Miata Coolant Tank Replacement

Ойын-сауық

I swap out the potentially defective Radiator Coolant tank for the aftermarket all aluminum Moroso tank, BUT not before I visually inspect the inside of it for welding debris. You might be suprised whats actually inside!

    Quality video, I wasn't convinced I needed an aluminum overflow tank since I never had one fail (non MX-5 vehicles). You were the first video to say why it fails, kudos to you

    Hi, thanks for watching and the comments. I am not sure about the other Mazdas (non MX-5 vehicles), but the problem with the MX-5 is that the plastic tank is under pressure just like the rest of the cooling system and is just not merely an overflow tank. On most cars the overflow tank is NOT under presure and there is no rick of them rupturing. I think you may have already but if not please consider Subscribing. I would really appreciate it. Either way thanks again.

    Your guide is the best one on KZread for this none of the others give such detailed explanations or show inside the tank. It's good to know the welds are solid inside and out. I followed along and installed a Moroso tank on my own NC today, thanks for making it easy.

    Now off to find an "over temperature alarm" solution... I may be able to sniff the voltage from the existing thermostat and feed that into a 5V ATTiny MCU with a buzzer alarm if it goes over threshold. I'll get the 5V from my touchscreen radio's USB port... I'll add this to the list of "how to improve a factory Miata", and send it to Mazda engineers along with "built in blind spot mirrors". Nothing worse than not having a "you're head gasket is about to blow / you are about to destroy your engine" alarm... So a literal hose rupture could cause a total engine loss.... awesome whip btw!

    Hi Ollie, Thanks for watching and replying! Thats a very poor design for a car that is otherwise mostly perfect. Mine failed at about 85,000km the first time I took it on track. I replaced it with one from eBay. Doesn't look as nice as yours and I'm sure it lacks baffles, but it has done the job. I think it was around $100USD. Oh, and don't trust those sight glasses! They stay full of fluid even if the level in the tank is lower!!! Mine does, anyway.

    “All you have is a temperature gauge, not a light.” Wouldn’t that make it easier to notice the rising temps??

  • @NINEPOINTFIVEPROJECTS

    @NINEPOINTFIVEPROJECTS

    10 ай бұрын

    Hi, no all it has is a temp gauge and no overheating light. If the tank ruptures it can overheat very quickly. If you don't look at the gauge every few seconds it can happen before you know it. At least a light would be something unusual on the dash to get your attention. Either way thanks for watching and your comments. @@NINEPOINTFIVEPROJECTS This reminds me that I need to get an Arduino or STM32, or digi-stamp board (or other microcontroller), and a voltage sensor to read the temperature probe's voltage. Then code; If temperature > 225 F , then alarm = on via a buzzer. Plus a 12v to 5v buck down converter to run the board whenever the car is on... Super nice whip, btw!

    I see so many people going right to a metal tank vs the oem plastic. The downside I see is not being able to see the coolant level in the tank vs the translucent oem plastic tank. For example I open the hood of the car at every fill up and look around for leaks, fluid levels and things out of place. With a metal can I wouldn’t be able to do this as the gas station with a hot engine. Any thoughts on that?

  • @NINEPOINTFIVEPROJECTS

    Hi, thanks for watching and the comments. The Moroso tank has a sight glass on the right side. It easy to see if you are low on coolant or not. I just check my level the other day when the engine was cold, first through the sight glass and then I removed the cap to make sure the level in the sight glass was consistent with what was actually in the tank and it was. Either way I think you may have already but if not please do me a favor and Subscribe to my channel. I would really appreciate that. Have a great day.

    Hi, thanks for watching and the comments. First I just looked and the Moroso tanks appear to have increased in price. Secondly, I'm not familiar with the 2015 model and if it has the same issue. If it does I would say that if you plan to keep the car for a long time, I'd go with the Moroso as a permanent fix. If you're not planning on keeping the car for a significant time, you might go with the OEM...just keep an eye on it. It makes me sad that Mazda went from an AGM battery in the trunk to a flooded battery in the engine bay.

    @@NINEPOINTFIVEPROJECTS One of the fundamental design goals of the original Miata was a perfect 50-50 weight balance. They decided that moving the battery to the opposite corner from the driver helped achieve that goal. As a consequence, AGM battery tech was chosen, because nobody wants battery acid in their trunk. AGM in automotive applications was rare at the time. The Panasonic battery they ended up choosing was legendary. The smallest battery I'd ever seen but it started the car reliably for a full 9 years and nary a speck of corrosion. And of course not having the battery up front freed up space in the engine bay, which to me is always a virtue. And the small size allowed it to occupy a niche in the trunk which really didn't interfere with cargo.

    replacing from oem to an unknown quality one do not worth it. Just buy the oem one when you can see that the mouth of the can starts cracking. It lasts for 15+ years

    Hi. Thanks for watching and the comments. I feel reasonably confident that the Moroso Aluminum tank is much better than the OEM plastic tank. From what I have read there is no guarentee on how long the plastic tank will hold. 15 years could equate to any number of miles on the car. Mine had 8400 after 15, but many I'm sure could have 184,000? Once you put the Moroso tank in, there is no need to worry about it ever again. Either way I appreciate your feedback. If you haven't done so already, please consider Subscribing. I really would appreciate it.
