I had one many years ago. It was one of the sweetest birds I had. He never bit me and loved to dance.

They really must make wonderful pets. I stopped in at a pet store after losing my best flighted friend and found an amazon there...the first I'd ever seen in person. Speaking a little parrot, I realized quickly he wanted a friend, but I also learned he was terrified of hands/fingers. "Step up?" "SQUAKKKK!" but I could tell he wanted a friend. Eventually he realized I was respecting his boundaries and I found where he wanted me was as close to his face as I could get mine, just no hands and lots of whispering lol. By this time, I'd learned almost nobody in the shop could handle him, so when I reevaluated our trust level after he started preening himself with "step up?" I had to quickly pull my arm back this time cuz that sucker was ready to hang out! Its probably for the best I pulled my arm away, I eventually learned he was a rescue and he had a thing with hands. Sure he might have wanted to hang, but he might now have wanted to come down either! Apparently only the owner can "handle" him and there were only a few girls in the shop that he was willing to perch on even to go to bed. They said they just really hadn't had much time to work with him, but if i could earn his trust that fast and have him eating treats out of my hand before he went to bed, I wonder what a hand reared, never abused Amazon might be like! But hey if you have it in your heart and skillset to rescue one... do it!

My grandma has a bird that we saved from an abusive family, how does a person begin to get a bird to trust again? Do these ones have a special food they like or something that would make him happy to see me?

There is some question whether they are a native, vagrant, or translocated population. It is certain they are not introduced or feral. Population movements are probably occurring due to loss of native range as well. However they got there, enjoy their presence

First piece of advice will be to take it to a veterinarian that knows exotic birds. I'm not sure where you live, so some things may be more challenging. First feeding in the morning should be vegetables, no onions, garlic, or avocados as they are toxic. Give about 1/4 cup of pellets in the morning and again in the evening. I prefer to use Zupreem Natural as it doesn't have any unnecessary dyes. I wouldn't be surprised if the vet recommends Harrison's pellets. I don't recommend them because they are one of the hardest foods to transfer a bird onto, which tells me they don't like the taste. Interact with them on their terms. I wouldn't recommend letting it on your shoulder. Amazons have very clear body language, but until you learn it and how to respond to it, you could wind up with a painful bite. Let me know if I can be of further help

George Reymann mom and I have a Mexican Redhead Amazon Parrot to. His name is Perky. He is 3 years old now. He's a sweetheart in every way because he's a people bird. He talks up a storm and sings out of nowhere. He would sometimes flies over towards mom and I for loves. He loves people to. Plus he gives mom and I joy. Mom and I also have a female yellow nape Amazon Parrot named Zorba. And a double yellow head named Sundance. All three of them get along very will to. Sundance shows off for Zorba and Perky by doing his courtship dance. When he does it he makes a similar honking sound like a goose. Zorba and Sundance talks up a storm to. Perky lets mom and I pet his head, stomach, feet, and back. He also squawks for loves to. In fact he does it first thing in the morning when I wake after I come downstairs for loves right away. Sometimes when perky really wants loves he would fly over to mom and I.

Where is your store located? I have a Mexican red head and had him for almost 30 years. I’m a little worried bc he is overweight, what should he be eating.

We had to close the store in 2017. He should be eating a pelleted diet with fresh veggies. Fresh fruit, nuts, and seeds should only be a once in a while treat. Get him moving, flying or flapping his wings. Check his weight regularly

Please, tell me how better to hold as a pet, one or one pair of blue fronted amazon? I have a boy (near 4 years old ) and recent i got an 8 months old girl for him. In the last few weeks, he's become aggressive towards me. Will it be permanent or shortly? What am I supposed to do to keep him on my side? Thanks! I am very anxious and nervous about his attitude and I would like to know if he will return to me as he was before or not. What should I do? I am a poor old man who has in this world only a parrot and a few dollars a day, the vets ask me many hundreds of dollars for a little advice. Please can someone help me with a free advice. Thank you !

How can you tell males and females apart? My father was gifted one and we aren't sure if it's a girl or boy.

The only definite way to tell is either DNA sexing or Surgical sexing. There does seem to be some slight difference physically, but is not 100% accurate. Looking at the red color on the head, in females it generally does not extend behind the eye. An experienced breeder can have good odds of visually guessing the gender by appearance, but to be certain the first 2 methods are recommended. I do suggest that all parrot owners know the gender of their birds: if you know the gender, you know what problems to focus on or ignore in case of a medical issue
