Prior to European settlement, the Eastwood and Oakdale Islands was used by native peoples as a fishing village and was revered as a sacred place due to its three large mountains. After European interference, this island was largely ignored until it was bought by a wealthy farmer, who used the land to grow crops and raise animals. After generations of ownership, one descendant of this farmer decided to sell off parcels of land, which marked the beginning of Oakdale's development. Industry developed in Oakdale after land in San Ignacio City became too expensive for companies to acquire. Presently, the major development of the city comes mostly from residents who can no longer afford to live in San Ignacio City. Although once a poor, agricultural town, the Oakdale that exists today is a prosperous, diverse, and bustling city that attracts people from all walks of life.
