I’m a huge fan of the content on this page. I do feel compelled to mention something from this session that was a bit off-putting. I think it’s unfair, if not alienating, to refer to learners as “crazy people” when they get excited about earth rocks that seem visually similar to true meteorite specimens. You said it yourself, in another video, that a lunar meteorite has never been found in Europe or North America; we know that magnetic attraction is an important factor in identifying the more common meteorites, but how can non-magnetic specimens be investigated when curious folks out there are reluctant to make inquiries for fear of being treated or talked about as “crazy people?” I’m happy for the gentleman featured in this video because he had legitimatized specimens to be given the space for further inquiry regarding other specimens. These types of discussions are extremely helpful for learners, like myself, but I would ask you, as a promoter of education and scientific inquiry, to be a bit more considerate with how you talk about the people who are watching your channel to learn from you. That is, if your intention is to expand the community of folks who are able to discern the details and complexities of meteorites and similar looking earth rocks.

There are only 190 known impact craters on Earth. Yet, thousands of meteorites land on Earth all the time. So, no.
The rocks I've collected in my well have chondrites and chondrules. Even the gemstones have chondrites. Some chondrules even have a widmanstatten pattern. Widmanstatten pattern are also found in gemstones. The rocks are mostly metals widmanstatten pattern. I sent some samples for testing to New England lab and came back not meteorite. The samples I sent were very tiny rocks without chondrites or chondrules. How can I get the gemstones with chondrites tested? This might be the first meteorite ruby ever found on earth.
@TopherspinMeteorites
Жыл бұрын
1) Widmanstätten patterns only exist is Irons, Pallasites and the like - NEVER in Chondrites or gem stones. (sorry) 2) Gem stones do not contain chondrules. (sorry) 3)This might be the first meteorite ruby ever found on earth. (It is not - sorry) 4) Search my channel for the "Gems from Space" Hangout

I've got some I think are martians, there is green, and blue, and red lava looking rock with large crystals formed in matrix. They look like the same lava, but different colors. I found them pretty weathered, but I did find some big ones with refused cracks some in that area, and some in another nearby.

One I found with compression type lines on the outside from top to bottom, didn't get a whole side polished, it's hard to wear at. But took polish like a champ, like a gun blu mirror. And I've got some big hunks from a while back, haven't touched em. But a magnet will weakly reject coming near the sides of the top half, but if I flip it over, it weakly sucks the mag to snug up. I've also got some slabs that seem to have been shot full of little bitty shot. The rock is weathering, but the points sticking up aren't, it's hard, and sharp at the top points like little blunt spears. Anyway only have sandpaper, to form windows, but would love to send photos if anyone on the team has time. Thanks for all you guys do to educate, really appreciate what you all do here.

Also have a couple slabs from a long time back, acquired from another Rockhounds collection. One side still had black crust so I cut a slab, it was easy to cut. But it looks like the lunars I see online, the black soot looking stuff comes off in flakes and is brittle and crumbles quickly. I actually noticed the oddness of that one after it got rained on for one sec, the black started falling apart I quickly, but carefully patted it dry. It's not polished just rough cut, but could probably slap a polish on quickly.

My company does offer a paid service complete with geologist summary. But, there is a free option that is quicker. Nice!.. "many meteorite enthusiasts are rockhounds"... It's said that the first time you see a flash in a pan, one gets bitten by a bug.. Known as "gold fever". Kinda the same for rockhounds who find their first quartz crystal, geode, opalite, etc. who become entranced by the beauty of the specimen. The study of geological science is crucial to understanding how to search for specimens. When you are fortunate enough to have found a meteorite, you will absolutely become obsessed by it's beauty. Topherspin and the bollide crew are aware of this, and together this team is the very best source for those of us/you who have an insatiable appetite for knowledge!..😎

I have looked for meteorites now for 38 years but never found one. I do have a collection which I have put together from many sources. I do however have the ultimate meteorwrong which I did find. I’ve thought of cutting it into slices and giving it to other collectors so they would have something to compare with.
