJ far more superior in numbers considering 5 game playoff series.

jc jordan That’s how I know you’re a kid. It isn’t about how many points are scored. It’s about how many FIELD GOALS are attempted relative to the pace. Of course teams would score more now, since they’re taking 3’s instead of 18 foot midrange jumpers.

dpistons149 Yeah exactly, you couldn’t play zone. Hence why the lanes were WIDE OPEN for dunkers like Jordan and Wilkins. Nowadays you can flood the paint and close all driving lanes, making it much harder for iso scorers like Jordan to get his points. Jordan’s efficiency would take a nosedive if he played against zone defences and more athletic/disciplined defenders. MJ even admitted that his best defender was Joe Dumars of the Bad Boy Pistons. He couldn’t hold a candle to Andre Roberson or Iguodala or Kawhi as a defender
