Was a little hesitant in certain areas of Gary roaming around by myself . Kept the rental car within close range at all times . Not the best place for tourists but was awesome to see all the MJ spots . Watch yesterday's video here kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmqMkq5mhai1hcY.html

It's a bummer this video of Michael Jackson's home town of Gary, Indiana elicited many negative comments regarding poor people, and where they live. This is poverty, folks. And a not-so-gentle reminder, this is also part of America. As always, thanks for the video Adam.

I am from Gary, Indiana and in the 60tys & 70tys Gary, Indiana was a beautiful place to live. Right behind the Jackson house was a historic black high school named, ROOSEVELT HIGH and home of the Panthers. The elementary school he went to was GARNETT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL located right off of 21st Avenue on the westside of Gary. I grew up 5 blocks from Jackson St. Mike lived on 2300 Jackson which was 5 blocks west of Broadway and I lived on 2300 Massachusetts St.one block east of Broadway. Gary, Indiana was a great place to grow up back then, But around 1990 Gary United States Steel mills started going down and the rest is history as they say. Currently they have begun to rebuild Gary, Indiana with new hospitals, new casino, possible Michael Jackson museum, Amazon just built a new factory there, So I believe the place is on it's way back and I am happy for the home town to be beautiful again. Much love everyone.

It was a well needed to see video. Believe it or not a lot off my friends and family don’t have the means to leave or want to. I love my city I was Js bless to make it out like Jackson’s. Once you make it out you don’t go back cause you already know you can get stuck there. This is so sad. I cry every time I go back home for a funeral. That’s the only time I go back and I don’t go to many of them no more. It gets very uncomfortable every time I go back. My daughter is 16 now and always ask if she can go to my home town with me. I tell her no it’s not safe. I have to put a vest on some times until I hook up with my brother or friend’s. It really comes alive after dark

When you stand out like a sore White thumb...you represent a soft target.....because folks know you don't belong there. Scary Gary??? Really? Reminds me of a big Irish college kid I had as a summer helper when my full time helper would go on vacation.....6'2" football player who would literally lock the door in between stops or when I went in to get paid. I would always tell him...if you're afraid stay home. He always seemed to regain that jock swagger once we got back to the suburbs west of Chicago.

FUN FACTS: In the same month of August 1958, the singer Madonna was born on August 16 and 13 days later just four and a half hours car drive away Michael Jackson was born. Michael and Madonna became the most successful male and female artists of the 1980s. Also, they went together as a date to the 1991 Academy (Oscars) Award. Madonna said they had kissed and he was shy at first. But, then got into it.

From someone that has lived near Gary my whole life it’s really sad how run down those historic places have gotten. Luckys definitely should be a museum. My gma worked with his dad Joe for many years, it’s always sad how those Jackson boys had to live growing up. It definitely worked out for them but they never were able to have a true childhood.

I’m originally from Indiana lived there til I was 19 years old and I’ve been through Gary quite a few times. And I lived in Kokomo for about 7 years and it’s like an hour and thirty minutes away from Fairmount Indiana where James Dean grew up. And he’s right Gary Indiana downtown is mainly empty and abandoned buildings. Just like the school that James Dean went to as a young boy is abandoned. But my favorite place to visit is the James dean museum is an amazing to visit and in Indianapolis another is the Madam Walker Legacy Center which used to be Madam CJ Walkers headquarters until her passing in May 25, 1919( aged 51) due to kidney failure and complications of hypertension.

Thank you so much for making this vid, at almost the cost of your life. I see you wasted no time getting out of there. Its sad to see the town pretty much abandoned but at least they keep the King of Pop's family home looking nice. Considering where they all live now and the beautiful homes and so forth they have its nice to see the humble beginnings where it all started. If it had not been for the father they would've probably still be in humble status but a lot happier and a lot less miserable. MJ would probably still be here with us. But then we would have never gotten to know these guys nor their talents. I visited Motown years ago, the house used in the beginning, when I visited relatives. It was very humbling to say the least.

I must say, i really enjoyed this video. It is so humbling to see what basic accommodations housed such a talented family. They came from virtually nothing and likely would have amounted to nothing has their father not been the father he was. He had many faults, but without him, those kids wouldn’t have been the family they turned out to be.

I just went there today (I live about ten minutes from there), and it seems that whoever maintains the property has painted over all of the names and replaced all of the bricks that were written on. They put up two big poster boards for people to write on instead of the property, but people just scribbled over other people's names and then resorted to again writing on the fence and bricks. It seems all of the writing is from recently so I think they just painted over it again. It must be a pain fixing it back up because people are taking knives and carving stuff into the fence. If you drive past the back of the property, people stuck their arms through the fence and scribbled on the back of the shed(?) behind the home. Also, that tribute statue at the front corner is still missing. I read they were supposed to put it back up last summer, but for some reason they never did.

Great video. Fascinating to see these locations. I remember watching Thriller on MTV and trying to soak up every moment because if I recall correctly it was rarely shown after the premiere airing. Now I can watch it anytime here on KZread.
