    Unreal Engine fan versions are always a nice thought experiment, but I find it that they tend to look far too realistic and lose the touch of art direction that makes the original games stand out. A good example as to what I mean are the explosive plants at 1:45. Both in the GCN/Wii originals and the Remastered, the light surrounding them is subtle, drawing your attention without demanding it, while the UE4 version is too aggressive, making the tree surrounding it much darker essentially demanding you pay attention to that sac. This kind of aggressive lighting can (and probably should) be used as environmental clues to force the player to interact or pay attention to something integral to the gameplay mechanics as an invisible tutorial. While those sacs do play a part in combat, they are very limited in usefulness since they are only found in the starting area, and are not even necessary for the narrative or understanding of the plot, thus such aggressive highlight is unnecessary. Another issue to point out is the arm canon's reflective surface. In the official releases, the arm canon feels rather dull in its textures without much flair, while the UE4 version is full of scratches and reflective surfaces. The UE4 looks more impressive, but from a gameplay standpoint it is very distracting. Highlights and reflections tend to draw your attention to what is being highlighted, but the canon is the one thing that SHOULDN'T be doing so. Your focus should be on the environmental clues and enemies in front of you, not on the canon that you're using to shoot at them. When it comes to gaming, art direction trumps realism, especially when realism doesn't serve a gameplay purpose. UE4 versions are nice thought experiments, and definitely look GORGEOUS, but art direction isn't just about making your game stand out visually, it's also about serving the gameplay.

    The arm cannon being so shiny and scratched up also contradicts with the lore of Samus's suit, excessively realistic elements like that make it look like a man made object, forged from steel or something, when in reality it's a construct of sorts that Samus can materialize and dematerialize at will, why would it have scratches if it's regularly taken apart and put back together at the molecular level? Why would it look like man made metal if it was created by an advanced alien race with access to technology and materials we could only dream of?

  • @TwilightWolf032

    @TwilightWolf032

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Cri_Jackal I hadn't even thought about that, but that's true. The Ancient Chozo Power Suit is somehow embedded to Samus' very own being, and probably repairs any damage it sustains by itself, like her ship does in Echoes and Corruption, both ships being made from Chozo technology. The suit is so embedded to Samus, when she became infected with the X-Parasite, the GF had to remove the suit surgically to be able to make it vulnerable enough to inject the vaccine inside her body. Plus, the X-Parasites could multiply the number of suits because of how it's embedded in the user's body, it becomes part of the wearer. Metroid uses a lot of visual story telling, the scratches on the arm canon tell a different story from the actual lore. Good job catching on to that.

    The "drama dial" is turned way up in the UE4 version. Way higher contrast, saturation, and sense of scale (there seems to be some wide angle lens distortion, which is really cool). Plus higher fidelity lighting and reflection from the rain. Might be a bit too dark, imo. But that's an easy fix. Bring the shadows up a bit and you're good. Obviously the UE4 version looks way better. But is it as visually intelligible? Would need to play it.

    So I won't say the Switch version looks as realistic as the fan version - it simply doesn't (although I kind'a prefer it's softer almost clay-like quality to the heavily saturated UE version). What I WILL say, is that several times when the video switched to a side by side, it took me half a second to figure out which was which. And that says something. The fact that the switch can run a game that looks this good, at a rock solid 60FPS, is simply witchcraft. Retro is a dev team of wizards, that's the only explanation.

    one thing I noticed is that the half pipe in the unreal version is missing the patterns that should be present in chozo architecture. It instead opted for a more cracked and damaged ground which you would expect for ruins. However this push for realism meant the worldbuilding and unique identity was lost along the way. Unreal also has much harsher shadows.

    The Switch remaster is awesome... for a Switch game. Because, even though it's a newly released game (a remaster!) it's impossible not to realize how ironically it already looks old (I mean in visual terms). The game has no reflexes, has no specular light, several polygons do not have soft edges in places where it should be, some enemies just fade away after dead, and the list goes on... I mean, it's nice to play this new version on the go, and they made a amazing job for a portable game. But at the moment that you start to play in your TV, it's clear how old this game already is. Of course, this version is better than nothing, but I can't stop imagining how amazing it would be to play this game, full of blasters, beams and lasers if it had ray tracing. Maybe 15 years from now...

    I've always enjoyed seeing old Nintendo games getting Unreal Engine upscales just for the fun of it, but this really demonstrates why I don't think they would actually make good games. Along with why I believe that despite the "more realistic" graphics, they are actually less realistic than the normal art style (of this game, at least.) 3:42 is a good place to pause and see what I mean by this. In the Unreal Engine, the mushroom complete sticks out. It's clearly distinguished from its surroundings to the point that you would have to be blind to not see it while looking around the area. In Metroid Prime Remaster, the mushrooms stick out if you're giving full attention, but if you're looking around, they could be easily missed due to the fact they somewhat blend in with the surroundings. Which, ironically, is actually more realistic than the quote on quote "hyper realistic" graphics of Unreal. When you're outside in nature, there are things constantly not being seen even though they're right in front of your eyes. Even a mushroom that big in real life would probably be missed by most people because of the way it would sort of just fit into the environment. Not everything in life looks super clear and sticks out to you. Sometimes, you have to be paying really close attention to even spot something. Which is why i've always preferred the regular "less realistic" graphics of games compared to these UE upscales, even if I enjoy seeing the results just to see them.

I think when you make textures with such high lvl of shaperning mixed to the stylized look of the beam canon, we get a weird visual incoherence. I think the unreal project is a really cool project testing graphic boundaries and visual fidelity but lack art direction to really tie everything together. Sometimes a lower ress texture , simplification and exaggeration on specific elements game leverage the whole visual identity. A hard part of visual design is to step back and make decisions on what to include and what to cut to everything ties together in a better way

    So the Unreal Engine version was done years earlier, before Nintendo even thought about remastering their own games. And this still impresses me, how good the UE version looks in comparison. The Unreal Engine is now used for so many franchises, it should be obvious why.

    There are mainly just some visual effects UE4 is producing that are superior to the Switch remaster keep in mind an UE4 game ported to Switch can still look and preform better on more powerful hardware. I’m pretty sure Retro Studios already has an updated version of their engine in beta that they’ll use for all their Switch 2 releases

    Retro Studios use their own excellent in house R.U.D.E Engine. It's on par with Naughty Dog, Rockstar game engines. Unreal Engine 5 is good but it's very complicated and currently hard to get the best out of it for 3rd party developers.

    Looks like there’s a couple of pros and cons to the remastered: I feel it prioritizes performance and stylization rather than over the top graphics. As he mentioned, the UE4 version suffered a little bit on performance. I feel the remastered took a set of tools and found a manageable way to enhance what was previously there.

    I think the UE4 version has better grass but I don’t think it’s an accurate representation of the original game like the remaster is.

    It does look pretty darn good. If the switch was more powerful, the game would likely use Unreal Engine 4, that would've been just AWESOME but powerful hardware is just not part of Nintendo's business model, it never has since the Wii.

    While i like unreal engine remake / hyperrealism style mods for games, this one really drives home how much incessant visual clutter they really have. Imagine actually playing the unreal engine version on the switch screen itself, with it being tablet sized, you just can't *see* anything.

  • @sinofsanity6593
    @sinofsanity6593 Жыл бұрын

    anyone doing an Unreal type rework are making samus' metal armour really shiny, I can understand why nintendo/retro don't wanna do that. I'm trying to remember which dragon ball game it was but it gave every character "shiny" accents in the artstyle and it just made everyone look plastic, it was overdone and it's possible samus could look like that. the remaster only really gives the amour any shine when there's more of a light source the Unreal version seems to have better overall lighting but the official one has the added realism of all those effects on the visor

    Very interesting comparison, ultimately the UE4 version looks imo rather much better, but you'd expect that with basically no processing power limits vs the poor baby little Switch which really has busted out a technical marvel, no question if that remaster were done on even PS4 equivalent hardware it'd look stunning. However you note the details in the remaster version which goes to show how much CPU based nit picking detail they put into the Switch remaster, where as the UE4 demo is purely and only a graphically focused build..

    The UE4 version is a cool concept and project, but it’s waaaayy too busy for a game like this to work. Metroid Prime has hidden stuff all over and while its visuals are nice, it never feels overdone or crowded. The UE4 version is too detailed to point out any key places etc.

  • @DadSensei
    @DadSensei Жыл бұрын

    The original MP had more detail and while I do like the remaster I think they should work a bit more on certain effects such as enemy debris, explosions and fire which mostly look as if they were gifs stamped on it, just to make them seem more natural to the rest of the game. With that being said, I think all Retro is doing is raising the bar to themselves, the original MP was on itself quite the achievement, reproducing 2D games in 3D properly and successfully is something companies are rarely able to do and the fact that a remaster is able to keep up only means people will be expecting about the same or better quality for future MP games. Given how rich MP2's art direction was, I don't think they'll have it easier, on the contrary they'll have to do their best and beyond. I can't but hope the best for the team behind this project and future Metroid games, because Metroid at this point represents quality over quantity

    rude (retro universal design engine). É incrível o próprio Jack Matthews, ex retro Studios, e engenheiro chefe responsável pela confecção deste motor, disse que até hoje está engine, possui um poder de script incrível. Imaginem o Metroid Prime 4, sendo feito em uma versão atualizada deste motor.
