I'm in the minority who enjoys this one most. While I love Super, and appreciate the 3D titles, I like the restrained nonlinearity in this one. Not even someone as navigationally challenged as I can get lost here.

Same here. Super Metroid is fantastic, but I prefer 2D games to be linear. It's just my opinion though. If you prefer nonlinear 2D games, more power to you. I usually get really lost in Super Metroid. I love nonlinear 3d games, just not 2d for some reason. The only exception for me is Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow.

I just love metroid fusion in general as it uses the linearity to create certain horror like events for the player to make the whole game's world seem alive and evolving.

@@dinar8749 yeah I loved the spooky stealth sections. SA-X was the best villain in a Metroid game in terms of how much I actually care about it's presence. Ridley and Dark Samus are just roadblocks, while overcoming this thing makes me feel like a badass who has defeated my rival.

Thank you for analyzing Metroid Fusion with a soundly open mind. I always adored Fusion every bit as much as Super Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission. It's a highly unique game in the series in its relative linearity, and therefore opinions on the game's standing amongst its contemporaries have always been understandably mixed. Even so, there is no denying that it is an entertaining new adventure for Samus Aran. I always liked to think of this one as sort of the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask of the Metroid franchise. It may not be the _best_ in the series, but at the same time...it's the "coolest" game in the franchise, you know? It stands out from most other entries in its unique tone and approach, and in that regard is iconic to the series all the same. There are elements from Fusion that return in later games, for example: the infamous Nightmare returns in Metroid: Other M. I have fond memories of Fusion, and I enjoy some bits even more than parts of Super, and improvements over the SNES title are very much welcome.

My most nostalgic Metroid game and in many ways my favorite. I was very much a veteran of the series by this point but when Fusion came out it hit all the things I was craving. While I still feel the series has potential to grow and hit even further heights for me it's going to be tough to top this one.

What I don't like about Fusion (and pretty much every Metroid game to come after it) is the "final hour powerup collection". Where nearly half of all items are gated off by power bombs or screw attack blocks, meaning that if you want to 100% (or even just pick up a few extra power bombs and other goodies), you have to wait until after you've beaten all but the final boss and collect all major upgrades, and THEN re-explore EVERY area to get everything. What Super Metroid does well, is that the only areas that have a lot of stuff blocked off to you are Crateria and Brinstar. But by the time you get the Gravity Suit and leave Wrecked Ship, there are NO items explicitly gated off. So, about halfway through the game, you can loop through Brinstar and Crateria and collect everything you've missed, and that's basically it for backtracking. You can get all powerups in Wrecked Ship, Maridia, and Lower Norfair once you enter them (and any collectibles you might have missed in Upper Norfair as well). In this way, when you enter Maridia and Lower Norfair, you have access to a lot more powerups if you need it (and all but one energy tank when fighting Ridley, and 100% of items by the time you enter Tourian to take on Mother Brain).

Oh boy, another Metroid review from you. :3 I love your observations on how this game was designed for the handheld platform. I think it's a point that's easy to forget today. While I do prefer the other entries in the series for personal reasons, Metroid Fusion is fantastic in what it accomplishes. I have a few points I wanted to touch on. 5:00 In Metroid II, I think you might have missed an alternative way of killing the Queen Metroid. When its mouth is open, you can actually go into Morph Ball and roll into its gut. By using morph ball bombs, you can cause significant damage to the creature. Alternatively, you can brute force it with missiles (as you did in your recorded playthrough). I realize this might not be fully intuitive, but it does present an alternative way of defeating it. 13:15 I agree, it's unfortunate the Save Points in older Metroid titles don't restore your health. Fortunately, this is fixed in future entires of the series (including Metroid Prime... which was released on the same day as Metroid Fusion :S). 13:58 Super Metroid actually has one fatal non-backtrackable spot: Tourian (the endgame). Once you enter that area, you can not go back and return. While unlikely, if the player doesn't have enough energy tanks, they can actually make the final boss unwinnable due to the amount of damage Mother Brain's unavoidable attack does. 20:48 While I agree about Yakuza (the spider boss - it really is one of the most frustrating moments in Metroid Fusion), you can escape its grasp by mashing left+right. I really hope you continue to review the Metroid Prime series. If you do decide to review them, I am curious what platform you will review it on (GCN vs. Wii). If you do decide to go with the Wii version, I suggest changing the sensitivity setting to "Advance". You might also want to experiment with the lock-on setting, at least with MP1 and MP2:E. Those titles weren't originally designed with motion controls in mind and I find the "Free-Aim" to be rather pointless. Anyway, keep up the good work! :D Oh, and one last fun thing to think of: Samus is now the last living Metroid. I wonder if we'll ever see Metroid V. If there ever is a true sequel, she will likely be hunted by everyone... including the Galactic Federation.

20:49 Something I've always noticed first time players never figure out, is that you can actually move around when Yakuza grabs you. If you move around enough, it'll release you before suplexing you into the ground, without causing much damage if any at all. It's not at all a death loop.

  • @hiiambarney4489

I'd like to thank you for judging this entry on it's own merits! There is a TON of game design philosophy that went into this little often overlooked handheld game. It's not perfect as is anything but I couldn't ask for more from a Gameboy Advance game. The Story is a little on the nose towards the end, although I never minded it as a child back then. I also have to mention it's incredibly tense towards the first half, giving you another sense of isolation and dread the series is known for (coming from Alien, I'd say this title took its inspiration to its full extend in a good way!) The beginning is mysterious and fearsome, especially from the first boss encounter towards the first sight of SA-X. It get's more heroic towards the end. The music reflects that purposefully. There is a lot of buildup towards almost every boss encounter, the Guardian Robot and Nightmare in particular are so well lead up to but the spotlight is ofc. taken by the SA-X. To think you would have to face this foe that has all the upgrades from your Super Metroid ending? Fearsome! You are a bounty hunter but are also being "bounty hunted", it's a unique twist for the time, it grants this sort of sense of truly being in an hostile environment with a lot of urgency (even though once you know all the ropes this game has it is mostly not). Speaking of Super Metroid, the wall jump and shinespark mechanic, likely gave the Super Metroid veterans a leg up during this game. It works almost identical (with less frustrating wall jumps , due to tighter controls) to it's SNES "counter"part but since I played this game first and the mechanics are essentially never required for a playthrough, I never knew how to do these as a child. It was only after I played Super Metroid, where I had to master these mechanics to progress, where I would learn how to get the hang of it and reach those upgrades! It's a sort of weird meta progression and I can't blame anyone for thinking that this is a bit dumb after all.

The reason why the SA-X protects Samus from the Omega Metroid was because it was comprised of the removed parts of Samus' Power Suit. The Power Suit was directly tied to Samus' emotional state and bonded to her soul by the Chozo as seen in Other M, and as the X mimics practically everything about the host creature the SA-X instinctively came to the aid of Samus and overcame it's single-minded X persona to rescue Samus in her moment of dire need. It is highly posible that the main SA-X _(yes, main SA-X. According to Adam there were 9 other copies of the SA-X aboard the station although each was a shadow of the original)_ was suffering a split-personally. Being an X-Parasite drove it to assimilate living things and expand it's intelligence to help it escape the station, whereas the Power Suit half was driven to reconnect with Samus and bond with her, which is why the SA-X seems to be stalking you; it's basically a lost puppy looking for it's mother, much like the Baby Metroid.

Botw has missions too, but you aren’t forced to do them instantly, which can make some players lost. You certainly won’t get lost in Fusion.

It was such a good comment and formed the theme of the review. I enjoyed Samus' transition from being reliant on the A.I. with most of her powers removed, to being strong and independent, as she has always been. I can certainly see how some would prefer the old style, but I also think the thematic changes were executed rather well.

The things that's interesting about the early nes games, particularly those associated with the famicom disk system, is there was a definite leap in ambition but not necessarily execution. This is immediately evident with the snes sequels: Metroid/super metroid etc. Of course, there's a certain charm to these early nes games but to deny their flaws is just blind nostalgia. It's important to acknowledge their significance but also do so critically. It's what makes this period of gaming interesting. Keep up the great work. I can only imagine the effort it takes.

I like how open minded you were going into it. People often use comparisons as the basis for why Fusion is either an evolution or devolution of the formula, in comparison to Super. While you do make comparisons, you don't really make them the basis of your conclusion and judge Fusion as more of its own game, only using comparisons for some of the aspects of Fusion that are similar to previous entries, such as boss battles and story presentation. While not my favorite, it's a pretty stellar title. It may be different than Super Metroid, but it does what it does pretty well for the most part. Looking forward to the Zero Mission video!

I'm kinda surprised you didnt mention the implications of Samus's actions at the end, heavily implying the galactic federation may be somewhat opposed to her in the future for destroying the space station against their wishes. This game was the main reason for buying a GBA and I was not disappointed. Playing this on the original GBA was kind of tough but thankfully the SP came out a few months later. What a night and day difference! I never understood the backlash this game got about it being more "linear". It had been 8 long years since Super Metroid and people had the nerve to complain about something stupid like that. It's not linear as there is still plenty of exploration to be had. Linear would be like turning this into a Mario game where you only go from left to right. This was a damn good follow up to Super Metroid. The devs wanted to try something new and succeed IMO. It's crazy to think that this was released on the same day as Metroid Prime and still sold pretty well.

Finally someone who recognizes the second half of Fusion. The game starts linerar, gradually leaving the player to themselfes. The more Samus can defend herself the less she needs the AI. And Adam won't help you with the collectables. The only thing that I disagree is about the boss, Yakuza (Spider) fight is not a death loop. You can free yourself by quickly pressing left and right and going morph ball allows you to avoid its claws...Fangs...Things.

The etecoons and dachoras saving Samus at the end was necessary to tie one of the themes of the story together. The whole game is an existential crisis for Samus as to whether she's a monster as the game makes very, very, very clear that ultimately Samus is the most dangerous living being in existence and has committed a *lot* of genocide. That's on top of the game starting out with her going from part human part chozo to part human, part chozo, part metroid, and then soon after that part human, part chozo, part metroid, and part every x species she absorbs. Her humanity comes into question on multiple levels. The game alludes to her being a monster almost overtly early on. It'll have her monologue and then the SA-X appears. The "nameless fear" in her heart mentioned in the prologue is just, well, her - a perfect copy of her. The etecoons and dachoras specifically saving Samus are necessary as a last final bit to draw that line between Samus and the SA-X - another creature with the same power as her - and answering whether or not she's a monster.

I guess the reason why wall-jumping is never alluded to (not even in the instruction manual) would be because it of the ability to grip onto legdes easing the platforming for most of the game, and more intrincate jumps only being presented much later with th presence of the space jump.

The X parasites are a formidable foe and I find them fascinating. (I hope they appear again somehow) and the SA-X is one of my favorite enemies in Metroid despite the poor programmed AI... In story lore, it's crazy smart and I can't get enough of it's survival instinct. Gameplay is also fantastic and it plays well even 17 years later! Will never grow bored of this game. I hope we get a sequel with the same pixel art style someday

I don’t like how certain bosses have death loops to get stuck in like Nettori and Yakuza but it’s Def more challenging if not hard on bosses. This would be the game that gives omega Metroids their iconic GBA look that the remake: Samus returns on 3ds would follow. I look forward to Zelda 2 getting re imagined like this like u said. Great job

With all due respect, as a seemingly avid Metroid fan you should know the difference between the Power and Varia suit by now. It was the Varia upgrades that had to be taken off of her while it was the Power Suit that survived. Remember: the Power Suit is the base suit and the Varia Suit is the upgraded one. Hence it is the Varia Suit that the SA-X takes over, *not* her Power Suit.

It's so weird that games after super metroid they don't teach you the shine spark or the wall jump. It's a weid descision. They just assume you've played Super metroid and that you know the shine spark and the wall jump. Even in Metroid Samus Returns. Granted you don't need the wall jump at all in Zero Mission and Samus Returns. It's still weird. I just can't forgive Fusion for having a road block if you don't know a move that they don't teach you properly. The shine spark isn't even an ability that you will learn natuarlly

My one major gripe with this game is how it locks away half of the optional items until the very end of the game. To me, the point of including optional items is so that observant players can get powerful early on if they so choose. The game makes it so you can only collect 60% of the items before the final boss which completely removes any use of the other 40% of items except making the number at the end of the game higher. Amazing game otherwise, I just really dislike how they handled 100% completion. Super Metroid is way more replayable in that regard.

I was fine with the linearity. Most metroidvanias were as linear as this game. But I could not forgive the unskippable exposition and cutscenes. There are too many and they slow down the pace. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the game. But man it's not a replayable because of the exposition. Gameplay is solid, but it can be tedious. I also remember two sections which were bullshit. Especially if someone like me never player super metroid at the time. First time I played this game, I was stuck in a room and one long area. The room needed me to bomb a specific tile to activate some sort of pole, just to exit the area. The tile had no visual difference from the others, so I just had to bomb everything. There was also one section where I had to use the shine spark just to progress. With the game only teaching you through the title screen demo, I was stuck there for way too long. Until I gave up I saw a walkthrough. You know, it's kinda weird that both fusion and zero mission just don't teach you the shine spark through the actual gameplay. It's not as intuative as using the speed booster, so how did nintendo expect newcomers to know how to use it?
