The missile to dominate future air combats, We are investigating the Meteor. #meteor #missile #mbda
Why is there a need for a highly capable air-to-air missile like the Meteor?
How would the missile affect future air combat?
What are the advantages of the Meteor over its current counterparts?
What new opportunities does the missile offer to the European defence industry?
Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books. They tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. In our videos, you can find technical information as well as historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. While the Second Cold War rising, Let's investigate the weapons together.

    Can europe make an antisattelitte weapon? For example a big missile for rafales instead of fuels. Can they ? For example a big missile for rafales or any eurojet instead of fuel tanks. The idea is simple, jets can go anywhere fast and sattelites CANT change their velocity much! The first strike nowdays is to put the enemy sattelites down fast. If europe makes such a weapon a bigger 'meteor 2' with trigonic final phase they can become a strong option in global market vs US

    I believe the missle, thanks to the new engine configuration, has the ability to loiter in an area and engage targets autonomously, long after the fighter that launched it departed the area. This opens up many interesting tactical options, for one a mid-air ambush could be created.

    The answer to high off bore angle, active seeking, highly networked missiles with almost 100% interception rate, is to saturate the airspace with attritable launch and sensor platforms. UAVs will do the heavy lifting of future air operations. The question is, can you make them so cheap, that you could maintain squadron strength in contested airspace for the time of a whole peer to peer campaign?

  • @richardmartin8998

    @richardmartin8998

    2 жыл бұрын

    Best answer is to refit gen 2/3 and old gen 4 fighters with INS and other avionics packages to be a "poor man's drone". These old airframes (think Panavia Tornado, early F-16, Mirage 3, F-4) will essentially be on a 1 way trip as missile sponges to absorb enemy missile inventory. You can then use other raids composed of high end fighters, missiles etc to come in behind these sacrificial airframes to hit the targets in enemy territory.

  • @billwhoever2830

    @billwhoever2830

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@richardmartin8998 you do realise that modern fighters also have 30mm cannons right? Cheap drones which would cost less than a meteor missile are for sure subsonic, there are drones as slow as 200km/h which is slower than an attack helicopter. Shooting down such a target can be very cost effective with a gun run. For the old fighters being the "poor man's drone" you need to consider the pilot. As stated in the video training of a skilled pilot can be more expensive than a 4th gen fighter itself. In case for a plane to be cheaper than a meteor it would need to be a very, very old plane, even an f4 costs more than just a missile. Considering any missile on the f4 the price goes up. Sending low skill pilots (as it was done during WW2) to fight enemy jets can go very wrong very fast. A low skill pilot with limited weapons (probably no weapons since its just a target for the enemy meteors) can be dealt with mica or even a gun run with the 30mm gun which are far cheaper than a meteor. For example, an f16 would cost around 10-20million, adding fuel and the pilot training the price can easily go up to 30million. A meteor only costs 2million. Finaly, you need to consider the morale. A low skill pilot having to deal with meteor armed jets would probably chicken out even if he is sent to die. Its not only a lower skill pilot which already drops his morale, he is outgunned or not armed at all.

    I dont believe anyone is working on a Anti-Radiation version though its functionality that could be added. Japan is working on a new missile that marries their AAM-4B's seeker to a Meteor body so that it will fit in the internal bay of the F-35, Britain might see that as a possible upgrade if it improves performance as they are currently doing a missile conversion kit to allow Meteor to fit as well (have to reduce the fins to fit). The advantage of the Japanese radar is its compactness which might offer some range/weight improvements.

    The unit price isn't fixed. It will decrease as production increases and returns-to scale are realised. The UK has already started early integration studies with the F-35 (the missile fits nicely into the internal bays.) The market for this missile via F-35 and 6th-gen range is going to be huge - as the video here notes. It's early days for the missile and the platforms. The price will only come down over time.

  • @nikolatasev4948

    @nikolatasev4948

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Bessie Hillum First - the range depends on a ton of things, like how high was it launched (higher launch -> less drag -> more range), how fast the plane was moving at launch (more speed -> more range), how high the target it (diving into denser air -> less range), how fast it is moving (if the missile needs to catch up with a faster target it must throttle up, meaning more drag and less range). Sometimes the best case scenario is given (launched at max altitude and speed, to a stationary or slowly approaching target). A single number is not very useful. Even less if we assume the target will maneuver. But official data is: range more than 100 km, no escape zone 60km. Second - you can bet real parameters are classified. I don't have them, and you are unlikely to get them online. With all that said, Meteor uses a more efficient propulsion than other missiles, as it uses atmospheric air as work fluid. It is also more flexible, able to change throttle and this trade speed for range or the other way around. It should have longer burn time, so be less vulnerable to target evading. I would say that in equal situations the Meteor would have better performance than other missiles of its class. After all, this was the design goal when the program started. Perhaps there are some missiles that have longer range, some of the Russian/Chinese designs are very long ranged, but they are 6 times heavier, can't be carried internally, and are mostly targeting slow moving aircraft like tankers and AWACS.

    Rafael’s I-Derby ER missile is a an over 100 km long-range air-to-air missile with a dual-pulse rocket motor and an active radar seeker, providing combat aircraft with exceptional performance advantages both at short ranges or beyond visual range. The missile has fire-and-forget capabilities, allowing the operator to tackle multiple targets simultaneously. The missile’s lightweight allows it to be adapted to a variety of modern fighter jets, including the F-16, F-15, F-18, Gripen, LCA, Typhoon, and more.

    India has bought both I-Derby ER(For Tejas Light Combat Multirole fighters) and Meteors (For Rafales). That, along with Indian Astra MK-1 Missile which has range of 110 kms (Astra Mk2 of 160 km is to be test fired later this year). We also use Russian R-77 Adder missiles which are our standard BVR missile but we are unhappy with it. It doesn't perform as good as Amraams which Pakistanis use. We also have R-27 semi active ones. I-Derby is said to be very effective for its class however Meteor has the longest no escape zone. Rafaels Python-5 Short range missile is most impressive as per me. The thing has so many control surfaces that it manuevers like a beast.

    Maybe because they haven't been able to pull out one so far, since the Meteor's proven performance is fairly recent, and what with a certain 5th generation fighter taking up so much of the research budget, maybe they just haven't been able to make a working one just yet

    I don't know about the USA, but India/Russia have a running project now for their own under the Astra-3 name, and China I think had a project now for similar with pl-21. Both of those are rated at over 300 km and if one pokes around at various other info one gets the impression the MBDA Meteor might actually have a similar range and that they've just classified this. But basically as you say, it's such a good concept that most other major nations have a known program to get their own now.

    The PL-15 was designed to combat awacs or bombers. It weighs incredibly much compared to the Meteor, so it is incredibly slow in curves ect and logically loses more fuel in curves. In addition, the teething troubles of the meteor have been eliminated and improvements have been made.

    Interesting although not a game changer. US is currently developing a replacement for the venerable AIM-120 D AMRAAM missile called the AIM-280. Since this new A2A missile will have to fit inside the Raptor and F-35's weapons bay, the size will be pretty identical. But what's not identical is its range. Although classified some insiders said the range will exceed 400 km. That's crazy.. My point is that this AIM-280 won't be using a ramjet engine but a dual pulse rocket motor. Imagine the advances in rocket propulsion when the missile of the same size as the one it replaces, manages to hit ranges 3 times as far. Of course, the seeker technology, warhead and all the other electronics based in the nose of this missile will also be more advanced. From the data link and anti jamming technology to new design of the warhead which generates the same results in a much smaller package.. But that's not all.. USAF is in the same time developing another long range A2A missile called LREW or the Long range engagement weapon. This missile will have no size constraints and will be carried under the wings of the 4th gen fighters and even the bombers. Range of that missile is probably out of this world. But the rumor is that beside being a classic A2A missile meant to take out enemy fighter jets, bombers, UAVs and cruise missiles, LREW will double as the anti radiation missile capable of tracking and engaging enemy SAM sites by destroying their radars. Multi purpose missiles are the future. US Navy has open the Pandora box with their multipurpose, highly advanced and adjustable SM-6 missile. It's an anti air missile with antiballistic missile capability and capable of engaging enemy ships. As we speak Raytheon is developing a Block II of the SM-6 which will use the body of the much larger SM-3 ABM missile. This will allow the SM-6 achieving hypersonic speeds, much longer range and, what's most important, a much larger warhead capable of doing some serious damage to enemy surface vessels. That is the way to go. Having one missile capable of executing completely different missions. LREW will be similar. But until then the soon to be operational AIM-280 will be a significant upgrade to our fighter jet fleet.

    @@EmperorLionflame Talking about the classified AIM-260 is nonsense. There's only one thing that we definitely know about the missile and that it isn't using a ramjet engine. Meteor is a great a2a missile but the USAF is looking for a much longer range missile than the Meteor but it also had to for inside the weapons bay of Raptor and F-35. Meteor with a 400 km range would be too large. There is a reason they didn't use the ramjet technology. As far as SM-6 is concerned it is a brilliant missile for its versatility. This way you don't have to load your VLS tubes with offensive and defensive missile but you get it all in one. As far as seeker is concerned, who knows what new tech Block B will use.. Again, it's classified.

    @@yarmud It's ramjet, but meteor is supersonic. There is little point in a sub-sonic air-to-air missile, a fighter could just outrun it. Scramjet means supersonic combustion inside the combustion chamber, it's not about speed of travel.
