It's really hard to portray to the new generation how big MJ was. He was as famous as the religious Prophet's. Difference was the prophets were famous posthumous and MJ was that famous ALIVE! Internet helps but it only shows a small fraction of his fame, he was monumentally famous. He was one of the few people that could travel with a different name on his passport. When he visited a country it literally shut down. Fans would wait hours to just get a glimpse of him. In every country he visited he received a Guard of Honour which is reserved only for very important people ie heads of state etc. If you look at any of his award shows he got a standing ovation. Celebrities were in awe of him. He owns the 1st and second biggest selling albums of all time. Growing up he was always in the papers that's why he affected every race, age in the entire world. Memories are a important thing, and when he died the world stopped. The internet crashed, mass grief on a worldwide scale. The news reported nothing but MJ for weeks and months. 3 billion watched his funeral cos he had been part of so many people's lives for so long that it hurt everyone deeply. Lastly he earned $4.2 billion dollars before internet.

I remember as a kid, our travelling group vehicle had a mechanical problem. Had to spend the night in a tiny town up in the Himalayans, in the middle of nowhere, everything around looked like it hadn't changed in centuries. We stayed at a local family home. Super simple, mountain humble people, with virtually no contact with current popular culture back then. In a wall they had two posters: Diego Maradona and Michael Jackson. It was 1986. I remember someone in our group asked about several other famous people, they didn't knew most of them, except for a few, like Bruce Lee, now that's popularity.

I was 18 when Michael died in 2009 and I still remember that day because all my coworkers were shocked and they were all different ethnicities. He touched a lot of people around the world. I had listened to a few songs of him when he was alive especially since GTA Vice city game had his music. When he died I just started listening to more and more and after almost listening to his work which includes the Jackson 5 as well I knew why he was really important. He was always in the papers. More than any other celeb, so you could argue that they should have more hysteria as they're even more exclusive? But no, MJs peers were releasing their own masterpieces and yet MJ out sold, his fans were bigger and the mania was bigger than the Beatles. This has been well documented also.

And I thought my life was just so hard and terrible after kids and two divorces boy was I wrong. As much as I love seeing his fans showering him with love, it's also kind of sad that he wasn't free to move. I mean, I can understand the fans, I'm one of them, I would probably run up to him, too, if I'd see him in person. But I can also understand Michael if he was scared being in that crowd and felt bad/uncomfortable with (so many) strangers being that close to him, like in his personal space.
