I for sure want mercury steam to make any future 2D Metroid games, this game is proof in my eyes that they should and then retro can deal with 3D because we know how well prime has been received

  • @DuoStuff

    @DuoStuff

I agree on that. I want to see what Mercury Steam can do with an original 2D Metroid honestly. I mean some of Samus Returns's problems were because it was still fundamentally Metroid 2, so I want to see how things go if they have complete creative freedom. And yes, Retro should keep handling Prime. Though I hope Nintendo lets another studio make more Donkey Kong Country games then, as I also want that series to keep going on.

IMO Metroid is a series best taken in small doses. When the market is saturated in Metroid games as it was in the 00s the franchise doesn't feel as special and people take it for granted. When they are spaced farther apart it makes them feel like special events. It sucks Metroid Prime 4 is going through dev hell, the wait from Returns wasn't supposed to be this long. If it turns out good though it will feel spectacular. If it's bad... get ready for an even longer hiatus. As far as Samus Returns goes, it was a little bittersweet to me. AM2R was so awesome that it had taken the Metroid 2 spot for me. This one felt... I dunno, overproduced maybe? It's good don't get me wrong, but AM2R felt so much more like what I would have personally expected out of a M2 remake. Samus Returns is so different it is really it's own thing. A good thing though! At first I thought it would have been much better if it weren't a remake but a whole new game, but looking at it from an official release perspective I see that it holds a good spot in the lineup as AM2R is unofficial and not on most people's radar so they need a modern take on M2. I'm happy we got it. Edit: good videos dude, thanks for the content.

I first played Super Metroid back in high school in roughly 2013, and always meant to play the rest but just never had the time. Then Terminalmontage released his Something about Super Metroid video and I finally played Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super again and Fusion. Each time I finished a game I would watch your video covering the respective ones. Your series is an absolute joy and it really made me appreciate the Metroid franchise even more, it's given me an even greater appreciation of the Metroid series beyond just being really fun games.

I got into Metroid two years ago thanks to the original Metroid II, so it's cool that its remake was what got you interested in the series as well! When I first played Metroid II, the repetition of the Metroid battles and the linearity of the map were exactly what I needed to get a grip on the game and not get lost! After watching your review, I wonder if the lack of enemy variety (which I'm still a bit iffy about) and the constant use of the melee counter (which I really like!) were intentionally made for new players for similar reasons. If so, some of the ways Samus Returns is set up make a lot more sense! Anyway, I thought Samus Returns was a fantastic remake! The Diggernaut and Ridley fights were some of my favorite additions! Great review, dude!

That's actually rather interesting that you started with Metroid 2. While I liked it a decent amount, a lot of people I talk to said it was too archaic. (I don't really agree.) Wow this series has been so satisfying to watch. And all those feelings you were talking about with Metroid fans at the beginning? You hit the nail on the head. Still upset Nintendo doesn't know how to make shoulder buttons so I've never been able to beat the game. What I have I've loved, and damn that Ridley fight makes me want to go out and buy a new 3DS so I can play through it! I'd love to see you do these for the other games, maybe around Prime 4's release. Whatever the case, this has been an awesome series and I'm so glad to see this series getting the respect it deserves with such well done critiques. Also, at least I was 1/3 of the way there with guessing the next series. Super excited for it, I should probably finish Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario in anticipation. While Samus Returns isn't my absolute favorite of the 2D games (I like Fusion and Zero Mission more) it's still really cool. As far as the other games go, I fully intend to finish it up at some point, maybe even next year. My plan is to cover all the 3D games next time I get around to this series, with Prime 1-3, Hunters (which no one talks about for some reason), Other M, and Federation Force. If any other 2D or 3D games release in that time I'll also cover them. Glad you're excited about the Mario RPG Series. I've been really excited about covering all of them, especially certain ones. And considering one of those important ones is Super Paper Mario, it definitely wouldn't be a bad idea to play it. ;)

I feel like MercurySteam gave hope to Nintendo, not just when they made a remake of Metroid 2, but also because MercurySteam revived Metroid Dread; which is now a highly anticipated game by many Metroid fans and other people that play metroidvanias. The Metroid franchise got a lot of fans when Metroid Dread was announced which hopefully will bring more light to this franchise as well as Nintendo putting more money and focus on Metroid games instead of just ignoring the franchise for years as is has been before.

Hey, just finished up marathoning your entire Metroid series over my morning jog! Before I get into Samus Returns, gotta say you did very well on all the videos, and I found it funny that your views coincide with a lot of mine on the Metroid series at large. (The story of Prime and Fusion, the games that got me into it in the first place, being my big draw) As for this game, a lot of people prefer AM2R, and I get why, but this game packs a whole lot of stuff in it that ticks a lot of my personal boxes that AM2R unfortunately doesn't even remotely do for me, not the least of which is one that I think separates Metroid from its fellows in the game industry. That of course being Metroid's sheer, wild ambition with each new entry. Each game in the series throws caution to the wind in what it wants to achieve with each entry, never wanting to be the exact same as the last. Metroid Fusion easily could've been just another Super like most would expect, but instead turned the expectations on its head to make Super Metroid's very specter one of its themes. AM2R, for as good as it is in so many ways (I have minor nitpicks I'll probably bring up when you get there), very much feels like Zero Mission But Metroid 2, and that leaves it with something of a lack of identity of its own in some respects. Samus Returns meanwhile stands out for its complete lack of fear in challenging its own series conventions in places, trying new things in the design, when it very easily could've played it safe, and given the series hiatus, might have been the logical choice for most. But Mercury Steam and Sakamoto (who produced this game and thus basically oversaw every aspect of their design and implementation, contrary to what many may assume) didn't play it safe and made my third favorite game of 2017 easily right behind Breath of the Wild and Sonic Mania. What I find best about the game beyond anything else though is what it does with the incentive of 100% completion. While the others games largely just gave you a different ending pose/art as your reward, which is fine, Samus Returns takes advantage of Metroid 2's segmented areas by putting a full completion bonus with each one giving you a piece of art detailing the backstory of the Chozo on SR388, creating the Metroids to combat the X Parasites, and the Metroids' mutation into something they could no longer control (due to the very energy of the new Aeion powers which drew them there in the first place no less!) And the reward for 100% completion, well.... That actually ties somewhat into Metroid's future, which is a little cryptic given Sakamoto's relative radio silence by and large as a game designer. However, in 2018, a full year after Samus Returns, Sakamoto did an interview with a Spanish video game website (which you can read some translated highlights on this Resetera thread www.resetera.com/threads/interview-with-yoshio-sakamoto-regarding-metroid-samus-returns.56925/) in which he detailed some thoughts on the game's development, including being unable to make a new game after Other M due to the team splitting off to other projects, working with Mercury Steam, and others. The line that intrigues me most though is the tease about Samus Returns' 100% completion reward, the final image teasing about what could be coming next. They have their eye on what comes next for Metroid, and to me that reads like a when, not if, proposition. Similarly from what I hear Metroid Samus Returns sold well within expectations for it, so I don't think we have anything to fear about Metroid going dark like before. And when that day comes, I look forward to seeing you cover it!

I personally am not a fan of the melee counter. It doesn't hurt the game too much, but there is a significant lack of variety in enemy attack patterns and I think the melee counter is to blame. At least 80% of them just charge you and the most effective way to deal with them is to counter, likely by design. You can shoot them from afar if you want, but I'm pretty sure enemies take more damage after being countered. Not to mention some enemies have extra defenses in place that you circumvent by stunning them with the counter.

I wasn't expecting this video to come out this year anymore, but it came at the right time, I was looking for something to watch anyway :) Again great job with the video. You described the status of the Metroid series perfectly, so people who weren't involved can grasp how important this game was. Also good to finally hear positive things about the Ridley inclusion. I also mostly hear/read that it was unnecessary and only fanservice and so on. As for the fact that it comes out of nowhere: That's the point, he wasn't in the original game so why would they ruin the surprise by putting him into the story throughout the game? I would love another game where he is there throughout the game but for this one, this way was the best. Btw they kept him a pretty good secret, they didn't even make an amiibo of Ridley (luckily we got one for Smash now). Sadly I was spoiled before I got to him, by those anoying YT videos, that show "every boss" and stuff like that, he was right there on the thumbnail. I hate when those videos get recommended because you can't really do anything, you can't prepare, you just see the thumbnail and that's it. They really should either stop or at least have a non spoiler thumbnail for a couple of weeks or a months or so... So I knew about Ridley, but I didn't know anything about the fight and it was a blast. The remixes of his songs aren't my favourites, but otherwise it truly is the best 2D Ridley fight imo. Though there isn't much competition because the other 2D games are sprite based and that doesn't suit Ridley too well. And I hate how he has a female and human sounding voice in the GBA games. What is up with that? lol I think I prefer his 3D fights overall, though the one in Prime 1 can drag. Imo he had overall the coolest scenes and fights in Prime 3. I don't like his Other M design and the fight is anoying too. In Smash Ultimate, they nailed his design though. It seems to mostly be based on his Super Metroid design but I think he has some elements from Other M too. He has a fun moveset, so I'm happy with his first playable version :D Anyway, back to Samus returns lol. One more thing about Ridley: I like how now both remakes added a bonus Ridley fight to the end of the game, where there was none in the original. Mecha Ridley is different, but it is some kind of a Ridley. I'm not sure if Samus returns is the savior of the franchise because it came out on a dying console, and I heard the sales weren't too good. What did they expect? They really should give the series one more try on the Switch for sure. That Super Metroid remake would be probably a win if they don't mess it up somehow. But if we don't count success, I love Samus returns. It did so much well and Metroid 2 was the last Metroid game that really needed a remake anyway. It's awesome how they designed all the backgrounds too, I mean in the original there was just a blackness, but the remake is so creative with the designs. Especially that giant monster that is sometimes there and drinks water. A lets player even thought that it would become a boss at some point :D Some of the Metroid fights can get tedious and anoying, like you said and it would've been great if they could've made additional in-between stages or something, that was a great idea that you suggested. I'm glad they updated the game musicly too. That Magmoor caverns song fits nicely in the lava rooms. Funnily they say in Smash ultimate that this song is from Samus returns, although it was already there in like 2 other games lol As I said in a comment on the previos video it is also cool how they added a scene at the end, where an X shows up. Something they didn't plan for in the original, but can be connected back to fusion now. I really hope they expand on other games too like this, if we don't get actual newer games instead. It makes the series more cohesive. Btw too bad that Samus returns is the only 2D Metroid game that could take advantage of the 2 screens. I don't get why they didn't do this remake on the DS already, then we would've gotten a remake on every handheld after the first. It was nice to not have to pause the game just to look at the map and sadly even if we get games on the Switch, this feature won't return. :( I'm glad you plan on doing the 3D games too. It might even be better if you tke a break, because maybe the rumors about the Prime HD Remake are true and then it could come out at any time. And I guess that would be the most optimal way to do a retrospective on. Anyway, I'm happy about the announcement you made for the new project. I haven't played/finished all of those games, but it will be interesting to go through the Mario RPG-s. I'm especially curious about Super Paper Mario because that is the first and only Paper Mario game I own and some people hate it, others love it. I mostly love it but it does have major flaws that's sure.

First: yeah it took a bit of effort, but I managed to just barely get it out before the year ended. Second: Yeah I always thought the complaints about Ridley's inclusion were a little dumb. And even regardless of that the fight is so cool that I really couldn't care less about the complaints. It really sucks that you got spoiled like that, and I understand your pain. I also got Mario Odyssey's ending spoiled by a video popping up in my recommended, and it ruined the surprise of a really cool moment. It honestly just sucks when it happens. Third: yeah it really sucks that it was released so late in the 3DS's lifecycle. I really hope that Nintendo gives it another chance, because the circumstances it was put in weren't exactly fair. Fourth: That background enemy was really neat and I'm actually surprised it didn't come back honestly. Fifth: I'm glad someone agrees with my whole extra forms idea, because I haven't really even heard anyone suggest it. They kind of just complain about the repetitious fights and move on. Sixth:That Red Soil remix as well was absolutely gorgeous. I actually got really excited while replaying the game when I heard that, because I had forgotten it was in Samus Returns. Seventh: I'm glad you're looking forward to Super Paper Mario, as that game in specific is why I really wanted to do this marathon. (Well that and Sticker Star, but that one is for... Different reasons...) I'm really hoping it turns out well.

Oh my God, somebody finally says it: Samus Returns Ridley fight is the best one in the series. Also, honestly a lot of the other boss fights are near the top for me, too. This game has like a near perfect difficulty balance, where the combat feels a lot tougher this time around but you still slowly get better at it. Finally taking down the Diggernaut after a lot of fails was super satisfying the first time around, and I love how its lurking in the background all the time. Also, unrelated, but did you try using the 3d in this game? I know most people dislike the 3ds's 3d, but I will say that this game has probably some of the best 3d on the system, the backgrounds look fantastic with it on. Anyway, I got through all of your Metroid videos and they were really cool, thanks for making them!

Let someone from the era clear something up for you. I grew up with these games. What was meant by "Metroid is Dead" was that the original metroid was not ever going to have an 8-bit sequel the original fanboy wanted. With nothing improved or added just continued storyline and additional exploration without any type of leading hand affect. After that many releases the hope was dead for that possibility. It is sad just how much is lost in translation over the years.

Great review and great series. I have enjoyed all the videos on this. I will say though, Everyone that reviews this game makes it sound like there are a lot of metroids that run away from you that you have to go find mid fight. I have played through the whole series again in the past month to get ready for Dread. There are 4 that run from you. 4 out 49 total metroids. I'm not sure why this always gets so blown out of proportion. Maybe it's the fact that all 4 of them are in the same area? I understand why people don't like these 4 fights, but I think Mercury Steam were trying to portray desperately hunting these creatures for the safety of the galaxy. They don't want to die and like real animals they run for their lives. Samus has to take chase so that none of these dangerous creatures escape from her alive. She has to be 100% sure they are all dead. I kind of like that form of story telling even though it seems to be lost on so many people.

But as a big Metroid fan that started with the original NES game, I hope we get more 2D Metroid games that play closer to Fusion and Zero Mission... not Samus Returns. I didn't really like the changes they made to the 2D formula. The counter attack seems downright silly at times, as Samus has never been a physical melee powerhouse, plus it is so overused in the game. It gets tedious to have to stop, wait, and counter literally every enemy you encounter until late game when you have more firepower.

  • @DuoStuff

Well actually, I'd argue that's just because they literally couldn't have had the foresight while making Super Metroid to know what was going to happen in Prime. Sure, it seems a bit weird for hit to go from Meta, to Proteus, to regular Ridley, but I prefer it this way over Prime being non-canon for arbitrary reasons. If they ever remake Super Metroid, I imagine they're going to add some explanation for what happened with Ridley, or just straight up make him Proteus Ridley again. As for your issue with Samus leaving the hatchling unprotected, firstly, I'd argue it was dumb to leave it unattended even prior to now. But beyond that, Samus probably assumed that... Y'know, Ridley was dead, so it wouldn't be a problem. You got me on the twice-over thing, but honestly, you could easily say that the fight with Ridley was a lot less life-threatening than the Mother Brain fight (which legit had her basically dead) or the X infestation (which straight up would've killed her.)

And I did enjoy the new ideas and mechanics they were trying out well. AM2R in too many ways felt a bit too loose, especially in its Metroid battles It felt like you were spending too much time trying to constantly land really difficult shots on time weak spots where Samus Returns held your hand a little more. Providing a better and more satisfying flow to the combat. Both remakes are definitely worth playing it was honestly just such a tone-deaf decision from Nintendo to shot down a project that would have given their own game a lot of hype and free PR. Samus Returns was a great game for sure but it wasn't on the level of Metroid Prime or Super Metroid. To be fair, those games were revolutionary and solid 10/10 games. I would rate Samus Returns as a 9/10 as it loses points for a lack of enemy variety and upgrades didn't require much exploration to find enough to be close to as powerful as you would with the most possible at that point. Compare that to Super Metroid where Ridley was almost a pushover with 40+ super missiles but was tough as nails if you didn't have many. A small amount of extra aeion and energy isn't going to make a noticeable difference against Ridley in Samus Returns.

It explains why he knew of the baby metroid and it makes sense he'd go on a rampage after getting beaten by samus, taunting her and trying to make her explode with the station as revenge And i mean, it never seemed like he had to heal any injuries, from metroid to super he's jusy fine with no noticeable damage and he clearly recovered way before that as he planned the return to zebes and the capture of the baby Metroid

I am hoping that Super Metroid gets the Metroid: Samus Returns treatment visually. I love the art direction and feel that it would be a perfect fit for Super Metroid.
