I saw them in sept `88 on this tour. Most bands played one hour shows back then. Metallica 2 almost 3 hours as a standard, on a tour that lasted over one year non stop. This is one of the last shows. You can tell by listening to James voice that this tour took it`s toll.

I miss James' voice of that era. This, of course, does not mean that I belong to those fans who don't like James' voice after the black album period. I love all singing styles he developed through years. However, in my opinion, the most significant thing with the issue of James' voice is not which era one likes the most but the obligation of all of us to recognize the fact that, after damaging his voice in the 90's, he struggled like a beast to preserve the aggressiveness and the quality of his voice and not to betray his unremitting love for metal. Occasionally I read here and there comments "James was a beast in the justice and black album era", but I think James has been a real beast after the black album era, in which one can watch him struggle as a huge beast to sing and one can watch him being in pain while singing. This is not a struggle of a millionaire to preserve the company his band became. He had all the money of the world and he could have stopped torturing himself anytime he wished. But he did not, he chose instead to sing and sing and sing and feel pain again again on stage out of love for his music. He is highly respectful for this. There is a verse in the chorus of "The unforgiven", which, in my view, reflects the way alcoholism and other personal demons affected James' modes of expression. This verse is "what I 've felt, what I 've known never shined through in what I 've shown". This reflects not only the way James had been expressing himself in his interpesonal relationships but also, I think, the way he expressed himself through his music and lyrics. He used alcohol as a means by which to say thinks that he could not without it. And I don't think it is a coincidence that all the albums until reload were particularly emotional and, independently of whether one might choose the thrash era or the rock'n'roll era, in all these albums one can very easily discern James' soul in them. Even in the moment alcoholism became an ugly part of his soul, he wrote St. Anger, which is definitely ugly, but still reflects his soul, which was struggling to escape from the hell of alcohol. On the contrary, once he got rid of alcohol, he had to learn how to express himself while being sober, and this was, I think, the most important struggle of his life and with the most striking marks on Metallica's music. This struggle to regain his aggressiveness and his attitude without alcohol is evident in "Death magnetic", where you can watch him writing aggressive music but a spiritless music empty of the 'soul' of the previous albums. And then, after 15 years of being sober, he managed to reach the deepest parts of his soul without alcohol and write the "Hardwired to self destruct". In this album we did not merely witness the return of Metallica but a great personal achievement of an individual: For the first time in his life James managed, on a musical and poetical level, to express himself exactly as he wished without alcohol. And I am writing all these especially for those who criticize the admittedly spiritless music Metallica wrote after "Reload" underestimating the greatness of the effect alcoholism had on James' soul and thus on his musical and poetical expression. And as soon as he won this battle/struggle in his 50's, he did not stay in his throne, but as a loyal soldier to his music and fans he chose to regain his voice attitude. In his mid 50's he did what he had done in his late 20's: he began a 4-year tour, in which you can watch him struggling to scream and hurting his voice while doing so. I believe that these last four years James was enthused by the fact that he freed his expression from alcoholism and he believed that he is back again. Of course we all know the price: Alcoholism again. I wish him the very best and I truly respect this man, who struggled in his entire life to serve his music without giving a shit about the 3-hour pain he endured in each concert while singing. Cheers from Greece.

Was so incredibly kind of him. He certainly didn't have to do that, but I've never forgotten it, and tell people to this day about it. Like I am right now. Heh. We walked back to the hotel with him and he told us to hang out a bit in the lobby as the rest of the band would be heading out soon. Got to meet Kirk and Jason very briefly. Glad you guys are still crushing it. Stay safe, and look forward to the next record!

Best Metallica Monday video I've seen so far....best set list and Jason's bass and backing vocals are great and James is on his game....usually I pick though these videos for the songs I wanna see, but I've been glued to the full concert all the way through as the set list is fantastic. Only change I would of made was "Hit theLights" instead of "Motorbreath", but what do I know eh? I do know that Creeping Death backing vocals were and are amazing...Jason's vocals complemented James vocals so much. "So let it be written and let it be done".

I miss when his on the spot fills actually used to sound pretty good. After he stopped practicing in the mid 90s it just went downhill. He could have been one of the best if he just kept working at it

I mean he only helped write 5 of the most iconic metal albums of all time , Influenced multi-millions of drummers (even tho they won't admit it) and sold how many albums and helped build the Metallica and Metal Music empire. @@anymonkeymusic4286 Never said he wasn't an icon! He's one of my favorite drummers of all time! Being a drummer myself he's always been a huge influence since I was a child. What I'm saying is I'm sure he could have been greater! These days all anyone talks about is negativity, and I'm sure if Lars kept practicing after the late 90s he easily could have gained much more respect, he easily could have been up there with the likes of Dave Grohl or Nick Menza on peoples lists. He was riding high in the 90s! But these days people just trash on him and it's really sad

I was lucky enough to be at this show, and I had turned 15 years old two days before. Every single person was going bananas all the way to the back row. It's still one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life. At the time it felt like Metallica was our little hidden secret to all 16,000 on the crowd. They did like 4 encores and traded instruments for Am I Evil at the end. Great to hear Jason's awesome growling BG vocals so clearly. At this moment Metallica was the greatest band on earth and anyone that was there will tell you the same.
