Background: Situated in the northern Midwest, Meridian City was originally a trading post built by French settlers who wanted to trade furs with Native Americans. Consequently, this can be seen in the names of geographical features in the area, such as the iconic Arbre Coast that sits on one of the Great Lakes. Following the Louisiana Purchase, many Americans began to move in and displaced natives that used to reside in this area. From that point on, Meridian City developed as many American cities did, with an industrial boom in the early 20th-century and interstate construction in the mid-20th century. However, unlike many other cities in the Midwest, Meridian City did not face much urban decline, as the local government successfully managed to attract many new industries, allowing the city to flourish into its current state.
