MG Soft Nylon Guitar VST for Kontakt Player - Tuning Section

Музыка

In this video I go into the Tuning page in Soft Nylon Guitar, using real guitars to show how and why different string tunings might be used as a guitarist.
Here is the MIDI file for the main piece (remember the guitar should be set to 'Open Major' tuning) - www.dropbox.com/s/vqk0utzxfae...
MG Soft Nylon Guitar for Kontakt Player was released in March 2022 on Pianobook to great reviews. This classical/nylon guitar VST captures the warmth and intimacy of a small-bodied nylon guitar, with detailed scripting coded from the ground up by a guitarist (myself).
You can listen to demos and purchase the instrument via the Spitfire Audio website: www.spitfireaudio.com/mg-soft...
I will be releasing more instruments soon so please join my website newsletter for the latest updates - GuitaristComposer.co.uk
I am a composer for TV and video games, currently composing for The Plucky Squire, past work Assassin's Creed Odyssey (composing with duo The Flight), and my music is regularly aired on BBC, ITV, C4 and worldwide through production music labels Sony/EMI, Cavendish, Boost and Audio Network.

Beautiful guitar piece... and thank you for showing how this works in MG Soft Nylon. You have changed the way that guitar VSTs work and done so very well. Thanks again.

Oh, man - I can't tell you how straight forward (AND sympathic) I find your demo's . . now this new tuning video lesson is just so . . (lack of words) . . first we see the real man explaning & playing and the switch over to MG Soft Nylon for further demonstrations. Niice thinking ! As an in-depth interested person I already at the first shot (from your living-room) wondered what that mike was doing at that distance ? And after the second shot where you played a sequence (in dropD) I had hopes about "now maybe this guy is going to tell us a little more about, how the actual tranfer from playing the guitar to midi is going on . . but alas no. Well, we are some out here who would like to know more about this tecnique on this platform. Best regards

Thanks Torben. This video covers the tunings aspect - I will shortly be doing a video about getting realistic parts with (and without) the sustain pedal.

Just found this. It's a godsend...love the intimate recording. Maybe this a silly question but can this mimic the buzz or an accidentally muted note from not getting my fingers on the frets just right? Something like what's heard in Portishead's The Rip? It's not a big deal, just curious. :)

Ah thanks Joran glad you like. Sorry there are no buzzy note options, but nice idea and I'm putting that on my list of free instrument ideas for Pianobook, stay tuned cheers!

I'm enjoying playing around with different pieces. Do you plan on creating other tuning possibilities? For instance, the 6th string is sometimes tuned down to C. Also, the 2nd string is also tuned up to C.

Hi James, thanks for that and glad you're enjoying it. I will certainly add the tunings question to my list of considerations for future development. Cheers!

Hey Mike, could you tell me what is the moving vertical bar on the guitar fretboard onscreen (looks like a slim white capo that is constantly changing)? I think you referred that as neck position but what does that show exactly and how does it influence anything that is played back from the midi? Thank you :)

  • @ComposerMG

    @ComposerMG

    Жыл бұрын

Hi, each neck position (the vertical white line) changes the note-string relationships...as you probably know the same note sounds different on a different guitar string. In Auto and Free mode the instrument is deciding on the best / most realistic sounding neck position set by the highest and lowest MIDI notes inputted. In Manual mode you can set this yourself via keyswitches. Thanks for watching!

@@ComposerMG Thank you very much! I think the empty strings confused me a little bit (the are independent of this neck position.). But sometimes there is a note which is played lower than the theoretical neck position (for example the Bb note at 06:37, 23th measure, 4th beat). So if I understood correctly, the neck position is set manually there for the 4th fret, but the note is played on the 3rd fret. I may be wrong about it, sorry, just trying to get it right :)

@@zenharmonix No prob - when a note appears on the neck lower than the given position, it means a slur is being played..this is a graphic compromise as obviously it is impossible to slur onto a different string..some rules are broken when necessary!

Mike - I bought this VST and absolutely love it. There are a couple of questions related to open notes that I can't figure out, so am posting this in hopes you can point me in the right direction. 1) Often, when I play a G chord using the traditional structure (3rd fret low E, 2nd fret A string, open ... , 3rd fret on high E) I like to do a variation; specifically, I like to hold a B note on the 3rd string (4th fret) while allowing the second string to ring open. I can't figure out how to do that on this instrument. 2) A second fingering position on the same basic chord structure, I like to hold a D note on the second string (3rd fret) and allow the high E string to ring open. Can you provide some guidance? Thanks much. Bruce

Hi Bruce, Thanks and really glad you like it! OK for 1) you would need to manually set the neck position to higher than 1st position (using the red keyswitches on the left) so it would choose the fretted B note rather than the open string, then switch back to 1st position after - my video on Manual Mode explains the red switches. For 2) that would work fine by default I believe.
