My way of avoiding metoprolol side effects was to get off of it as well as my other 3 long term BP meds after going on a keto diet and losing 50 pounds including my belly fat. When I had my yearly physical in January my doctor told me that I'm a pharmaceutical company's worst nightmare because at age 68 I'm no longer on any meds at all.

Way to go. Stay away from all blood pressure medications. I heard (please verify independently) that some BP medications use the same receptors used by Covid-19 virus. That is why high BP increases Covid-19 complications. Not because of BP itself, but because of its medications. Make careful transitions to natural ways with diet and exercise under medical supervision because quitting these drugs suddenly can be dangerous.

@listening4lessons I had no fear about cholesterol since mine was good overall. The most important predictor of heart health is the triglyceride/hdl ratio and it should be 2 or less. My triglycerides, which had not been high, dropped to 56 and my hdl, which was borderline ok at 41 rose to 76. Therefore my ratio is .74 which is very good. My ldl did rise from 108 to 131 which is just borderline high, but keto is not concerned with ldl and neither was my doctor. Clearly, since I lost 40 pounds on a high fat diet, eating high fat does not cause you to gain weight--high carb consumption does that.

I'm 68 also and have recently been on a number of meds including metoprolol. I do not trust my cardiologist because I do not know enough to know if he sees me as a cash cow to perform a lot of un-necessary treatments on or if he is on the up and up. Thing is I don't believe I ever had high blood pressure.

I had nighttime hallucination…cardiac doctors were not so accepting of this…they kept asking if I was dreaming…my primary MD listened to me and switched the medication…hallucinations went away but the medication was not as effective….on call cardiology doc asked me to try the metoprolol again…hallucinations came back so they were finally convinced it was the medication…

I was put on this after being diagnosed with a slight arrhythmia, the side effects I suffered were, a constant headache, watery eyes, runny nose, swollen ankles, aching joints, and struggled to walk up the hill on the street I lived on, and a feeling of the plug had been pulled from my battery. I had an appointment with a specialist and described the symptoms that I was experiencing and was told that the med was not for me and should stop taking it. I was later informed that i had been over diagnosed.

If taking something for years , and years, and you are just the same ,surely it shows they aren't working.???

Keep taking the BP stuff like I have and take any advice with a grain of salt. Salt is absolutely required for the body to function without it you die. I do as much keto diet as I can stomach in order to keep the Blood Sugar under control. @@ThinkYourHealth Well said as well. The snowball effect!!! I'm always trying to get down to THE cause of everything. I had hyperthyroidism which "caused" my atrial fibrillation. But WHAT caused my thyroid to go haywire?!!! It went to hypothyroidism before it regulated itself. Last test, my TSH levels were still within a good range. 2 weeks ago. NOW, though, I am on Eliquis and Metropolol 25 mgs. 2X's a day. I called to lower it, because it originally was prescribed at 50 mgs. 2X's a day. Can't get to the cause of my weight gain! NO answers. Following a quadruple bypass I was put on Metropolol. I still was in a-fib. However, my overall physical condition was quite strong, even resumed working out to a degree, perhaps a little sooner than they had prescribed, but it worked out fine. Then after taking it for perhaps a month or two, it hit me like a freight train. My energy dropped off the table, I was getting dizzy with even a small expenditure of energy. I asked some of my more knowledgeable natural healers and they knew about the toxic end of Metropolol. I immediately stopped taking it, informed my doctor and he was OK with it. My strength returned soon after and my path to getting better resumed. This was nearly 5 years ago and I have eliminated all but two pharmaceuticals for my heart condition. Going more natural sorry big pharma, you lost me.

I've been on Metoprolol tartrate for 21 years. My current VA doctor cut my dosage by half without asking, then she let my prescription lapse, no refills available. The VA has left me without meds many times over the years. It affects my health negatively. Right now, I have been out of another med I have to take daily, for 3 weeks. I have called and asked for new script/refills 3 times. They said she can't write any of my meds till she sees me in office. Yet, it can be weeks or months before you get an appointment. Over the years with the VA, they have left me in a position of not having the meds I need every day, causing my health to be bad.

I have periodic, occasional tachycardia, sometimes with arrhythmia. I only take this medicine when I need it, during these attacks. Tried to take on regular schedule but found heart rate way too low to be functional. Using it this way works for me. Half a pill, 45 minutes, and my heart settles down and recalls it's duty, though it slows enough to put me to sleep for a short while.
