Great video, thanks! Growing up in SoCal (West Covina) in the 70s and 80s I remember picking up our Amtrak tickets a few times at the Pomona Depot there! Back then the Santa Fe Line was the high iron, and Amtrak's Southwest Chief stopped there and used that line. The San Bernardino Line with Metrolink was a secondary Southern Pacific Branch, a former Pacific Electric Line, the lines statuses have simply been reversed ;) The BNSF Pasadena Sub is of course still very much in use to Irwindale.

I rode Metrolink on 5/27/2011 from Los Angeles Union Station to the San Fernando/Sylmar Station after I had arrived in Los Angeles on the Sunset Limited that I rode on from Loser a City Tucson, my best brother in law picked me up at the San Fernando/Sylmar Metrolink Station, it was much easier for him to pick me up there as compared to picking me up at LAX, Bob Hope Burbank airports. The Metrolink train arrived 5 minutes early, it was the Palmdale bound Metrolink train.

Lets all take a moment of silence and seep in deep into the nostalgia of this

Nostalgia hits HARD!!

This is cool I’m going to ride metrolink next year

the metrolink at 8:06 was so cool good job

My niece takes Metrolink to & from work, she drives to the San Fernando/Sylmar station which is only a short 10 minute drive from her home, she boards Metrolink when she arrives, rides to the Downtown Burbank station, gets off & walks 5 minutes to her work, saves wear & tear on her car, gas & doesn't have to deal with the 2 construction zones on the Golden State Freeway & rush hour traffic at all. I have another niece who works at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center as an intern doctor, she drives to the Stanton, DE DART/SEPTA commuter train station & ride the DART/SEPTA commuter train to the University of Pennsylvania SEPTA station in Philadelphia, gets off & walks to work, a 5 minute walk. Rush hour traffic in Philadelphia is 4 times worse than Los Angeles, there you sit in traffic for 25 to 30 minutes before you move up to 3 feet maximum.

I like the bell on the Bombardier bi-level cab cars they are so cute

The Gold Line Foothill Extension is being built from Arcadia to Azusa as we speak, and will use former BNSF ROW from Arcadia to Irwindale, and parallel the BNSF Pasadena Sub the rest of the way to Claremont and Montclair.

Oh, for those that don't know, the Southwest Chief runs on the BNSF San Bernardino Sub, they switched to it (then Santa Fe's 3rd District) in in 1994 when the Santa Fe closed the Pasadena Line to through freight and sold the ROW from L.A. through Pasadena to Arcadia to the SCRRA.

I like the new cars they have on the train. Caltrain & Amtrak should make one of those new cars too.

3:46 and 3:52 are sick

They did a study back in the 80s to see what light configuration would catch drivers attention. The triangle set up, Top mounted light or nose mounted light and 2 ditch lights make the Triangle. UP BNSF and a few other railroads ditch lights do not flash. Amtrak NS, CSX and others do. The flashing gets drivers attention faster then just straight on lights. Does this explain it better for you?

Dude i miss california!!!!! The commuter trains are usually not as frequent or long as the ones in the chicago area or northeast but they are nice. However the LOSSAN/Orange County Line/Surfliner route through Orange County is like the sunbelt/SoCal version of the Northeast Corridor

SCAX 800 used to be owned by Amtrak and was AMTK 396. 396 was rebuilt (F40PHR) in 1999 before being sold to Metrolink

+Snuffy's Cat Productions 35 of the generation 1 bombardier cab cars were converted to bicycle cars. All of the 2nd gen bombardier cars were sold to CalTrain and Metrolink and the 3rd gen is still in service. But hopefully soon, all the bombardiers will be gone.

I dated A girl FROM the Los Angeles area who's DAD ( initials are F.E.) worked For Metro Link, she (initials are or were @ the time H.L.E.) also worked for some signal Co. that contracted with METRO LINK for repairing and installing signals along metro link tracks. she also went to work for the FRA for a time up in Wa.. Ran into her last year some time crossing the metro tracks @ Marquardt Ave & Rosecrans crossing in Santa Fe Springs Ca.

It’s only activated when trains go through on the other side that’s why. The track where that train was, they don’t activate just for the other track.

Two engines for 4 cars and a power car on the end,! Here in Canada we have 1 4000 HP engines pulling as many as 10 bi level cars at speed. with a power car on the end. Your system must cost a fortune to operate

Actually, I think they were transporting a engine if I had my guess, IDK about Metrolink's rule but on Amtrak, they allow 1 engine to pull a max of 7 cars

Here in SoCal, Metrolink hauls trains 4-6 cars long with only one engine (two engines if one breaks down) but the sad thing is Metrolink only maintenances their locomotives when they break down. GO Transit (the Canada train you mentioned) transports 200,000 people a day with about 1,000 people on each train and their engines are maintenanced very well. However Metrolink transports 40,000 people a day with poorly maintenanced locomotives and only operates in the Southern California area. GO Transit operates across populated cities
