Start the bottom of the crosshatch pile with the large splits and use the kindling on top. The fire will burn too down and you won't have to open the door to put those large splits in

I’ve got a multi fuel burner that looks similar to that one but mine is made by portway. With a full insulated metal flue. It sounds silly to say but I’m very disappointed with how much heat it puts out, it’s 5 kw. And my room is 17x12. But with one half of a split log on it at a time the room becomes unbearable to sit in .I got told it was because I was putting too much wood on. If I put any less on there won’t be anything to burn. I don’t tend to use it now because of that. The wood I have is kiln dried hornbeam .I’m wondering if there is another type of wood that gives out less heat.?

It’s more the type and size of log you’re burning. Ash is a good wood to burn as it’s a slow burning wood. You may be burning soft wood? Also, you’ll find all modern stoves will not allow you to shut them down fully as it’s very polluting.

@@igniteharrogate It’s only half of a split log maybe 2 inches thick and about 10-11 inches long. I lay the log in the fire then kindling on top . You can only burn 1 log at a time and after a couple of hours the heat becomes unbearable in the room. My room is 17 ft by 11ft3. I never shut the lounge door. In my old house I had a Firefox 5 stove. That gave a comfortable heat. This new one is a portway luxima. I’m wondering if it’s meant for a bigger room
