Metroid Prime Remastered is a MASTERPIECE... | Review

I have owned Metroid Prime for many years and just when I was settling in to finally complete it, rumors swirled of a trilogy remaster. Like many, I waited and waited... and waited. Finally, Nintendo has delivered the goods with a remaster of the first Metroid Prime game. Marking my first time completing it, this game is one of the greats, and for good reason. The gameplay, exploration, atmosphere, and soundtrack all work together effortlessly to create an unforgettable and unique experience.

Just wanted to say for the exploration part, a lot of those pathways end up being dead ends if you don’t have the correct upgrades so you kind of always end up circling back to where you need to go anyway, and if it really is taking a long time for you to find out where to go eventually an update will come to Samus informing her of where she needs to go next, it’s not like a trail you follow but it does indicate where you’re trying to get to and usually from there it’s kind of obvious what path you should take

Personally, I would leave the hint system off unless you're really REALLY lost. Part of the charm of Metroid Prime is exploring the areas at your own pace, cause even if you do hit a temporary dead end, it stills fills you with a sense of curiosity about what's beyond that point once you DO get the upgrade to progress there, but the hint system kind of detracts from that sense of organic exploration and discovery.

This game truly is a masterpiece. It was my first Metroid experience and my first first-person game. I played it back when I was eleven or twelve. I struggled so hard acclimating to the first-person view back then. I pushed through and learned though. I played this game countless times as a kid. I played it so much that I started to memorize the game and where the items were. I eventually beat it for the sixth time and got enough completion percentage to get the special ending where Samus takes off her helmet. Up to this point, I had no clue what kind of character I was. I was just some nameless guy in a spacesuit. When I finally realized I had been playing as a woman the entire time, I remember audibly yelling "I am a GIRL!? THAT'S AWESOME!" From that point, the game became a cherished memory and personal journey of mine and fundamentally made me who I am as a gamer. I consistently gravitate towards badass female heroines in games and Samus is the GOAT to me. When the Trilogy released on Wii in 2009, I made it a point to play through the series once a year for fun and to try best my own speedrunning record. As of today, my fastest 100% speedrun for Prime is 4 hours and 37 minutes. I eventually stopped doing the annual speedruns in 2017. Life got in the way and I had to focus on other things. Then at Christmas time of 2017, I got a PS4, so my console focus shifted from Switch to PS4. I eventually shelved my Wii and never touched it again. Fast forward to 2020. I got a PS5 and focused on that a ton. My Switch was gathering dust. I was holding out hope that one day the Trilogy would come to Switch so I could play it again. Lo and behold, it has arrived! I never thought a Switch game could look as good as this one does. It is practically a remake. While it isn't the complete trilogy, I am so glad that I can play this masterpiece again and that so many others can experience it for the first time. Here's to hoping Retro Studios releases remasters/remakes of Prime 2 and 3 for the Switch. I can imagine they will to prepare everyone for Prime 4. Seeing what they did with Prime's remaster/remake, I know Prime 4 is in the best hands.

This game's lore was way too complex for little me to understand at the time, but I absolutely loved the sci-fi action and I have replayed it many many times over the years. I remember being blown away by the ending when the cool space guy's identity was revealed to be a girl! When Prime 2 Echoes came out I NEEDED to have it as well. Highly recommend the Prime trilogy. Echoes went on to be my favorite of the trio, but I still have a great fondness and respect for the first and third. You ABSOLUTELY need to play the trilogy in its entirety.

When the game says a Concussive blast is required it simply means use your missiles. You don’t technically “need” the charge beam save for super missiles to break certain objects made of cordite. Sure makes the game a lot easier though! Also, the hint system will tell you were to go next if you wander for too long. It’s pretty generous so it doesn’t take much time for it to pop. It would pop for me sometimes when I was in the room right before the hint room.

I played Metroid Prime on GameCube back in the day and had a lot of trouble getting into it. I was bored by the exploration (something that would definitely not be the case for me now); so, when I ran into a snag where I couldn't figure out how to progress, I just gave up on it (and eventually gave the sequels a pass). Many years later, I bought Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U and tried to get into the first game again. Nope. Wasn't feeling the controls. Metroid Prime Remastered will be my third attempt to get into Metroid Prime, and hopefully it'll be the charm. I've got the physical edition pre-ordered.

Playing this game makes you realize why Metroid Dread's music got so criticized, even if Dread's music is not the worst in the world. But when Metroid fans are used to getting all the toppings on top of the pizza, while Dread is just the bread and a little bit of cheese, it certainly felt like a little let down in that department.

Metroid Prime Echoes was awesome, but also demanded a great deal more patience and endurance. A much more meaty world to adventure, though a much more monochrome colour palet and ghastly barren locations. It adds an extra dimension to travel through, which seriously amps up the path finding on the map screen. Prime Corruption is the most action packed, probably the best ending, but the 'world' has been strictly segmented, which breaks up the play from the traditional 'one giant maze' into sections that you'll be jumping between painfully so when you've lost ur way. Cue watching a lotta (pretty) load screens.

The only visual downgrade (other than the removal of water ripples, which was also curiously cut from the Wii Trilogy version) is the lack of dynamic lighting. And unfortunately it really does detract from the immersion that the original game had. In the original, every shot from your arm cannon would dynamically cast light onto the environment. The Wave Beam in particular would light up the entire room with bright sparks of purple and red. Space Pirate grenades and missiles would also result in a similar effect. The lack of these dynamic lighting effects in the remaster is a damn shame. For as good as the recreated environments and models look, during gameplay, they feel a bit sterile compared to the original for this very reason. Of course, Prime 1's dynamic lighting wasn't anything particularly groundbreaking from a tech perspective. It was simple vertex lighting, which had been used as early as PS1/N64 software. It certainly wasn't 'Doom 3' levels of lighting complexity here, and none of the original Prime games featured any sort of dynamic shadows of any sort (in fact, outside of pre-baked shadows for the environment, enemy and NPCs had literal circle shadows). Still, Prime 1 used its lighting to great effect in really drawing the player into the world. Being able to use your arm cannon as a torch to light your way through the powered-down Space Pirate lab in Phendrana is simply not possible to do in the remaster. Interestingly, Prime 2 and 3 also progressively downgraded the intensity of dynamic lighting compared to the first game - so maybe it was an artistic choice. Although I imagine the choice to remove the effect had to do with the more complex geometry in Prime 2 making it more difficult to render dynamic lighting whilst maintaining a fluid framerate. Same for Prime 3, which, although being on the (barely) more powerful Wii, featured much higher polygon counts and impressively high-resolution textures (even better than the ones used in Prime remaster in many instances), and probably most importantly, extensive use of bloom lighting, which would probably have looked unnatural if mixed with Prime 1-esque dynamic lights. I noticed that Prime Remaster also uses a lot of bloom. It actually does remind me of Prime 3's art-style in many ways. Not a bad thing - but I defenitely miss those dynamic lights (if you couldn't tell). I do however hope that Prime 4 looks a lot better (if it ever actually comes out).
