MG4 XPower 2024 review: Hot hatch game levels up with bonkers new Audi RS3-rivalling electric car!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2024 MG4 XPower is aptly named. By all measures, it's a proper hot hatch. But on power alone, it jumps off the paper. Yep, this is an MG that delivers 320kW - and let's not forget its 600Nm of torque. We're talking Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG A45 S territory here, so you know it means business.
Of course, the MG4 series is becoming increasingly familiar in Australia, where it briefly held the title of most affordable all-electric vehicle (EV) until the BYD Dolphin stole its thunder by a single green note. Either way, the XPower has now arrived as the small hatchback's performance flagship.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Stephen Ottley gets behind the wheel of the MG4 XPower to find out just how well it stacks up against its petrol-powered competition. After all, the EV revolution has made it a lot easier for brands to produce quick cars, but is there more to it than that?

You're comparing this thing to much more expensive cars, it's just not a fair comparison. For what this car gives you for the price, there's nothing that compares.

I disagree with your initial assertion that to impress it needs to corner like a track animal. This is a daily driver and no one takes corners at speed on the school run or weekend jaunts.

In about a 30 min test drive, I longed to catch a red light and hose other traffic off just by the acceleration of the XPower without a lot of accelerator. This is on outer surburban 2 or 3 lane roads with light traffic, mid week. Enjoyed trying out the one pedal driving which almost seems to do away the need for the brakes. High gen has a pretty decent braking effect as well. Driving this sensibly is easy, it's not a car that eggs you on. I have no interest in going around a race track but do enjoy some of Victoria's country roads, Jamieson to Eildon, Wallan to Woodend, etc. Back roads. I think you could have a lot of fun with the XPower. The power available makes short work on any traffic. And what else is there close to this in price. Will be interested to see how the BYD Seals compare when they arrive. The XPower is a bit gloomy inside, dark like Holden Astra's used to be. A panoramic roof like in Skodas, many BYDs would be a good improvement to have. My current car is an ICE with sports suspension and a DCT gearbox, a lot of fun to drive. But of course performance wise you wouldn't see which way an XPower went.

Interesting in the servicing costs. I continually see EV fans saying that EVs cost nothing to service compared to ICEV.

They eat tyres and will develop expensive repairs as China has never been great at downsizing components to reduce weight and parasitic loss. The cost to insure them and possibly be banned from parking in certain areas will become an issue.

are you old, Why do you still compaire with a Flinstone car, this is the first light weight EV on the marked with a lot of power and fun.. so outdated hot hatch that cost 2 times more, is NOT even a need anymore. times change..

Mate it's a fooking crazily fast EV. And a relatively cheap one at that. It's not an ICE hot hatch, so why all the GR this and Type R that, bull? Your opinion on a comparison to other fast EVs might be useful, but people buying this might be interested in the 'lean, mean and green' side of this vehicle for half e-tron GT money. The EV6 GT, or even Model 3 performance, could be options, too, for a comparison. Anyway, I'm gonna trick the missus into buying one so I can have some stooopid thrills and I can buy a family car like an Ioniq 6 for longer jaunts. Fast and Furiously Cheap is all good for me. No rear armrest or lighting is more of an issue.
