Mexican Gothic Review

Ойын-сауық

If you hate mushrooms like I do, get away from this book lol.
This was unfortunately the only book I got around to reading this month and I must say I wish I read something else. Great writing style from the author, I just hated the story.

I laughed so hard because I felt the exact same way! Starting with the father sending his young daughter to deal with a potential hostage situation - who does that. Then she barely got to interact with her cousin and she kept drinking whatever they gave her - I kept thinking "girl don't drink that!" And the spores - just nasty. I was so disappointed in this book - especially given all the hype. Thank you for this honest review.

A few notes on the issue. Noemi is a socialite with good standing in society, and her father is described as a gruff man, who would be quick to jump to conclusions than to have open negotiations with the family, which is one of the reasons, the others are her cousin and going to a masters program while being a woman in the 1950's. Noemi is also an anthropologist in training, which includes being taught to overlook the various opinions of the other groups, even if racial or unethical opinions are expressed. How far were willing to go with it can vary, and it shows by noemi her tolerance had its limits. I openingly think this book cpuld be characterized more as a thriller than horror, since the secret is meant to invoke old gothic stories that also had the issue of having the slow start, but ultimately ending with a bang.

I just finished this book last night! Love this review. My biggest issue was that Noemi didn’t ask for real help ASAP and kept acting like nothing was wrong

I personally really liked the book, even though it was a bit of a slow burn, but you have raised a lot of good points and some issues I've also had. I will also agree that it's not much of a horror, but it is incrediblyyy gross and I caught myself legitimately wanting to gag quite a few times.

I feel like its kinda unreasonable to not expect a horror story to be at least somewhat stomach churning. I had no problem with it. I mean the whole Mushroom plot is basically Children of the Corn meets The Last of Us, or any kind of zombie spore type narrative. I thought it was good. I was more unsettled by the rape elements than the gore, I thought that was scarier. On some Kilgrave type shit. I heard it was gonna get a series, so I would be interested to see what they made of it and how a mainstream audience reacts. If I were to make an ask of an adaptation, it would be to give Catalina more to do and more characterisation, and pick up the pacing slightly.

I just finished reading it and came to find other people who felt it was slow and not scary. I guess because of the hype and it being marketed as this really creepy book, I imagined I would be scared the whole way through. I agree with you. The writing is spectacular, but the story, as a horror story at that, was just okay. I was let down and getting through the book was a bit of an effort.

I was midway through this book and DNF because it was a bit too slow for me and kinda repetitive yet I thought I was being dramatic and came on here to see others perspectives. Glad to know I’m not the only one,and I enjoyed your video and definitely subscribed!

I mostly liked this book but did notice a lot of the problems you mentioned. There were some good ideas, but it ended up being more gross than actually frightening.

A friend just sent me your video bc I basically said the same things after reading it. Not to take away from the author’s talent at all, especially after hearing her interviews. But this was not the book for me. Great review!!

I just finished this book and i was so disappointed. I really liked the first 200 pages. Slow burn, atmospheric, mystirious like a good gothic novel should be and i also liked the characters and the writing. But the last 100 pages when the mystery is revealed are so convoluted and ridiculous. The last 30 are sloppy like a cheap horror movie. And this novel won the British Fantasy Award and the Locus!! Either it was a slow year in horror or those awards where given for political reasons more than quality.

Do you know anyone in particular who’s Mexican and has a toxic family? The descriptions you share so beautifully make me feel like there’s more symbolism in the toxicity of the culture in regards to Staying even when there’s so much wrong 🥲
