Lake Malawi Cichlids In The Wild Playlist
• Lake Malawi Cichlids I...
I was very lucky to spot this stunning Metriaclima Zebra MCAT, I was just about to start making my way back to the boat. MCATS are very rare in the wild.
Enjoy
Some info on Marmalade Cats
Marmalade Cats are Orange Blotch males.
The gene for orange blotch is closely connected with the gene for sex. The gene that codes for colour comes in a number of alternatives (alleles) these being for Orange, Orange Blotch or Beige(normal). The gene that codes for sex of course, codes for male or female (Mbuna don't have distinct sex chromosomes like mammals and birds, just a sex gene on an otherwise ordinary chromosome). Typically the female version of the sex gene is passed on with the OB version of the colour gene. But genetic recombination can lead to the sex gene for male being associated with the colour gene for OB. Result M Cat. It doesn't happen that often because the chances of the DNA fragmenting and recombining with the split being between two very closely associated genes is small. M cats are rare in the wild because they stand out from the crowd and so are more easy picked off by predators and those that do survive tend to be out-competed by normal males for mates. So although they would pass on a male sex gene with a OB colour gene if they did breed they often don't get the chance.

Great vid marc, short or long don't mind really. fascinating seeing them in the wild, really miss your vids have watched the old ones many times over. Just a suggestion for when your back on your feet again, talk through a couple of the lake vids and point out what some of the other fish are. Take care, Adam.

Hey fella, I have been following your video's for the last couple of weeks as I am starting up a Cichlid tank after nearly 20 yrs of various other tropical. I just wanted to say that it's been great and very helpful watching you and learning from your experience and knowledge. I think you are great and good person (vary rare these days) and that your family are proud, I'm sorry to hear that you have suffered, but I can completely understand as I have too in the past. Hope you are doing good now mate. :) Cheers again and I hope you are happy in whatever you do.

Question: Do you prefer shorter clips like this or the long dive video's? I was thinking of uploading both shorter and longer clips? You thoughts please.

Great vid. This may be a bit off topic, but I was wondering if I could possibly get some advice. I currently have a mating pair of Convict Cichlids in a 75 gallon. Everywhere i read says that the pair will likely kill anything I put in there with them. And I'd really hate to waste a 75 gallon on 2 fish. I've been doing research on different types if cichlids and just about everywhere i look, it says that i can only fit a few fish in the 75 gallon. But then I come to youtube and see videos like yours. You're clearly educated on this topic and you're keeping many cichlids in what looks to be a 75 gallon. Am I being misinformed by the things I'm reading on the internet? I'd really like to make a beautiful and active cichlid aquarium. But I don't want to have the fish suffer if they don't have enough space. I understand cleanliness can be a problem when putting many fish in a tank, but I have a very powerful canister filter and I plan on doing water changes every 2 weeks. More if necessary. Do you have any recommendations as to what types of cichlids I can put together in a 75 gallon? I currently have a 27 gallon tank that has their fry in it. I was told to take the parents out because they'd either get sick or they'd kill them all. So that's why I put them in the 75 gallon. Do you think it's best that I put the pair back in with their babies and just start from scratch in the 75 gallon?

You’re talking about South American cichlids which are usually a lot more aggressive than many African cichlids. Some can get along and there is an exception to every rule but usually this is the case
