    i agree and though i did watch this when he did win it. and the cider house rules is a really really damn good movie. i like that he gave props to this other nominees as well. i think he was really shocked he won this too as he hadn't been won one it 14 years. Caine has done a LOT of really damn good movies and he's also done really shitty ones and ones that are so painful to watch you can tell it was for the money.

    Rafael França I disagree. I don’t think it makes a difference if the presenter says “the winner is” or “the Oscar goes to”. It means the same regardless of choice of words. At the 2018 Oscars when Jane Fonda announced Gary Oldman’s name, she said “And the winner is”. She could have easily said “And the Oscar goes to” and it wouldn’t have made a difference. The name that’s in the envelope is the winner regardless of how the presenter words it, because it means the same.

    There's a bigger scope to the moment than people realize: Michael Caine had won an Oscar in 1986 for "Hannah and Her Sisters," but he was filming the terrible film "Jaws 4" at the time, and the studio wouldn't give him a few days off to even attend the ceremony. I've always enjoyed Michael Caine's acting, even in the poorer films he made, but I could never understand how he won the Oscar that year and watching this clip almost 20 years on it's even more astounding to me. The other 4 nominees all provided great performances in now bonafide classic iconic roles. Cruise, Clarke-Duncan, Osmant and Law all would have been deserving that year.

    @simonhill1590

    Tear-jerking doesn't equate to great acting. I loved MCD in it too, but his lines were fairly monosyllabic and he didn't have to do much other than put on a big dopey face. For me Sam Rockwell as 'Wild Bill' is the (albeit brief) performance that stood out in that movie

    I think MDC was a great actor in general (RIP) and he was very good in Green Mile but that role didn't need much versatility unlike other contenders like Tom Cruise in Magnolia who showed rage,sadness,cynicism and so much more all Olin one performance. Still,both were superior to Michael Caine.

And, despite the fact that I really liked Michael Caine's acting in The Cider House Rules, and despite my belief that Hayley Joel Osment is the best child actor I have ever seen, I still think that Oscar should have taken Michael Clarke Duncan. His acting as John Coffey in The Green Mile was truly the best acting I have ever seen. It was simply unattainable!

The man always has a look of compassion and comes across as someone who truly wants the best for you doesn’t he? It reflects in his speech too. He wants the best for every other nominee too. What a gentleman and what a brilliant acceptance speech. “Do you have any idea as to how much we supporting actors get paid?” Brilliant!

    He's been a hard working actor for almost all his life. And he had to accept quite iffy roles just for the rent money up to his sixties. This was the start of the late part of his career, when people like Nolan took to him like a charm of good luck and hired him for small parts in all his movie. This was the start of the part of his career when he could accept roles just for the fun of it and not just because he had to. And that's why he shows so much class, because he earned it, and everyone in that room knows he earned it by hard work.
