Prior to kicking off the NFL season, Coach McDaniel found some time for us to sit with him and talk about life lessons, football and what's ahead. A man who had a dream from a young age and passion for football took his dream and parlayed it into a head coaching job in the National Football League and has created something special with his team in South Florida.
A Yale graduate, making him an unique candidate and person for being a head coach in the NFL but also makes him stand out and be someone who captivates people and his players with such a different coaching style and his young age also generates a lot of buzz but all factors that McDaniel said he embraces. The conversation and wisdom in his words is something players latch onto but also his academic analyzation of Xs and Os is something that makes Miami a team with an aggressive offense and team that problem solves to only get better each week.
With the Miami Dolphins projected to be one of the top teams in the AFC, McDaniel talks about how he welcomes the competition and says if you can't play against the best then what's the purpose in the long run. In a tough division with the Bills, Jets and Patriots, McDaniel says it's a title up for grabs and any team can win and focusing on the present and each day is a chance to be the best. Fascinated by his coaching style and relationship with players, the guys dive into what has shaped McDaniel and his coaching approach and what is the mindset into each day, each game and with different players.
Talking about life Pivots, McDaniel further expounds on his time away from the NFL because of his alcohol related issues and how losing something you love is painful but carrying that pain of the loss is something that motivates you everyday to be the best you and make the most of every opportunity. He also talks about becoming a father has been one of the most moving and powerful experiences that keeps him going each day and wanting to be the best him.

Being a serious "not serious" person is what makes Mike McDaniel such an inspiration. I don't know if that makes sense to everyone but, I am happy for the success this man is having because he is absolutely loving every step of the way and elevating others to be there too. It is an earned privilege to be able to do something that you love every day and feel the tremendous responsibility that comes with it when you are put in a leadership position. I hope one day I get a chance to meet him and just talk the shit, seriously and not, cause he is a rare breed in ANY field. It takes an incredible amount of will power and humility to understand yourself, therefore, being able to understand and empathize others to the level he can. Thank you Channing, Fred and Ryan for having him as a guest and creating the space for such amazing conversations to happen.

I love that this man is the Head Coach of my Dolphins! For those of you who never played football, Mike McDaniel is the total opposite of the typical coach you encounter as a player. I see why his players love him! He said, and I'm paraphrasing, "Just because you're in charge doesn't mean building relationships with your players should be weird." Most people are stuck on power, but in my opinion, the most powerful person in the room is the person who has it, but you'll never know it. Phins Up!!!

While I understand what you mean. Basically, there's more than 1 way to skin a cat. Mike played college ball & been around hard nose coaches. Mike Shanahan is old school. But, overall, it's kind of the natural evolution of where the game would have to go. Even at lower levels, players start asking "why" instead of the old style of "cause I said so" doesn't fly. Plus, every1 has access to more information & it's about knowing "why" to get better.

Mike has the supernatural ability to just shed skin and rebuild himself that comes from mastering addiction and having a messed up childhood. When he discovers that something about himself is prohibitive to him getting where he needs to be he just offboards it entirely. Creates new traits, new habits... These type of people are the absolute best to learn from, but they don't comprehend that most other people literally can't do it because you have to go through messed up stuff to develop it. When he said "coaching is easy" and then just summarised it the way he did "football players just want someone who can help them", it's like everyone else is thinking "yeah duh but what about the ridiculous play designs and playcalling etc. etc." but to Mike, the big realisations are the things that matter the most, the minutiae, the problem solving and detail work is just shit that he can figure out on the fly.

I was so deep into thought & enjoying the interview that when Channing said that ish about him being so intense. It kinda shook me out of a trance. Lol. You can see part of why he's a players coach off his personality, especially when he lets you see both the analytic & looseness of it. But, it's all talk without results & what he's shown in yr 1 & now 2 games into yr 2 is that he is 1 hellavu a coach, play designer & play caller. Add in the work ethic, which is what makes the best of the best....the best of the best. Like he said, he just doesn't look the part, but he sure af is nailing what it takes to play the role.

Freddy was that dude . One of my favorite RBs to watch play as kid. The vision , the quickness, and the acceleration once he saw an opening. Love running counters and stretch plays with him in Madden .

Late to the party. These gentlemen are authentic. Let the interviewee talk and speak their mind. All three of these vets think slow and talk smart. A great interview with great men talking ball. Keep grinding men. Your content is great and lets people see inside the mind. Much love fam ❤❤❤

It's because he actually thinks before he speaks. It's processing your thoughts before speaking to answer questions that are being asked. Sounds like he's stoned to you, it's just because he is an intelligent person.

So glad Mike McD is the dolphins coach!! After the likes of Flores (dictator), Gase (no clue), and Philbin (no personality) it’s refreshing to have a coach with no ego to say he’s not wrong, great personality, and is a great coach with football IQ! Great show guys!!

As a Patriots lifelong fan born in 85 I got to see the hay day. Mac Jones is not that dude. Sorry not sorry. Mike McDaniel is the man. His story is amazing. My favorite coach because of his honesty and his struggle. As a recovering addict I can relate to his story

You can't dislike this guy, regardless of who you root for, and the guy is special. One of the great football minds in the league. Please stay with us until retirement Mike!
