The native -American tribes used to build very light structures on the land. Then they broke it down and move because Florida is not the kind of land good to build permanent structures on. They keep it quiet, but they are constantly re-enforcing the various structures by planting more sand and dirt under the foundation. All over Florida, sinkholes form and have killed thousands of people over the years. This incident was a sign of corporate neglect.

The state of Florida is on ancient limestone that in some spots is softening due to rising water. In other areas limestone caves are collapsing underneath structures. But you are right that damage caused by digging foundation of adjacent buildings. Cracks were showing on this building's parking garage according to a engineer that had inspected it before. BTW there are some buildings here in Atlanta that have questionable construction.

They couldn't keep the water out the garage when it rained. Cars would get flooded out for years. They brought water pumps to pump the water out but they barely worked. The pillars got destroyed with salt water for decades and it Finally gave in

I live about a mile and a half south of the collapsed building. I’ll certainly be watching this investigation closely. I also wondered about the construction of 87th and Park, the new high rise that was built next door to Champlain’s South tower. During that construction, residents of Champlain had been complaining that their building was shaking. At any rate, I’m stunned and so saddened by this. I had just passed by there about 12 hours before it fell. It’s heartbreaking and horrible to think that there could be 150 people under that rubble just blocks away.

I also think issues and work on the roof added weight that became the last straw for the steel beam. It will be compelling to see what roof was being worked on. The loss of lives could have been avoided if the condo had acted sooner or Miami’s zoning was more strict.

Born and raised in South Florida, and it SHOCKS me that they have almost fully filled the coastline from Jupiter to Homestead (122 miles). They are building on limestone, not solid ground, and with climate change, rising seas, coastal flooding, and stronger storms and hurricanes, more of this is on the way. It's been well documented that the foundation of this building was sinking a few millimeters annually, and that the foundation and walls were cracking. Let a CAT 3 or stronger hurricane hit the FTL - MIA area, and see how many more buildings collapse.

Walter you should try drinking Cuban Coffee. It is really strong and people drink it in very small portions like shot glass. I had some of that Cuban Coffee when I visited Miami several years ago.

There are buildings on Galveston island built after the 1900 storm that are still standing. This is sad. Man, made there was a building newly built in New Orleans that collapsed a few years ago. That was a mess. There is a lady missing. Her son said she called him about loud cracking noise 3-4am the previous day.

Theres a city in Louisiana that has a slow sink hole that sucked the whole town up. Its a company mining there that caused it.

I agree with you Walter! I live about 30mins from there. One of the problems in florida is that these greedy people are over building everywhere and they don't care. There's no more land down here and there is constant problems with pipes bursting open all the time because everyone has to connect to the city. But florida only cares about money 💰and nothing else. There use to be special landmark buildings downtown..but no more...y'all think Atlanta is over crowed try living here. I am out of this in about another year.

FYI about a week or two ago the U S Navy was bragging about they had conducted a test on a Warship off the Eastern coast of Florida. The ship supposed to had taken and big explosion from some kind of under water sonor device to see if the ship could take the damages. The experiment was successful. It may be possible that the explosion could have affected the coast. In addition years ago when that Earth quake struck Haiti there were rumors that a North Korean Submarine was conducting under water experiments that caused the quake. But it was stranged that after the quake how China had a military humanitarian ship showed up first to give aid to Haiti. Just a little something something from the Bruh on the West side of the rail road tracks!!

There will be more. Our infrastructure has been "patched up" at best for the last 50-70 years. Bridges collapsing, dams failing, etc. We also have to account for rising tides and erosion in areas like Miami, etc. As we get storms and extreme weather, we gonna learn. More sinkholes too.

I was looking for your perspective on this. I'm happy to be spoiled with a builder's perspective. I agree and the facts you give make a lot of sense. I build software, not structures so I am no expert on this. What I'm extrapolating from what you are saying, is that other buildings around this area are going to be affected. The 'BEACHFRONT era is over and we could possibly be looking at a large-scale event happening in slow motion. The water tables underneath the city could displace the soil underneath, how many piers would have to fall in order to lose structural integrity? what kind of event could shift multiple concrete piers, millions of tons of concrete. Yall remember when the CDC caught fire here and the roof had a partial collapse? The whole concrete structure did not come down, so there is evidence to back up what you are saying about the worse-case roof collapse. I fear that within the coming years we could see multiple, even larger collapses. Rex Negron has an excellent point, this is a likely plausible scenario and if they find fill dirt ar the bottom, and no water erosion, it will be the tell of the tale.

Reminds me of the Sampoong Department Store collapse in South Korea, although this apartment most likely fell down because of the land itself. The department store was poorly built, and large items were constantly moved across the roof.

Sinkholes are primarily a North and Central Florida problem. South Florida is built on a thin strip of limestone between the ocean and the everglades. Limestone is porous basically like swiss cheese. Water seeps up from underground causing flooding and erodes the foundation of buildings.
