    Great tunes ! Thank you for showcasing the belt drive for the 650's . I don't know how or why youtube popped it up on my screen but it was a great surprise to find . I haven't heard a thing about these belt drives before . Interesting ! I am making my way through your videos last night and today . Thank you from Canada !

    Brilliant. Hope this option finds it's way onto the 350-Js. I have a hand operated oiler on my Meteor (½ turn every 1 to 200km) and i am very pleased with it. A belt would still be a nice clean option.

    Sadly not available from RSTech for the 350 J Series. They have tried, but it would mean making the front pulley / sprocket too small to fit into the engine casing. This would be too tight a turn for the ‘Gates’ belt, and not within their working parameters, so RSTech will not produce or put their name to it. But in India it is available. You could order from there. But it would be a gamble to the longevity of the belt.

    It turns out that there is not sufficient room inside the front sprocket cover for the pulley on the new generation 350 engines. I do not want to make the front pulley any smaller due to the Gates minimum bend radius requirements and the detrimental effect on belt life. Pity, but the diameter required to fit inside the cover "will result in dismal belt life" as advised by Gates Engineering. Yes it could be done, but not by me thanks........................

    I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. Seems like the chain of this bike is the weak link (hehe), several owners in India are replacing their chain and sprocket rather sooner. Although mine works just okay, I'm interested in changing mine to belt, too.

    Smooth and Lower maintenance but imo under 1000cc bikes loose too much power. My 900 Kawasaki was belt and took zero to look after but it definitly cost power. Only belt drive system on smaller capacity bikes that works well is the CVT. Shaft looses even more power than belt. Thats why all competition bike only use a chain. I would never go back to belt

    Competition bikes, dirt bikes, Moto cross. Sure. Chain all the way. But for cruisers , and riders looking to cruise and not race, even if there is power loss (which I think is minimal) the advantage of not ever having to lube or clean a chain is a winner.

    The statement that belts are not as efficient as a chain is not true with these Gen 4 curvilinear toothed belts. From the Gates Engineering manual: “PolyChain® GT® Carbon® belt drive efficiency will be as high as 98%. This high efficiency is primarily due to the positive, no slip characteristic of synchronous belts. Since the belt has a thin profile, it flexes easily, thus resulting thus resulting in low hysteresis losses as evidenced by low heat buildup in the belt." and "Chain drives running unlubricated may generate significant heat buildup due to increased friction in the roller joints. Even properly lubricated chains running at higher speeds tend to throw off the oil due to centrifugal forces, making it difficult to maintain proper lubrication at the load bearing. " Consequently, chain drives are typically only 92-98% efficient." While there is lots of Gates marketing fluff out there, the Gates manual I referred to is an engineering design manual rather than propaganda. The "elsewhere" references I can find are either KZreadrs with questionable engineering credentials, comparison with bicycles, or general statements about belts or V-belts, and not specifically about these Gen 4 belts. Here is an unbiased US Dept of Energy report giving that 98% efficiency, and comparing to V-belts www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2014/04/f15/replace_vbelts_motor_systemts5.pdf And a technical paper of chain VS belt with the same result: core.ac.uk/download/pdf/55693235.pdf

    what is the benefit of belt drive over chain ?

  • @Teacher-T-Thailand

    @Teacher-T-Thailand

    6 ай бұрын

    The chain and sprockets needs to be replaced every 30,000 km or so. The belt drive is good for 150,000km up. Belts don’t need constant lubrication, so keeps your bike clean. And absolutely no noise. Also no chain snatch on acceleration or deceleration. So all in all the belt is much better. Which is why Harley and Indian still use them. 🙏

    No oily mess, no adjustment, no maintenance, no carrying chain lube on a trip, quieter if that matters to you, lower long term cost, and smoother. The cool factor is subjective, as is the appreciation of the engineering involved
