I had to commute from Blackburn to Sunbury for 4.5 yrs by train...what a time saver this route would have been only 4 to 6 years ago. All those mornings and nights, weekdays and weekends having to disembark and rejoin at Southern Cross and / or Footscray and / or Nth Melbourne.. No to mention Vline replacement buses... While the commute is no longer required will be pleased to see the trip is now more efficient & easier via Metro Tunnel when it opens. Looking forward to the opening. Hats off to ya mate... Standing outside in the scorcher under the sun patiently filming those shots while waiting for the project works run each way. And having to walk from Kensington Sth platform around to your filming location at the western portal.

Thankyou! And whilst yes it would have been nice back then, no doubt amazing to see how far the railways have come in that time. Plus how much has changed. Nonetheless an impressive commute to be committed at. Even today

Still have vivid memories from 70's - Sunday mornings being driven past Melbourne Central works west down La Trobe St -- Which snaked temporarily left to right past the Shot Tower to intersection with Bourke St. Quite a sight re: 'amazing to see how far the railways have come in that time. Plus how much has changed'... for sure, yeah.... I don't miss that commute at all fair to say - Southern Cross a horrible place to be on a Sunday morning waiting for a Sunbury or VLine train. The return trip to Blackburn at night even worse...

Awesome video! I went to the Metro Tunnel Eastern Portal as well & got a few HCMT on film will be uploading my video tomorrow sometime!

Yeah I believe that should have been retained, same with the ones at Caulfield. May not need to be used often but for flexibility it's good to have.

Things take a long time to change on the railways I guess. General Motors was still listed as a station to be skipped even though it had been closed for like 15 years

I just got home from the golden plains music festival. It was boiling hot but the Supernatural Ampitheatre was going off.

I would see the Dandenong-Sunbury line called ‘City Vertical’ as on the map it travels vertically and if we ever get MM2 it would be the ‘City Horizontal’. This makes sense to me as the group name.

They were probably also testing automatic train operations with the new signalling system while also testing the maximum frequency the system can handle which could bring one train every 2 minutes or 90 seconds! :)

Just been on a werribee service to footscray, and saw a hcmt stabled in the Sunbury down tracks and another one going into the tunnel, lots more testing recently from what I’ve seen.

Hi. Once this is all up n running. How do I get to South Yarra Station coming from either from City or Caulfield¿ 🤔

Does testing like this allow for the track positions to be adjusted once run through? The steel on steel screeching as the trains move through the new junctions and curves is amazing. How does this happen with new tracks? (noob here, pardon my Q's)

Effectively yes. Some tracks have 'points' on them which allows for a train to move from what track to another. These points can be adjusted in order to ensure the train remains on the same track or be diverted onto another! As for screeching on curves, trains do that alot. It's due to the bogies I believe

buses also replaced trains for craigieburn this weekend, could it have been related to the sunbury works or was it just another classic craigieburn outage? 😅

Ah, so that's why trains weren't running between Westall and the city for passengers this weekend. I must say though it did make it difficult for those travelling to and from the Newport Workshops open day, myself and my dad included, as we had to use the Glen Waverley line instead. I feel like they chose one of the worst weekends possible to do this. Great coverage though mate. Nice to finally see some Metro Tunnel testing footage on this channel.

Unfortunately the railways are not worried about events like the open weekend. Great to see you made it despite needing the Glen Like. Maybe next time, you can take a train through the Tunnel to Footscray and change there!

@@StrayaTrains Yeah, my dad was saying they'd have to stick to the timeframe they have to complete the project. And that is very true, I could indeed do that next time. It was a great day in spite of how hot, windy and dusty it was. Not to mention there was an incident involving a trespasser on the tracks near Flinders Street on our way back that caused numerous delays and made us get home much later than intended. But all part of the adventure I guess.

When the metro rail tunnel opens for passengers what happening with Sunbury tracks between South Kensington and North Melbourne?

The fact they've put a flat junction at South Kensington but a grade separated one at South Yarra implies they don't expect many trains to use those tracks, unlike on the other side which will see regular Gippsland trains. I assume this means they'll be disused in regular service and only used for special events, service disruptions and maybe accessing yards.

Maybe used for special events. The HCMTs could through run via SC and FLS to Pakenham/Cranbourne from Sunbury and back if it ever needs to.

The turnouts are planned to be removed to allow for faster speeds in and out of the tunnel (currently limited to 40km/h). However, plans can change, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are retained for resilience purposes.

Not sure. But generally with testing they try mock scenarios so something to do with that. I don't think it will happen much when Tunnel opens

Both tunnels are bi-directional and must be fully tested in both directions. Hawksburn was being used as a turnback. Needed to terminate in both platforms to achieve the desired headway in the tunnel.

Will any trains be running short to Hawksburn or Caulfield or wherever on the SE side the way services will be turning back at West Footscray?

We had 5 come from Calder Park Sidings (+1 backup HCMT on standby), 4 were already in the tunnel from testing during the week and 4 came from Westall Sidings. The 4 in the tunnel went back to Pakenham East Depot after testing was completed.

How were you able to find out when test trains were running? In the next few months, will test trains start running while regular trains are running (ie in between services)?
