Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson‘s Battle for Solo Success | the detail.

Ойын-сауық

Now Jermaine Jackson had decided to separate himself from his brothers' group, it was time for him to finally take centre stage. Although an independent stardom took a while to develop for Jermaine and he spent years developing his talents before he found any tangible success.
Evidently, he started to feel disenfranchised by the Motown machine, and looked at new ways to launch his career in a big way. This resulted in a change in record companies, a new record and a high-profile reunion with his brothers that was set to be the opportunity of a lifetime.

In Jermain's defense, nobody saw Michael Jackson coming. He took the world by storm in a way that had never been done before. Michael's extra hard work paid off. He totally took advantage of every opportunity he had. That's why Michael Jackson became the greatest entertainer of all time.

The most interesting aspect of the Motown 25 reunion was that Michael sang Billie Jean. That is not a Motown song. It was Michael Jackson’s way of rubbing it into Berry Gordy’s face, in effect saying “See what we have done after we left Motown?” Berry Gordy wouldn’t let them produce their own music while at Motown and their relationship with that label ended in a bitter lawsuit. Michael agreed to do the reunion if he could perform his own non-Motown song. Now THAT was badass!

There’s a lot to be said of why Jermaine didn’t blow up like Michael and Janet…less drive, womanizing, loyalty to Motown, envy etc but I believe the single biggest piece missing was a producer that could focus and expand his talents. He was missing his Quincy Jones/Jam Lewis. Nobody can say where MJ and JJ legacy would be today had they not had great producers at precise times in their lives but I guarantee not as large

The biggest issue with Jermaine's early solo endeavors was that he was limited by Motown and Barry Gordy specifically. He's still a great singer, but he should have gotten the chance to grow as an artist. MJ and the rest of the Jacksons grew, and their music is much more memorable as a result. And we all know how "Off the Wall" and "Thriller" did chart wise. Great video from the detail. Long live the king of pop. 🎉

Yes. Berry Gordy was so focused on one person that he missed out. Jermaine and Michael were the most popular members when came to fan reaction. Plus there's Randy waiting in the wings. Three possible lead singers. He should have explored that possibility. The Temptations have had four different members sing lead. They were multi dimensional in that aspect. The J5 were basically one dimensional with Michael handling the majority lead vocals and all the single hits .

Jermaine's biggest weakness was his ultra ego and self absorbing persona. His version of saying he felt his brothers left him for Epic Records is utter rubbish because his own wife advised him to follow his brother's, but he was obsessed to be a mega solo artist. He underestimated his father in law, Berry Gordy, who had no desire to make him great, but to control him. By the time he left Motown, he had missed out on so many of the Jacksons string of hits from their Destiny and Triumph albums. Jermaine had the wrong production team around him after his brothers transformed with the music times of the 70's to disco funk.

Jermaine should have left Motown when his brothers left. Motown was unable to adapt with the changing times and seemed to be stuck in its golden era of the 1960s. When Jermaine finally accepted the fact Motown was holding him back and decided to leave it was too late for him to gain a foothold in a market Michael had already put a flag in. However, I think Jermaine could have broken through if he had managed his solo career better, built his own image, instead of falling into the trap of copying Michael which did nothing but label him as a discount clone.

Jermaine's had multiple top 40 pop hits and R&B number 1s while introducing the world to Whitney Houston. He's an ok bassist. His vocal range was limited, but he could have done so much more with better producers and challenging his vocal range. Listen to Brothers Johnson and tell me Jermaine couldn't have sung "I'll Be Good To You" & "Strawberry Letter 23" and sung them with ease if he added a little bit more soul to his style. He could not play the bass nowhere near as well as Luis Johnson but he could have tried a little harder, damn. He and the other brothers didn't really try to develop their individual sound and that's why that ship sailed long ago. Janet did well while Michael was doing his damn thing. They depended too heavily on Michael. If he wasn't trying to pull them up, he wouldn't have been doing those Pepsi commercials with them. Which was the beginning of the end for MJ. After Motown 25 they rode his fame until he cut them off. And because they depended on him, they were lost and dropped from their label after 2300 Jackson Street their last album. That Motown contract was horrible and they should have been financially set for life. Jackie is 70 and still touring and they sound horrible without MJ. Shame they can't do what Journey did without MJ fans losing their minds.

Although he did manage to gain some success it was never what he felt he was capable of. Basically he’s a more successful version of what happened to La Toya and later Randy.

Jermaine's intention was never to compete with Michael. He had family ties, married with hazel Gordy, that forced him to stay in Motown when the Jacksons signed with Epic Records, and the best way to keep singing was pursuing a solo career. I think "Do what you do" and the duet with Pia Zadora are the pinnacle of his solo career.

One of the main reasons why Jermaine did not thrive like Michael Jackson apart from envy was because he tried to be another mj instead of being himself.Even till date, he still sings mj songs, dresses like mj and a lot of people noticed these things. What worked for someone else might not work for you. Janet was successful too because she focused on her own talents instead of copying mj. That is just the difference.

Yes, you’re absolutely right! Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5 carried Motown Records during the 70s while Berry Gordy was busy making a movie star out of Diana Ross and trying to establish Motown in Hollywood as a film company in addition to being a record company. This is partly why the artists on the label, including The Jackson 5, started having dwindling sales due to lack of focus and attention. Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder were the only two acts on the label that had continued success throughout the 70s and that’s because they wrote and produced their own music which is what inspired the Jacksons to do the same.

Jermaine's talent was quite limited and as a part of the group he added something to the mix, but as a solo act he couldn't really walk the walk. Without his Michael's success he would quickly be forgotten. And it made no sense that he got to release so many solo albums when most of them flopped big time.

If I were alive from the time of the start of The Jackson 5 first entered the music world and was able to listen to Michael grow up through the years from his songs Along with his brothers, I would have been able to tell anyone after hearing the songs: Michael’s 1973 solo ‘Call on Me and The Jacksons 1976 Let Me Show You The Way To Go’ that Michael Jackson was going to most likely become the biggest breakthrough singer in the world and change the course of music forever. For me, those were the only songs I could hear Michael’s subliminal vocal tone with superb diction, colossal control, and projection. It was a stupendous falsetto sound I fear the human race may never come to hear again.

There was no battle. Jermaine is talented and he had his share of hits. Its his fault that he didn't punch through with more solo efforts. Its not even reasonable to call Michael 'competition'. There was none. Since they were very young and just starting out it was clear to all that Michael was the cornerstone of the Jackson 5. When you're touched by God that way there's just no question about it. After Off The Wall there could have been no doubt that MJ had outgrown the group. Thriller moved MJ into a whole other league. He had no competition at all. His 'BAD' follow up was also mega mega but got no love from the media or the award shows. I love them all, but the Dangerous album is the most special to me. It has my favorite song 'Will you Be There'. That song is STILL my favorite because it resonates on many levels...especially spiritually. There's just nothing else at all that compares in any way to it, and it's why, in my mind, MJ stands out forever as uniquely the best.
