Michael Hutchence - Interview VH-1 to 1 1994

Музыка

Paul King interviews Michael on VH1. I had to cut a lot of music out of this one to stop the whole audio being disabled but still a great rare interview.

I've grown to really appreciate his stage presence. I just never liked him in that way. I must be crazy. Poor Michael, gone far too soon from this world.

I’ve seen a video where he is in an elevator and an older guy needs to get off and asks what he does... apparently there were a few girls in the elevator around him beaming over him. He told him he was a singer. The guy asked him his name and he told him Michael Hutchence. The girls told the gentlemen he was INXS. The guy looked at Michael and said “you must be good with the way these girls are looking at you” (something like that). He just laughed and shook the guys hand and thanked him for saying that .The guy said he was going to tell his daughter that he met him... Michael was SO humble.... Just super sweet, down to earth and respectful. You would never know he was a famous rock star with the way he spoke to the man. He was one of a kind. A treasure to us all.

Obviously I didn't know the man, but from the interviews, videos etc I've seen he seemed to have the wrong nature to be so famous. Despite his incredible presence, energy, talent and sexual attractiveness he comes across as being quite a gentle and almost naive soul. The 'fame game' seemed to come as a genuine shock to him. Maybe too sweet, too idealistic and without the hard shell that his level of fame necessitated him to have. Such a waste of a talented and apparently gentle intelligent soul. So sad.

Agreed. doesn't have any edge, any distrust but I get having to be careful not to offend. He started with this so young and did not have life experiences, so in a way he was a bit inexperienced and this would impact him when it came to dealing with what all happened in London with Paula. He had no confidant or persons to guide him. He answers all questions of interviewers, who also don't probe him I might add.

Decided to watch this again, guess I should have known better-- throat tight, tears in my eyes - still so sad Michael is gone. Got to meet him once at the Greek theater backstage, & I'm in the bleachers audience in the 'Everything' video. I became acquainted with Darryl their wardrobe stylist, talked on the phone over the next several months; I called him a few days after Michael passed, Darryl couldn't even come to the phone, his g.f. said he was so broken up and upset. Well, I don't think I'll ever get used to losing Michael. All along over the years it felt like he was a soul mate, or soul connection. A deep 'thank you' to all of you who still care, value, appreciate & love Michael. A big shout-out to the other 5 of Inxs also, they are very nice, real, down-to-earth great guys.

The one thing (no pun intended) that always stands out for me in this interview is his melon colored sweater. I remember thinking how great it looks on him and w/that scarf. Of course the hair and accent are always gorgeous. The one thing (no pun intended) I 've always liked about him is that he's one of few rock stars that can express himself very clearly. Even as a kid, that's what got my attention. He's definitely not an idiot and it's like he's always thinking and learning about something. I've always adored him and I still do. Love you Michael :)

Michael Hutchence was a fascinating man in my opinion. He was so deep and mysterious in certain ways. He seemed nice, down to earth and calm in this interview and that´s also how I view him in general. It´s so sad that he died and that he apparently took his own life. I understand how he could be depressed during his relationship with Paula Yates because of all the press and their negative stories about their relationship.

  • @Confidentk9sCa

    @Confidentk9sCa

    2 жыл бұрын

I doubt Paula Yates nor anyone made Michael Hutchence become seriously depressed for him to end his life. I’m guessing his brain injury was something that caused a lot of rage and a whirlwind of mood swings that made life in general a serious struggle for too long. When someone struggles so much like this, it often makes any difficult life situation too much to cope with. Life will always have its struggles that he likely would’ve handled better than most of us normally. However, the effects of his brain injury is likely what caused his inability to cope any longer. And the only one who truly knows anything about this is Michael. To speculate and blame others of something so serious is 100% unfair, wrong and brutal especially for his daughter who has to hear crap like this.

A great loss. He was so handsome and sexy, yet gentle and vulnerable. He had an idealic life growing up in Hong Kong with servants. Australia must have been a cultural shock and his parents divorcing must have had a huge impact on the three children. But he lived life to the full. Perhaps if he had stayed with Kylie, then things would have had a different outcome. So sad that he died so young. Hope he went to Heaven.

Honestly I feel as if they'd be holding true with the likes of ACDC, Queen, Ozzy, the Stones...ect. Michael had a voice that no one could recreate. One of the best and most unique vocals in music history. Sadly they're just a memory but atleast we have thier music and video.

I heard Garry say that they were not an influenced band but an influential band. They experimented with different sounds and rhythms that influenced other musicians and bands... I agree with you. I think music today would totally be different if that day never happened. I also think he would have much to say about what is happening in the world... he always had very strong opinions on global matters which reflected in his lyrics. Heck, Strangest Party would be a valid song right now in 2020 (along with many others).

I wish people would watch Mystify then give their views. This footage here was 2 years after he was punched and smashed his head on the pavement with blood coming out of his ears and mouth. He had a terrible time after it happened in 1992 and refused treatment and left the hospital, then spent months throwing up daily and being untreated. If he'd got the help at the time to deal with the traumatic brain injury then he would still be alive today !....he had 2 large areas on the brain which were badly damaged. Michael was excellent at interaction and a great communicator, very clever, so here this footage from 1994 he'd already had the injury 2 years and swore Helena to secrecy, not to tell a soul about it. There is footage of this actual interview which is hidden here where you can see how much he is actually losing it, they do not show it on this footage. It got worse and worse as the years went on and the overuse of antidepressants did him no favours at all. He needed proper help and intervention, which never happened. The scans show how bad the damage was, I've seen them. He loved Paula and Tiger but 1997 he really was showing signs of spiralling, the injury had taken over and he was even forgetting words in songs. Combine this with severe depression/alcohol ETC and the stress over Paula, Bob and the kids.. he just broke... couldn't take anymore. If you see the footage of him his last rehearsal day before his death, he looked dreadful, totally broken, the signs were there, but nobody stood up and helped him..not even his bandmates. The writing was on the wall. He would have panicked and been out of his mind in that hotel room, unable to think clearly.. so he hung himself. I imagine whilst in the event itself he thought what the hell am I doing, but it was too late, he got himself into a situation that he wasn't able to stop and that was it, he was dead....There will never be another MH... never... its impossible. He is my total icon... RIP Michael. You were the elite and still are !

You're very right on most of your comment. However, I've watched Mystify, along with hundreds of videos and interviews. Something I noticed about Michael. When he was happy in a relationship, he wore a ring on his left hand ring finger, signifying he was taken. I've not seen any videos or interviews where he has a ring on when he was clearly with Paula. I believe Michael loved his little girl Tiger Lily. If Paula had loved him as much as she says she did, why didn't she bring Tiger Lily to him in Australia, and return alone to the UK to fight it out with her ex? Michael was a very mentally messed up in individual. I've watched him admit to smoking pot, snorting cocaine, and having a large jar of ecstasy at all times. That was before his TBI. Heroin was never mentioned about Michael, until he caved into Paula Yates who'd been obsessing over him for 10 yrs. She had a history of heroin abuse. That's the last thing Michael needed. Truth is, Michael was attacked, yes. But by keeping the damage he knew about a secret, his band mates didn't understand the changes in Michael. That was on Michael. The band loved Michael as a person first. They would've done anything to help him...he was a Farris, as were Kirk and Gary. Its gotta be the saddest story in music history.

He was outstanding and humble, an I think in shock of the game they all manifested, I think it took them all by surprise , he was from humble beginnings and humble aspirations and then all of a sudden he became a boss, King pin that wanted to expand his band and himself but was not ready for the fame side of it, his best track in my standards was Mystify!!!!!

I just loved INXS. Michael was a great frontman however the rest of the band are very talented and gifted musicians. This interview speaks volumes on his personality and love of life. I still do not want to believe he killed himself. I miss him so so so much. Hutch was so sexually and sensually charged. It was natural and people likely were jealous of him. I may be wrong thinking that. May Tiger Lily be living a happy, healthy and balanced life. God bless Michael Hutchence.

+Maye McDonald I don't think he did. Not sure what exactly went down, but a man who is this kind and humble would've left a note. Especially with a baby and other loved ones. I echo your wishes for Tiger Lily. And for the Lord to bless him. God bless you too.

+Maye MaDonald, for whatever it's worth, my two cents are he would not kill himself. He was so against that kind of "act" (for lack of a better word). In fact, the day Kurt Corbain was found and they said it was suicide, Michael made some remarks at the beginning of the show, and not in a good way. Also, Bono has said he had spoken on that very subject with Michael and how they both had strong feelings about that type of death. Selfish (again lacking a better word) and Michael was many things but selfish was not one of them. Just my thoughts.

shaunaanne100 I'll always believe Paula's husband Bob was involved. Then Paula died 2 years later, then Bob & Paula's older daughter Peaches died. Wonder how much Peaches knew? It disgusted me that Bob ultimately ended up raising Tiger Lily; Michael's daughter. Then kept her away from Michael's family. I think it was his goal to steal Tiger Lily, and he got away with it. For all we know, he's probably a pervert. I get angry just thinking about it.
