Even though Metallica is the ultimate success story for metal (and King's point is correct, they DID open the door for a lot of heavy metal bands), it's interesting how James and the crew act around King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. There is a definite level of respect that has nothing to do with the relative success of each band. You can just see the way James launches into the riffs (and the vocal contributions too) - he is a fan of Mercyful Fate and loves their songs. It's cool to watch (as a fan of both bands).

you make a very valid point my friend. These guys have not been on stage in 18 years but do you really think that for a Metallica gig they did a whole lot of rehearsal? Mercyful Fate was one of the pioneers of metal and as you stated they need no explanations from a bunch of punk kids who barely hit puberty it's like telling God that he fucked up on the Ten Commandments

So glad that they had Michael Denner and Hank Sherman play their own solos. No matter how well you know the notes, there's sooooo much to be said for idiosyncrasy. In fact I can remember how frustrated I used to get 16 years ago when I was trying to learn Mercyful Fate solos and wondering why I could not sound like Denner and Sherman. Notice how spooky Sherman sounds and how greasy and pained Denner is? I mean, Mercryful Fate could not have been what they were without those sounds back in the early 80's.

I've been trying to get that "sound" ever since I first heard "The Oath"...The solos on that album are haunting, not just from the keys they are played in and the inter-dynamics between Denner/Sherman......but also the acoustics of the recording venue...they sounded like they were playing in a cavern deep in the bowels of Hades...That album (to me) is the essence of Heavy music,...captured.

@@slownlo I agree too! There is something special, in the sound of the old Mercyful Fate albums... Particularly the sound of the guitars. Really a band in a league of its own. Different from all the others. I always am surprised when, talking with some younger metalheads (I am from an older generation... ☹️), they tell me that they do not know this group !!! 🤬 Mercyful Fate should have had the same fame and success as the biggest names in Metal... Some commenters are using the wrong standard. Extreme vocalists like King Diamond performing live don't have the advantage of several takes and the mastering process used for albums. The more extreme the vocals, the more likely the singer is to be "off". Add to that the fact that King's been doing this for over thirty years, and it's inevitable that sometimes they won't "sound like the album".
