This song means so much to me. My parents used to sing this as a duet, my dad on lead and momma on high harmony! When they divorced, I was 16, and i knew I'd never hear it again. My mom now has lung cancer and can no longer sing but as we both are standing here listening to that song...her high harmony came back out!

Prayers for your mother Ms. Emilee.

In 1986, the woman that I had loved for many years dedicated this song to me. She was breaking up with me and I was devastated. Eventually, she returned to me and I was able to spend the last 8 months of her life with her. She finally agreed to become my wife, but we never got the chance before she died of staph infection at the age of 25, just 9 days before her birthday. All together, I knew her for 22 years out of almost 26 years. So I gave her wings and she returned to me, only to be lost forever. That was almost twenty-six years ago. I still miss her.

This song reminded of yrs prior when I had a conversation with my husband. He basically said these words as in early 80s I wanted to go to nursing. He'd rather have me at hm. I knew I had a dream and needed reassurance. He would help me achieve this dream. So many yrs later this came out. It's what my husband did hhe gave me wings and I took off flying with his and our daughters help. This song always reminds me of that journey we took together!❤❤❤

He didn't write it. Don Schlitz and Rhonda Kye Fleming wrote this song. It's not anyone's fault but it sucks how the real songwriters never get credited enough. Only in music this happens.

I sang this song in karaoke in London and shocked an entire audience. They had never heard it, and I made so many friends just knowing how to sing this song. I must credit Michael Johnson for his genuine, heartfelt songwriting, masterful guitar playing and fantastic baritone.

Great song and a great singer. Where did Nashville put them all. Not much greatness coming out of that town anymore.

It was the Billboard Hot Country Singles number-one single on January 10, 1987 and was also the Billboard Hot Country Songs number-one single of the YEAR in 1987. One "could" say it was not a huge hit for Michael Johnson if you were to only consider royalties. ALL PERFORMANCE copyright royalties for ALL radio airplay went to songwriters Rhonda Fleming, Don Schlitz and their publishers. He did make MECHANICAL royalties for sales of albums, but "Wings" only hit #27, highest of any of his releases

been to over 300 concerts but this man was the real deal just him his guitar we set and had a few drinks before the show not many times that happens he sounded just like he did on vinyle in person bob morgret

Pat Pattison brought me here to observe the excellent use of perspective and rhyme scheme in the lyrics, but I was taken in by the beautiful late-80s country-pop production. Great vocals and mix. Awesome writing for piano and guitar. I love the musical accents put on the lines of the chorus "ForGET... HOW to SING"... and how the first line "If you love me" is used to gather up the storm that's released on the followup (and title lyrics), "Give me wings." Song form is bone-stock pop song: Verse 1 - Prechorus 1 - Chorus - Verse 2 - Prechorus 2 - Chorus - Bridge - Chorus (with a fake-out cadence for one last partial repeat), and it works great. My only misgivings are about the weak-feeling drum beat - the rim tap not my first choice, I keep hoping for some solid snare hits. OK, there we go, final chorus they show up... nice :)
