Johnson may no longer have the world record, but to me he is by far the best ever over 400 meters. No one else even comes close. The way he dominated the third 100 of every race meant he could finish however he felt like running over the final 100.

The magnificently mercurial Michael Johnson strides into track history as one 1⃣ of the preeminent 400 runners of all time. Congratulations Mr Johnson.

Can be easy to forget or overlook that Athletes used to run 4 rounds which was difficult enough but esp when you had athletes like MJ who had the ability to double! Before it got reduced to 3 rounds @'11 Daegu WC, some forget that even Bolt in '08 & '09 had to run 4 rounds each in both the 100/200m before breaking those 4 WRs in those Finals which is something else that helps makes those records/performances even more special! In addition to the 3 4x4 Golds he won in '92, '93 & '95, MJ through no fault of his own was unlucky to lose out on another 4 in '96, '97, '99 & '00.

Let's be honest here.... MJ is the 400m GOAT. No, he don't have the WR anymore but as far as consistency goes.... he's the man. Plus, FOUR rounds??!!?? Lol I'm thinking if he had to just run 2 or 3 like they do now, that Extra energy puts him under 43. Seconds at this stage of his career. That's merely speculation I know, but it's my personal opinion. Also, I'm with his Dad in that he was a true 400m man all the way.... His 200m WR was incredible no doubt but just watching him run the 400m tells us that's HIS baby. Gracious dude.... especially appreciated how he handled and rooted on Bolt during Bolt's reign. No attitude towards his WR being broken, then smashed by Bolt, just admiration like all the rest of us. We can't say that about all former Legends can we..... ( cough cough, Carl Lewis.. cough ) 😏 I like Michael and he's been such a positive dude in this great sport. A true Legend who deserves to be mentioned in the GOAT convos for the 400m.👍👍

I will always remember Johnson for CHICKENING OUT in the 150m race against Donovan Bailey - when Bailey got an early lead from him and was pulling away Johnson FAKED AN INJURY once he realized he was never going to catch Bailey
