    I can’t pass any Metallica gig from late 80s-90s without mentioning the importance of Jason Newsted. He added heaviness with his bass and power with his vocals. And his professional attitude kept Metallica going after Cliff’s death.

Jason was by far the best Bass Player (R.I.P Cliff) and Back up singer and then some. Miss the good ol days when they were the Machine. I have seen them 15 times and the last time was the Hardwired Stadium show and it was Pretty Fuckin Good I must say. I still have faith in the boys and hope to see them again soon.

    I'm 55 years old from Sweden.First time i saw them live was on a vacation in Los Angeles July 24, 1988, Monsters of Rock at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. 80,000 people. When Metallica came on stage,shit got CRAZY !! People on the field started throwing their chairs toward the stage and all of a sudden, chairs, bottles and more flew everywhere in the air. Next the fences that separated the stands from the field were being torn down and all hell broke loose ! Metallica had to stop playing and told everyone to calm down before resuming. Van Halen, The Scorpions, Dokken and Kingdome Come also played that day but, Metallica Crushed Them All !!!

    For me Jason was the best bassist for Metallica because he brought in something more than just bass, he had an intense, intimidating stage presence and incredible backing vocals. He simply made Metallica way more badass and a song like Creeping Death became his own. It has never sounded as good live as it did with Jason.

    I think Metallica was very lucky to have the bassists they needed at the right time. Cliff was highly innovative and knew music theory, which was necessary for the new band. He played a huge role in setting Metallica apart from other bands of their time and making them unique. He probably would have continued to do so, but, you know. Jason, as you said, had that energy and stage presence. Rob has the skill to do Cliff's bass solos well enough - most of the time - and to keep up with the other guys. He's good enough for an established band at this phase.

  • @Deathshuck

    @Deathshuck

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@lorigoshert6667 I think you're exactly right. Cliff's knowledge of music theory probably pushed the band to try more complex arrangements, and if you look at AJFA, it's a further development of the sensibilities established on MoP. AJFA has insane time signatures and could even be considered prog-metal, because of how complex it is in places. When Jason joined, he became part of a more musically developed band. I have to say I like Rob, but in some way I feel like he never fit in with Metallica, he has kind of a different vibe. He's still a monster bassist, but Jason fit the mold so well that when I look at him perform, I even forget Cliff was ever a thing, no disrespect to him of course.

    Cliff for me was the melody king, best bass player for me period. Jason never really got accepted in the band fully but love his energy and dodgy side shaves he had with his Kirky perm albeit long. Jason had good stage presence and loved a joke making the shows special.

    Holy sheeyit! I'm watching Jason's solo thinking, "that sounds really cool what he's playing with a pick, not a lot of rock bassists play like that"...and then he busts out slapping like a boss! I saw them on this tour in Oakland CA just a short time before this show, and I didn't remember that, or may have been too far from the stage to see it. It was an amazing show, at the Coliseum, with Queensryche, Faith No More, and Soundgarden! I have vivid memories of the massive crowd moving and swirling, multiple moshpits forming like tornadoes to spin and shake with the music. Long live Metallica.
