In the soundtrack disc of the metallica's movie "Through the Never", you can hear a powerful master of puppets, with a fixed and ripped voice, it looks like James had been worked on his voice.

His voice is much more melodic and clean here. It was much more aggressive and shouty when he was younger. I liked his younger voice to an extent, but sometimes it was too shouty for my liking. I like his voice on S&M a lot. It was in between.

In terms of technical ability, James is voice has actually improved. He seems to be able to hit more cleanly, high end notes and shows a bit more versatility. In terms of being gnarly, his older voice is way better, much more throaty & rough, but you can't do that forever. Much better suited to thrash metal, they hardly sound like a thrash band anymore. I have no idea how Joey Belladonna sounds so good and close to his original voice...that guy looks as old as Iggy Pop and as strange as Phil Spector.

Nicolas Villamil I agree, he's mostly spot on, and so have been their bass players. It all started with Lars replacing practice and precision with improvisation that he hasn't got the skills to back up and lately Kirk playing sloppily too. Getting mega successful and super rich despite all that tends to take away some of the hunger for excellence too.

  • @Metal2Bach

As a fellow metal singer, I can say for me it's because you have so much more freedom in the studio to give every track 100%. At a show, you may be playing for 2 or more hours and you have to "save" your voice to an extent to get it to last that long. In a studio, you can give it everything you've got in one song - and if you mess up, who cares? Just do another take. Mess up live, and you don't get another chance. You can push yourself much more in the safety of a studio. :)

Darker Instincts I agree with your statement. As a musician that sticks to the studio (albeit a home made one) you can really blast through every song. Also as a Metclub member I can download Metallicas live shows from their website, and I've downloaded some of their old shows and some of their most recent. It turns out that in the old days, James' voice would get more and more tired the longer the show went on. Now his voice is constant through out. In fact, I really like James' studio voice as it sounds like the old James mixed in with the Death Magnetic melodic new james. If you hear their Ronnie Rising medley for Ronnie James Dio's tribute album you'll see what I mean.
