I understand Ende's bitterness. During production, he was hired as a script advisor with Wolfgang Peterson to work on the adaptation of the book. However, the script was changed behind Ende's back and he got a copy of the new script just a few days before the film's premiere. He felt absolutely betrayed. In an article he said: “I saw the final script five days before the premiere and only as a result of a judicial verdict in Munich,” says Ende. “I was horrified. They had changed the whole sense of the story. Fantastica reappears with no creative force from Bastian. For me this was the essence of the book.”

This is one of the man who change the world with his storys. Not the world from all humans. But the world from some people, who carry this secret of his story for ever in there hearts. I wished i could meet this man one times - what´s impossible. But we can meet his soul and heart every time when we read one of his Books; I love his fantastic Storys - and it must be a wonderful human who can write so wonderfull and true storys.

wonderfull comment...thanks from Rome, Italy...for me is a honor that master Michael Ende lived for 14 years near here (Genzano) and i'm sorry that to him dont like the movie...there has impossibile in 1984 make the movie like the book, but of course, Michael has the him ideas...r.i.p. master :(

Acabo de ver la película y estoy completamente de acuerdo con él en TODO. La película dura como hora y media, y creo que incluso para una primera parte yo hubiera añadido algo más de metraje. Al fin y al cabo, estaban invirtiendo mucho dinero después del gran éxito del director con Das Boot. No obstante, quitando el hecho de que la peli rezuma encanto, tengo que decir que la escena del Pantano de la Tristeza está perfectamente dirigida por un Petersen en estado de gracia. ¡Eso sí es un pantano misterioso y peligroso! Pero después de eso es como que no saben cómo seguir. Donde más se nota es cuando Atreyu llega al Oráculo del sur, van y colocan las mismas esfinges que antes pero coloreándolas de azul, ¡y se quedan tan anchos! Y luego el fallo garrafal: al principio el comepiedras describe la nada tal como está en el libro, pero en el momento en que la presentan como una tormenta, la película, simplemente, falla. Pero claro, ¿cómo presentan la nada como conflicto en un medio audiovisual cuando se trata de un concepto tan complejo?

He could have saved his masterpiece from further butchering by producers whose imagination has succumbed to the Nothing! Der Film ist mit so viel Liebe zum Detail erschaffen worden. Der Elfenbeinturm, die Figuren, die Landschaften und Himmelsbilder. Ich finde, Michael Ende sollte sich nicht so schlecht über den Film reden. Sein Buch ist fantastisch, keine Frage, ein großer Erfolg. Das ist der Film von Wolfgang Petersen aber auch. So viel Liebe und Fantasie steckt ebenfalls in dem Film drin. Herrlich!

I love both the book and the movie. Every author must understand that a film never will become like they have imagined, and they also need to have in mind that everyone who reads a book, have their own vision in their minds….that's basically a part of the plot in The Neverending story. That being said, I can see he's being angry if they changed the script behind his back.

He said himself in a German talk show that in his opinon it is important to carry the essence of a book into the movie adaption. He acknowledges that for this exact purpose, changes have to be made, but in his opinion, the whole idea of the story (Bastian creating a new Phantasia from within himself) was completely screwed over.

It's just a bad move to destroy the whole logic of the plot by letting the dragon enter the outside world for fun after he spent the whole first part of the film travelling precisely because no being from his world can come to the outside world.

@ apparently it does not seem to me that he acknowledges that changes has to be made. Maybe I missed something but in every interview he seems to be only talking about details like this or that should not look like this and that etc. I have never realized that the sphinxs were not wearing a bra until he mentioned. The fact that he calls them strippers bc of this is quite surprising. There are thousands of statues of women or men portrayed naked from different eras and I have not thought once that we are looking at strippers on an art history class.

Cuando uno lee sus libros, no sólo los de ficción, sino sus pensamientos, reflexiones, acercamiento a cierto tipo de "filosofía " (sin categorías cerradas ni dogmatismo); nos podemos dar cuenta el por qué de esta repulsión hacia el filme. Hollywood falla en captar la esencia, lo más substancial de la obra: la poiesis, la necesidad creadora intrínseca en el ser humano. La película falla hasta en captar adecuadamente la anécdota. Es realmente un desatino. Y ODIO que Falkor no se llame Fujur y parezca un perro volador. >:(

Das Interview hätte er sich sparen können. Der Film ist total schön und auch gut gelungen. Schon allein, was da an Arbeit drin gesteckt haben muss ist Wahnsinn. 60 Millionen Mark hat der gekostet, das muss man sich mal vorstellen. Und an Fantasie hab ich da überhaupt nichts zu bemängeln. Wenn dem wirklich so wäre, dann würden nicht so viele Menschen gut über diesen Film sprechen.

he simply had to negotiate a better deal and contract. exactly like the writer of harry potter did, where she had complete say over the production, because she didnt want it to harm her franchise. its just a matter of business, and not trusting anyone with using your art. as someone who is 45 and just started reading the book, I must say there is not a whole lot of difference, in the vibe of the film, and as a child, I remember it as one of the most magical films I've ever seen. the music, the characters and the whole aspect of the visual effects was incredible. perhaps it was cheesy, but as a child it seems to be really really working. I think crumb didn't appriacate fritz the cat as well. but this-I think I know why. because it should have been an interpetation of fritz the cat. and this movie is about doing the same thing. I think they did a pretty good job. like dune. or the first lords of the rings. the animation film

I'm sure now you understand the differences between the film and the book now that you've (I assumed) finished it. For my part, I think that the point of the novel could never really be captured within a film. So much of the affect of the book relies on the experience of being a reader, of imagining and relating to the text in a way that isn't quite possible within the medium of film. Still, I understand why Ende was bothered by their choice re: the plot. If you only adapt the first half of the novel, the point of the story is entirely different. The whole point is that the second half of the book deconstructs the first half, and itself. It's a beautiful, affecting piece of literature and nothing would make me happier than to see it represented in visual media. But I'm not sure that this would be possible - the book is too cerebral to translate to effective action for a film. I don't think that folks would be entertained or even be able to grasp the philosophy the book delivers, because it does so in the language of literature rather than film.
