I’ve been sober for 2 years now, and this song brings me to tears every time I hear it. It just speaks so clearly to me. “More is all you need” is how I felt everyday for years. Trapped in a loop of power and pain.

I was 13 years old at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas in 1988 the And Justice for All tour, my second concert... It changed my world.

The intro of "Master" consists of some of the meatiest, heaviest, gravel-chewing riffs ever devised. Absolutely timeless. This song got me into playing guitar. A crown jewel, indeed.

In their prime if you hear just Hefield isolated guitar and vocals then you will hear that he is at least 70% of the Metallica sound. No disrespect to the other members, but Hatfield was the primary creative force behind the band.

Honestly, the lyrics are probably the best part about this song. Once you understand the lyrics you realise how creative that chill part in the middle of the song is. The song is obviously about drugs controlling people, and the chill part is the euphoria that someone experiences when they finally get their hit

"Yo! I don't know Megadeth. I don't know" haha that about sums it up. It must suck for every other metal band to fight for #2. It's a story that's SAD BUT TRUE!

Heard this when it came out 1986 and it raised the bar for metal bands. It is still one of the best metal albums ever. And it is so fun to watch people react to it first time they hear it. Imagine what it did to my teenage brain.

In the late 80s I was I the Navy and a guy I probably wouldn't have met in life became my best friend. He was a metal head and me more punk/new wave. Her would always go to shows with me that I liked. Then one day he comes to my place and says "Get ready, we're going to a show." I asked who and he says with a huge grin, "Metallica!" I wasn't to psyched but he was always there for me. Wow!!! One of the most killer shows. This was their And Justice For All tour. Instant fan. A couple years later right as I was about to get out of the Navy, Brian was driving home to Ohio and died in a car accident. I miss that guy dearly and only wish he could see these guys Metallica reviews. You guys rock and are a joy to watch! 👊

Around 12-15 years ago I used to play in a band with an old guitarist that shared studio with Metallica during one of their early albums, in Denmark. In Brøndby I believe. He said Lars was pretty shitty and it caused issues during the recording. But he was very impressed by how much he had improved since then.

Lars's drumming is crucial to the Metallica sound; it doesn't exist in spite of it. Hetfield has said in interviews, that although Lars drumming is not the best, it forces him to "work around it" in ways that are rhythmically interesting.

I was just as blown away and surprised as you guys were when I heard these songs for the first time. Thanks, this helps me remember why I love Metal in the first place.

This song is approximately 30 years old. Look at the excitement. It's probably my 20th time watching your reaction to this song. It's like the first time I heard "Hail Mary" from 2 Pac. Hard hitting.

In my mind, that brief melodic portion in the middle of the song is symbolic of getting a fix. It's short lived then goes directly into the addict confronting his addiction

This is exactly what I think it's going for and it's magnificent. I think the "third act" coming in with even more terror than the first act, with the despairing "MASTER, MASTER". It's the rage of the comedown, and realising you're broken. Reminds me of NIN's Downward Spiral with "A Safe Place" into "Eraser" :)

This is my first time seeing it, and I understand why. These dudes are really the only reactors I can stand no matter what song or genre they’re doing because I truly believe they’re genuine at all times. Seeing them react so positively to a song that’s so important to basically every metalhead is a very joyous experience.

Man, watching you guys groove on some classic metal like this is wonderful. So many people who don’t regularly listen the genre think it is just noise, but you really listen for the beat, the elements that construct the song and melody as a whole, and read into the lyrics. What is so spectacular about the first time? I remember I was a child and I thought the song was good, I actually liked Battery and Leper Messiah even more. The privilege of hearing it for the first time. Oh no. Maybe listen to "When the sun Burns Red" by Kreator for the first time or "Am I Evil" by Diamond Head OR "Breadfan" by Budgie would be cool too. Diamond Head's debut is a killer. Metallica has covered five songs from it. They have also covered two Budgie songs. There's lots of music you can listen to for the very first time. It is not a privilege. Well, I think person living Singapore might see it in a different way but Spotify has found themselves even there!

I really like Ryan and George! They are my favorite for music reviews. They seem to know music and always give an unbiased reaction. However, they keep an open mind. Also, before doing reaction videos, they may not have been rockers, but they were at heart. The videos brought their inner rocker out. They have forever been converted! If you saw another kid with a Metallica shirt in the 80s, it was like a badge of honor. You never heard this on the radio because it was "too heavy". I bought this album because the cover art was cool. Got lucky on that one.

Love the reaction. This is one of those songs you need the lyrics in front of you to fully enjoy. Not only is it a musical masterpiece, the lyrics cut straight to the bone. The way the song takes you through a dark and terrible journey through drug abuse is gripping.

1986 - I was 9 years old. My mom said I could buy anything I wanted with my birthday money. I bought Master of Puppets on cassette from the local music store, and my metal journey began. Today, at 40, it still gives me chills when I listen to it, and it is one of very few albums I can listen to straight through without skipping a single song. Great video guys!

Check out Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf, Megadeth's Sweating Bullets. Much better songs than anything Metallica lol. And Rush's YYZ has the best drums but it has to be watched live so you can see Neil Pearts set up, i promise you wont be dissapointed

1986, 13 year old skater, and THIS song was my introduction to Metallica. To this day it is my favorite metal song EVER. These two guys here are just as bad ass. Thanks for giving MoP this amazing review. You guys are the best. I love the humor ("Apparently we are just getting started." = LMAO! "...But I LIKE it!" LOL too!) and in your face love of it all ("this is FIRE!"). You guys are fun to watch! Keep up the good work.

The lyrics of this song is what make it such a masterpiece. Drug talking to man, man begging for more to get fixed ("fix me"), drug claiming its victory on man with laughter. Metallica is what they are because they make sense and they create the perfect musical background to what they have to say. Unique

This is video is a perfect illustration of why I got into metal. Seeing these guys experience what I had experienced 25 years ago when I first heard some of these songs is a beautiful thing.

I think One is better instrumentally, but this song is better in every other accord. I must say, the solo in The God that Failed is the best solo ever produced… ever.

Love how you guys pick up on the smooth transitions and how well the song was constructed. Their song composition is, arguably, one of Metallica's biggest strengths and what makes them stand out in metal, aside from those sweet, sweet riffs.

This song I consider the best metal song of all time. It is a master class of tension building, rage against the subject (addiction), and orchestration of all 4 instruments and the vocals. And the lyrics cut right into your soul, whether you are an addict of know an addict. Simple the undefeated, unbeatable, best metal song of all time.

Their reaction is priceless just like the song. Pure genius musicians that were in their early 20’s when it was written. What a life they’ve had and let everyone walk along with them.

Whoever said Lars is a drummer obviously underestimated any drummer role. Lars is actually one of the Metallica founders along with James (The lead singer), and inspired a lot of people who want to become a drummer. So Lars deserves way more credits than he is just being a drummer.

Master of Puppets was the song that inspired me to play guitar and be in a band for 17 years. I will never forget when I first heard the opening riff. It gave me goosebumps and I knew I needed to pick up a guitar from that moment on. It is a special song.

This is your best reaction yet. I love you guys. I discovered Metallica during their 2nd studio album "Ride the Lighting", but when this came out in 86' it has been a favorite of mine ever since. Great share...thanks.

I was one of those hardcore hiphop heads, but l i was introduced to metal in my 20s by college classmates, i couldn't believe i was so ignorant. Metal is a big ass genre, you can find alot you'll like. All these years later i'm a big hiphop AND metal-fan. You just have to be open minded. I respect these guys, they are open minded and intelligent.

I was the opposite, I was heavily into metal for years and refused to listen to anything else. I'm now in my 40s and realise all the amazing bands I missed out on hearing because I was an ignorant d*ckhead. Making up for lost time though :)

I love how you feel the music and the emotions go through you. That's exactly how I felt in 1986 when I heard this work of art for the first time. I love you guys. Thank you.

i agree, i was just wondering why this channel is so popular.. i like it, i guess everyone else does too. Most likely for the reason you noted.

Every single song on this record was a smash. The thing about 80's metal was you had to be authentic or the kids wouldn't believe in you. There were never any fillers on these albums because there weren't any singles. The radio wouldn't play them, so they had to be authentic and awesome live

Yeah like now when I buy an album, I know at least 3/4 songs are gonna be kinda meh and filler to get that runtime. Back then that didn't seem to be a thing. Like with Iron Maiden from the first album to Fear of The Dark, there's only like 10 songs I think are mediocre, and that's across 9 albums!

I think Lars just focused on what would sound the best musically rather than showing how fast he can play. His drumming matches the tone of the song fantastically imo

This song switches gears like a high performance sports car.

2020, here. This song has been officially named as the best Metallica song ever due to a bracket run by the band themselves.

Yeah, it's hard to argue. I love a lot of Metallica songs, but this one has always been in my top 5. I'm not quite as big a Metallica fan as others on here, but even I have to recognize that they're bannermen of heavy metal at this point in time. But there would be no Metallica if it weren't for bands like Sabbath, Priest and Maiden 🤘😎

It may not be my "favorite" song ever to listen to. But it is without a doubt the best written and executed song ever made. An absolute masterpiece.

You guys didn't get a chance to talk about the lyrics, but it fits the tone of the song perfectly. The Master of Puppets is drug addiction. Specifically in the second verse there is "chop your breakfast on a mirror." So it starts off with someone who is already in the influence of the master looking for high. Then you hit the melodic bridge which represents the high. That easy bridge transitions to the harsher "Master! Where are those dreams that I've been after?" The thrash solo represents with post drug crash. It then transitions back to the thrash chorus where the person accepts the drug as the master "Hell its worth all that. Natural Habitat." Followed by "I will occupy. I will help you die. I will run to you. Now I rule you too."

As a fellow black person, who also likes and has been listening to Metallica for the past 16 years, I am overjoyed to see my other "brothers" listening to Metallica. As a musician myself, I can really appreciate the musical aspect of them and I see them as Metal geniuses. That said, now that you have heard "real Metallica", I feel I would be remiss if I did not recommend one of their newest epic creations, "Spit Out The Bone" from their "Hardwired to Self Destruct" album, for your reaction fancy. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed, as it captures the same "rawness" of Master of Puppets in my opinion

They are growing and if you listen to there stuff when they were playing outside of stadiums before they got signed, and then their studio album now, you can hear it. They are called Unlocking the Truth. Check out their song called Monster.

Props to giving different music genres a chance. It’s always good to broaden our horizons. You can always learn something that you can then incorporate into whatever style of music you make. When I was a teen I didn’t like rap at all but many of my friends were like check this out and it grew on me and I even appreciate it more as an adult. Especially 90s rap which is so much about story telling.
