I can’t pass any Metallica gig from late 80s-90s without mentioning the importance of Jason Newsted. He added heaviness with his bass and power with his vocals. And his professional attitude kept Metallica going after Cliff’s death.
Sure, Jason wasn’t Cliff, but his stage enthusiasm and love for the music is something to be respected!!

I liked him too, but honestly Cliff was a much better player, and wrote amazing bass lines...the only other that compares is Les Claypools writing.
I love how James and Jason growl like a boxer, bulldog or a pug in a lot of these 1980s and early 1990s concerts.
Jason was the ENERGY and the source of ON PITCH backup vocals. It's actually derogatory to call Jason's singing backup, because he added a whole new dimension to Metallica that hasn't been matched.
Seeing Metallica live in the 90's has to be one of my best ever memories. So awesome, and that their performance is here on KZread is even better so I can show the next generations what they missed out on.

When Metallica came on stage,shit got CRAZY !! People on the field started throwing their chairs toward the stage and all of a sudden, chairs, bottles and more flew everywhere in the air. Next the fences that separated the stands from the field were being torn down and all hell broke loose ! Metallica had to stop playing and told everyone to calm down before resuming. Van Halen, The Scorpions, Dokken and Kingdome Come also played that day but, Metallica Crushed Them All !!!

I think Metallica was very lucky to have the bassists they needed at the right time. Cliff was highly innovative and knew music theory, which was necessary for the new band. He played a huge role in setting Metallica apart from other bands of their time and making them unique. He probably would have continued to do so, but, you know. Jason, as you said, had that energy and stage presence. Rob has the skill to do Cliff's bass solos well enough - most of the time - and to keep up with the other guys. He's good enough for an established band at this phase.
@Deathshuck
4 жыл бұрын
@@lorigoshert6667 I think you're exactly right. Cliff's knowledge of music theory probably pushed the band to try more complex arrangements, and if you look at AJFA, it's a further development of the sensibilities established on MoP. AJFA has insane time signatures and could even be considered prog-metal, because of how complex it is in places. When Jason joined, he became part of a more musically developed band. I have to say I like Rob, but in some way I feel like he never fit in with Metallica, he has kind of a different vibe. He's still a monster bassist, but Jason fit the mold so well that when I look at him perform, I even forget Cliff was ever a thing, no disrespect to him of course.
@BattleScar09

Cliff for me was the melody king, best bass player for me period. Jason never really got accepted in the band fully but love his energy and dodgy side shaves he had with his Kirky perm albeit long. Jason had good stage presence and loved a joke making the shows special.

Badass Jason 🔥🔥🔥
If time travel became easily accessible, going to see Metallica in this period of their career would easily be the first thing I would do. Seen them 4 times since my first show in 2008, every time they kicked ass but nothing compares to seeing them perform like this, the Live Shit album/dvd is always a personal favourite and go to show

this is my favorite Jason era. listen to the sound of that awesome bass on Creeping Death
When the band was inducted into the hall of fame Jason got a huge applause and was still himself. Cliff and Jason are my favorite bassists.

@George Kamil James was making fun of him not me. They wanted to dump him for not being good, but Cliff died so that's why they kept him.
WOW!! It's nice when you can actually hear the bass!!
Jason was something special. Its a real shame he left.
You guy's kept me alive
So awesome that the concert I snuck out of my parents house to see with my best friend our junior year of high school ended up on #MetallicaMondays

I love how Lars address's us all individually.
Jason for me was the best bass player for Metallica.

Cliff is a legend. Rob is a great bass player. Jason WAS Metallica.
I saw you guys on "The Black" tour when you came back to Michigan on June 27th, 1992 at The Castle of Charlevoix. Funny story because I flew into Grand Rapids a week earlier to visit friends. Five of my buddies had tickets for your show, but one unfortunately could not go, so I bought his ticket for twenty bucks, and off we went on the five hour drive up north to the lovely castle. As Motorhead was coming on we snuck down to the 3rd row, didn't get busted by staff, but proceeded to get busted up in the mosh-pit that was flowing around! Had a riot, you guys were great, and I passed out on the drive home because we partied, and it was late! Thank you!!

Lars's drumming is wildly underrated. Especially on Justice tracks.
@ZeeDog27

Justice Album was Lars's peak. After touring with that album, he was waisted, which is why the Black album is slower and basic drumming wise.
@smarkmalark
8 ай бұрын
@@ZeeDog27No? He was never wasted. Lars basically held the same skills he had since Justice all the way up until the late 90s after the load albums. The band just changed direction musically, that’s why the drum became simpler and they played the faster classics less. Also Bob Rock.

This "drum solo" is really lame
Thank God for this salvable VHS! James' signature standing pose and that hair whipping at the intro, killin' it!
Its cool to see this show since its the 3rd of the tour. It shows the evolution of Jason Newsted's bass solo. Notice the part after My Friend Of Misery started as a slap type solo, and by San Diego and Mexico City, became a pick solo. Cool.

I think it's not about Jason's evolution, is about that he is a great bass player with pick or fingers, and he decide use a pick, that's all.

Oh man, this brings back a lot of memories. My first Metallica concert (and first large-scale rock concert of any kind, for that matter) was at Oulunkylä Sports Park, Helsinki Finland, June 1st 1993. I was fifteen years old at the time and it was a life changing experience.
If I'm not mistaken this is the longest '91 show available, anywhere with soundboard audio. Killer shit this is
Love how Jason shouts out Muskegon in Search and Destroy. A hometown boy!
