It was a bit frightening that night at the dome. It really wasn't a roof collapse. A severe thunderstorm came through the twin cities that night with high winds. Thats what caused all of the issues. AFAIK the game wasn't televised locally but they got video from the Angeles broadcast. I was there that night and will never forget it.

I was there too.. I recall frightened fans going up stairs to the concourses as fast as they could. Was weird that it happened late in the game with Twins holding 6-1 lead. What I recall most of all was the Angels' rally in the top of 9th with Ron Davis relieving Frank Viola after Viola had surrendered a 2-run homer to make it a save situation for Davis upon entry into the game. Only 2 batters in, Davis gave up a 2-run homer of his own to Ruppert Jones. He recorded 2 outs, but walked pinch hitter Reggie Jackson between them, before Wally Joyner dealt the death blow with another 2-run bomb to put the Angels on top. As Davis recovered to record the 3rd out, I remember his head hanging down as the boos rained down on him. The Twins went out weakly in the 9th as the Angels stole one from them. My strongest impression from that game was that Davis wasn't going to be in a Twins uniform for much longer, and that did prove correct. They had brought him to Minnesota in 1982 which was pretty much the beginning of the Twins' rebuild, and they were awful those first two years. including 1983 when I moved to Minnesota. Davis had had great success as setup guy for Goose Gossage in New York, but his time as a Twins closer was pretty rocky. Still, they rode him in that role for four years as the Twins rebuild progressed. It looks like he had a great start to 1986 with a couple of saves and no earned runs until he blew a big lead out in Anaheim, and then on this night six days later, blew another big lead. Those two early April saves would be the only ones he would record as a Twin that year; he never recovered after this night, and was gone from the club some time after the All-Star break. His career was done two years later.

I was also there that night as a kid and our family was of those in the picture who scattered up towards the top to the right of that. The water accumulated sinking that part of the roof was scary, but not as scary as seeing the big row of lights swinging surprising close to where we were standing.

@@dandietzel We made it to the Concourse as well as we sitting in the last row of the lower deck down the 3rd base line. I remember that whole weekend being really humid. We had made it a weekend and left Friday after school and spent Friday and Saturday night in a hotel. Only time I remember doing something like that with my folks(I was 14 at the time)

This is one example of many as to why fabric roof domed stadiums didn't work. This happened in Atlanta in 2008 during the SEC basketball tournament, as well.

The game was in progress during the 10 PM newscast in Minneapolis because the Twins played all night games at 7:35 PM during this time frame

This was to put it midly a tad bit interesting. I was there that night and it happened late in the ball game and needless to say watching the roof was a drawing the attention of the crowd rather than the game

I was there too! There was a cap giveaway that night and I remember being amused by the sea of cap-wearing fans in the hallway when we were asked to go out there. Not amused by RD giving up HR after the game resumed.

***** And if I recall correctly it was one of the bigger crowds of the 1986 season as to honest the Twins were not a good team in 1986. They fired Manager Ray Miller late in the season and on an interim basis hired Tom Kelly to finish out the last 23 games of 1986. Of course we know what happened in the winter of 87 leading into THAT season

+Laurel Krahn My folks and I made it to the concourse(we were in the top row of the lower deck down the 3rd base line) but some other people from our home town(one of my teachers and her husband) who were sitting lower than we were did not make it into the concourse. it was fun trading experiences in school on Monday afternoon.

Maybe you noticed but that spot is the same exact spot where the roof has always teared. It is the same spot where it teared in 2010, 1986 and that other time that I cant remember the date of. That spot must have been a weakness in the roof because I don't think that was a quiescence.

ExcessMean no there’s a reason why it’s that spot the wind blows from the East and can cause a tear and it may because of all the other storms get it weakens the same spot and causes it to tear at a high wind

Does anyone know where I could find the complete TV broadcast of this game?

It would have to be from the Angels as the Twins were not televising a lot of the home games then.(IIRC only 50 games period were televised all season that year.)
