I don't see the point in comparing because both guitar players are no doubt talented able to play each others solos and the type of solos they've written would not suit the songs of the other band. Solos are there for the song, not the other way around.

I’ve heard all his and Beckers stuff Kirks truly creative and imaginative lines tailored perfectly for the song vs Becker who’s awesome but plays scales and sweeps etc and Marty whos melodies aren’t quite as memorable (melodic) to me as Kirks hence Tornado of Souls which sounds like his version of Paul Gilbert’s Technical Difficulties more of a guitarist exhibition over a generic guitar riff the reason why no one listens to Malmsteen in their free time

I love his interview on Not Dead Yet. He says when he writes he needs to make it as cool as he possibly can. Cuz he knows at some point he's gonna gave to play it for Jason. Becker that is.

I started this video with this thought on my head: "Of course Marty will kick Kirk all the way." But now after listening to those solos and watching the performances i should say that even though Marty is still better imo we gotta give Kirk what he deserves. Thank you both for creating such incredibe solos and lead work that inspired us to be better at guitar.

Mary is more technical, but Kirk's are more aggressive, fit the songs better. However, Marty is a better fit for Megadeth because their songs are more technical than Metallica's. I like them both, different attitudes which is good for us all!

Marty and Kirk are both excellent in their own unique ways. There's no way we can compare the two, even with Mustaine. They are all excellent lead guitarists, it's just they have their own melody and technique. Hands down to all of them.

Hammett has done great for Metallica over the years, and his solos usually serve the songs very well, so I'm not trying to knock him, but Marty is levels above him as a guitarist and a musician; he belongs in the conversation alongside the likes of Vai and Malmsteen and the same just can't be said for Kirk. One thing that Kirk probably doesn't get enough credit for though is his contributions to some iconic riffs. Hetfield usually hogs that spotlight but Hammett is no slouch himself when it comes to writing and playing killer metal riffs.

In his best days, the late 80s, he played them luxuriously in concerts but for me the technique and scales that Marty uses in his solos like those of Tornado of Souls, Lucretia or Ashes in your Mouth are above. On Kill Em All with played I played a bunch of little song with no solos it crushed me only one creeping death but I don't freaking know was played to the full extent meaning no Kirk Hammett solos, even Master of Puppets they broke up the two different songs can you say shit Tay. I remember reading a Kirk interview in the early 90's talking about AJFA and what a complete headfuck it was to try and write solos over some of those odd, angular riffs. He done a splendid job with that task. Now I'm older I'm always paying attention to what music/riff the solo was played over and it usually increases my admiration of the solo.

I was thinking the same with Marty. Dave's riffs can't be easy to write over. Some of the riffs on Rust caused Marty to come up with some odd melodies. Remember that album was written and recorded entirely before Marty joined the band. Dave sat him down and said do your thing. And he nailed it!

While Marty is obviously the better overall player, 80s Kirk brought intensity and creativity. I love them both.

Kirk is a grade 4 guitarist, don't compare him to a great Marty

Dave is a way better rhythm and songwriter than marty

Both of these guys wrote the most memorable guitar solos, not many solos out there that you can sound them out with your mouth and have people recognize what songs they are from. Both my heroes for sure

Dave and Friedman very Melodic and Technical. vs Kirk good but not enough.

they have different styles. kirk‘s solos are pretty emotional while marty‘s solos are very complex and melodic. they are both legends and in my opinion you can‘t say, that one of them is better.

True bro. I understand where you are coming from. Marty is clearly better interms of playing, melody and well everything really. But that doesnt detract from what Kirk does. Yeah he might not be a world beater guitarist but he does his thing and it works with the band.But then look at all the trash pop stars, some pop can be quite good and talented (michael jackson and great performers like that) but the charts today are often just talentless hacks, yet they can sell out bigger stadiums then even metallica. So in that regard you argument loses potency. By quite a large factor. And that just makes me sad really.

I've always been more metallica leaning but if were talking about solos.. You can't say marty friedman is alot more interesting with his lines. He gets so technical while keeping melody being a foundation for it all. Such an amazing guitarist! Awesome solos from kirk as well; alot of agression into his style despite keeping it more basic by comparison!!

Both such great guitarists with both very different styles. They work so well for the bands they are in though so it’s perfect the way it is.

Kirk Vs Jeff from Megadeth's third album. Now that would be an even match.

I’ve always thought kirks solos were more melodic and easier on the ear while Marty’s solos are more technical and blow your mind. They are both incredibly musicians

Kirk could never write solos like Lucretia, Tornado of Souls, Ashes in your mouth. And how about Kirks solo career? There isn't any, he doesn't have much composition skills. Sorry to say, Kirk made some great solos, but as a guitarist he's nothing more than average Joe. KZread is full of guitarist with better skills and songwriting skills.

Both are exelent guitar players with their own style

2 very different styles from 2 different bands... this really just comes down to which band you like more.

For me it's Kirk, no disrespect to Marty but Kirk has more emotion and aggression while Marty has more technicality and speed, both are greats in their own right. I prefer soul over complexity.

Metallica has all my love, and I think it's more accessible than Megadeth. But I think Megadeth is far away from Metallica in melodies and technic. Marty is uncomparable to Kirk, even in technic and feeling, he's a genius, his compositions are awesome, while Kirk just does the job (but does it well anyway ;))

Kirk: Inspires music as songs for riffs and melodic guitar solos. Marty: Inspires music for technically rich in guitar technics and solos.

They are both great and they both play in the two greatest metal band so both are legends in their own unique style and we all love them

Definitely Marty. Gotta remember though that Marty was part of that whole Shrapnel Shredder movement in the 80s. Kirks your straight up thrash metal shredder. He still has some amazingly memorable solos. More of an aggressive and frantic style than the constructed and flowing style of Marty

It’d be fair to say most people on here would’ve been at least formatively influenced by Kirk before “moving on” to learning Marty’s style of playing. And hey… prior to Load and onwards, I think Kirk was a monster player with the stylings of Hendrix mixed with classical metal/rock players like Michael Schenker albeit in a thrash metal context.

Should probably be using live shows from each of them from the same sort of time period, a lot of these just sort of seem a bit weirdly matched.

Tornado of souls is like marty leading you through a metal journey by the hand

This comes down to personal preference because both are awesome.

Both are good and have gone justice to their playing, its the melody

Kirk may not be the best guitar player of all, but his solos, riffs will be remembered for rest of our lives. You can whistle Metallica guitar solos, they're so lyrical. Megadeth guitar solos sound like noise, I'm not saying they're like craps, of course not, Megadeth has had many guitar players much better than Metallica over years, but their solos don't have that special feeling that makes you to remember of a specific song. My wife isn't a trushmetal fan, but she can make Metallica riffs and solos using her lips just whistling. When I play Metallica in my car, she doesn't mind, but when I play Megadeth she asks me to turn the radio off or turn the volume lower. I respect people's opinion if they don't agree with me.

Metallica is better than megadeth in terms of album sales / musicality and they have the best frontman in metal history of all time. James the mighty hetfield. Merallica solos arguable you can sing or hymn using your lips. One quality that not all bands have.

Although not super technical, I love the Unforgiven solo. When Kirk kicks in I just love how the guitar punches you in the face!

Marty always looks more confident and has more command over his instrument were as Kirk always looks under pressure as if his job depends on it

Marty destroys Kirk but that doesn't meam that Kirk sucks like all the "metalheads" says, that is only because all the "real" metalheads believe that Metallica sucks, especially Kirk and Lars. That's not true, and for the persons what thinks that, it's because that didn't hear solos like The Unforgiven, One, Fade to Black, Master Of Puppets, Creeping Death, The Unforgiven 3 (that solo destroys every solo from Mustaine) and i can continue with more great Kirk solos. So, i know that Kirk isn't the best guitarist on the heart but that not means that he sucks like every stupid says... that was for all the idiots what write thinks like "Metallica sucks, megadeth rocks" Kirk sucks, the worst guitar player" i like to see if you can write solos what are into the metal history like the solos that i already say ;) Megadeth and Metallica are great fucking assholes! Dude I know Metallica really well and I know every song from all of their albums until load. And I digged on megadeth even more.And I have to say that the "real metalheads" like you call them are right and I'm one of them. Kirk really suck as well as Metallica,you have to understand that. They are a great band but in compare to others they don't really stand up in terms of skills. Anthrax,megadeth and even slayer are a lot more talented and a real metalhead knows that. Let's say it that way:only guitarists really understand why Kirk suck because we see what he is playing and we see what Marty is playing and we understand why Marty is better in any way than Kirk.

Every solo mentioned in regards to Metallica are all the same key, same scale. Meanwhile, the only Megadeth solo shown in that scale was the Arabian feel solo in Holy Wars.

I agree. Mustaine has had throat cancer & lost the use of his hand with severe nerve damage. Still bangs out album after album. Workin hard in studio to create NEW SONGS. Everytime i see metallica, they are sloggin sum box set or book deal or playing with pop stars or even now they are pluggin sum mobile guitar hero style app to play along with their songs??? Taken a real nose dive when compared to megadeth. No hate, but easy to see. And im just spittin facts here..

Metallica is like a bar band that found their golden ticket. They wouldn't intimate me at all to sit in with them. Dave on the other hand would make me feel quite inadequate. Lol
