Metoprolol (& Beta Blockers) Side Effects (& Why They Occur)

Metoprolol (& Beta Blockers) Side Effects (& Why They Occur)
Metoprolol is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension, anginal chest pain, congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction. It, like other beta blockers, acts to inhibit or “block” the binding of catecholamines (like epinephrine and norepinephrine) to the beta 1 receptor in the heart, reducing heart rate and reducing renin release to ultimately reduce blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, beta blockers can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

I slept almost all day and then almost all night. Chest and body felt like a heavy elephant was sitting on top of me. Zero energy. Very heavy, thumpy heartbeats. I had horrible, realistic, constant nightmares. Brain fog. It all stopped when I stopped taking it. And I was only on 10mg! Cardiologist said I had a severe reaction to it, took me off. He listened to me, and I'm lucky. I feel so much better without it. Trust what your body is telling you, folks. ❤

Wake up docs, ask a druggist they’ll tell you about it freely! I had two pharmacists tell me it was a well known reaction to Metoporal.

@Jada3175 I would definitely let your doctor know what is happening and how you're feeling. If you can, make a record of your symptoms (side effects) to show your doctor. Trust what your body tells you. Perhaps there is an alternative medicine or treatment your doctor could discuss with you. Tachycardia is so scary. Best wishes to you, hope you start feeling better soon ❤️

Ppl are saying all these symptoms but let’s start with health. Are ppl actives like working out? Changing up their diet? Stop smoking? Stop alcohol? Stopping their stress? This medication is purposely designed to temporarily help lower BP and to get ppl better by helping them changing up their lifestyle. But if ppl continue to indulge process food, junk food they are not helping themselves. I’m on this med to lower my BP and going back to a healthier lifestyle of eliminating all these things that causing me health problems and not having to rely on drugs. Try tracking how much calories you’re eating. Try taking your daily supplement support. Sitting at home not being active being obese will not help at all. Burn your carbohydrate, go on intermittent fasting, eat healthier, reduce salt, reduce sugar. Go work out! Because no one here is stating how much they weigh What they eat daily how much they drinking and smoking be smart about your health if you don’t care then don’t complain what this med is doing to you

My BP remains in the normal range and only elevated when I go to a doctor appt.. . I had to record my BP several times a day to prove that it was only white coat syndrome. I just started yesterday and my home blood pressure log has never been high. But my doctor was concerned that my last 2 visits bottom number was 90. I don’t want to take this med because last time she gave me something it dropped my bp to 80/53 and i was dizzy. If you give bp meds to someone like me with normal bp that can happen. Post craniotomy I couldn’t tolerate metoprolol. For some reason before surgery a doc put me on a different heart medication i can’t recall. 70 here. So when a new doc was treating me she said that metoprolol was a better medication for my blood pressure and prescribed it. I had severe diarrhea ( these types of discomfort always appear in the wee hours of the morning when you desperately want to sleep). I went to my doc and told her to take me off this med. She reluctantly did. She said diarrhea is not one of the common side effects and I was her first patient to have this reaction. To prove she was right, she asked me to try it again to see if I got the same results. I said, no thank you, and walked out. I then am assigned to a cheeky cardiologist. She never heard anyone presenting with diarrhea from metoprolol and wanted me to try 10 mg. Very convincing specialist. I tried and I presented with diarrhea again but not as horrendous as the all nighter experience. Frickin docs think they know it all. I just wished I had used a party hat in the commode and brought her a fresh sample in a 16oz glass jar with lid.

Other medications were tried but by stopping the Metoprol my BP got so bad they put me back on Metoprolol. When I saw the PA i was itching all over, wheezing with uncontrolled blood pressure. He told me you can not stop the Metoprolol. You have to very gradually reduce the dose . He suggested Valsartan and worked with my primary and compounding pharmacist to make me Metoprolol drops to be gradually withdrawn over 6 weeks. It is a nasty drug. I was having the same problems as @whitetankexotics. Last year I was dxd. with Supra Ventricular Tachycardia with Premature Vascular Contractions. I was on metoprolol for three years and it managed my BP well. After the SVT w/PVCs they doubled my dose to 50 mg. Extended Release. Both my BP and the heart issues are much, much better. However, the side effects I experienced were crazy! My fingernails began splitting and flaking, and some crazy insomnia! I have MS so my fatigue is from the MS and the metoprolol combined.

Used 25 mg twice a day. Felt tired, overate carbs, fatigued, gained 20 lbs in two months. Initially lowered bp but also lowered heart rate from 80 to 60-65. Tired all the time, no motivation. Weaned myself off this medication after I realized this drug is a very low tech solution. I don’t want to end up on a pacemaker or worse because of this drug. I studied the heart years ago and the thought of this drug messing with delicate PQRST electrical waves scares the heck out of me!? I am going to have to trust my own body on this one and find natural diet/exercise ways to deal with the hbp. Don’t play with my heart ❤️!!!

I dont have to vomit anymore but my headache is way worse, I can only sleep 2 - 4 hours even though I am 8 hours in bed, I can only run 300 meters before I collapse (I was able to run 2 kilometers in 9 minutes a month ago), I cant concentrate anymore and I can only lift 3/4 of the weight I could one moth ago. I'm going to pay close attention because I never really understood what this did. Wow, that answered some things!!! Thank you very much! Tiredness, itching , dry mouth, hypoglycemia (that was a shocker lol) cold hands and feet, and that stupid heart burn ugh lol I'm glad to know these are possible side effects now and yet still would rather deal with these things than heart rate skyrocketing for no apparent reason. I take that drug. It's interesting, the exercise intolerance is my biggest problem. There's this waterfall in my state that's very beautiful and you can hike to the top, it's about a mile up with all the switchbacks. It's a hard hike, but I could make it. Back again five years and eighty pounds lighter, but taking that drug and I could only make it halfway. It was a hard stop. I just couldn't catch my breath. Even normal walking at home, if I'm too enthusiastic, can make me slow down.

Without it my heart rate goes crazy, and my anxiety is like my shadow, with it l can hardly function. Oh on top of that l have to take it at specific times since l have to take Synthroid 150 due to having no Thyroid ( lost it to cancer ) and apparently Metropolol and Synthroid can't be taken at the same time.

I was given Metoprolol prior to surgery in 2012 to remove a thymoma. The cardiothoracic surgeon said it would help prevent fibrillation if he accidentally touched my heart during the surgery. After the surgery my primary care physician left me on it because I had mildly elevated blood pressure. A dose of 25 mg Metoprolol tartrate twice a day has worked well for me with none of the side effects listed in the video. I understand that this is less than the normal initial dose for treating high blood pressure.

Still sick from medications but, so much better. This medication also causes brown fat to form in the body. It cause neuropathy. My feet and hands were burning so bad that I could barely walk. I personally found that b complex and Co Q 10 helped a lot with my feet and hands. Each medication can help you in some way; but, it takes something out of the body or stops the absorption of something that the body needs to be healthy. You need to find out what it is doing to your body and correct it with supplements; working with a good doctor that understands nutrition and how the body works.

hate it. It brings on headaches, and fainting spells. Can not drive if I take this due to dizziness not to mention falling asleep at the drop of a hat.

I took myself off of it. Side effects were terrible. The doctor would not believe me. That taking two morning and two night. Changed the heart doctor and they wanted me on three in the morning and three at night. Not caring about how bad my side effects were. Now I'm walking up and down stairs.,breathing better, not choking on phlegm,. I can sleep without night terrors
