I think I know another Metallica song that you would really like, it has really great lyrics, it's called "...And Justice for All" it's pretty much about the American justice system and how it has been corrupted by money and greed. the person with more money wins the case, regardless of the situation

I love watching dudes who never even thought of listening to some Angry White Boy music get completely moved by the message. Metal and good rap really share a huge similarity in message. A lot of times its about the fucked up life we live in and how we have to walk on both sides of the good/bad line in life.

  • @mfree80286

Maybe it's just that Metallica isn't Angry White Boy music.... it's Angry Human music, just happened to be performed by AWBs. You really don't see songs stay totally socially relevant after 30+ years if they were written to any specific group of people... the writing is universal. A lot of that has to do with how early Metallica composed; the music was the canvas and base painting, it sets the scene and the emotion. The lyrics are the little splashes of paint that highlight what's going on, handed out as little slices of imagery that instead of telling you a story, makes you imagine looking at the scene from some distance. At least, that's a lot of it. Listen to a few 'first five' songs and think to yourself whether Metallica's in picture painting mode or storytelling mode. Or sometimes both in the same song, like Master of Puppets slow bridge that evokes the junky getting their fix and the euphoria slowly degrading into more need... that scene gets passed to you without a word being said. Only trouble is some people will get it and some need several listens, and some never catch on.

Metallica was the reason I began playing bass. The first three albums of theirs are their best work imo and these are some of the top, relatively hidden from the mainstream, songs of theirs. I love your thoughts on these songs because you really get the messages they're provoking through their lyrics and the emotions they had in dealing with the issues. I recommend Damage Inc. and Leper Messiah from Master of Puppets as well as Four Horsemen from Kill 'Em All. Keep up the great work my man!

Disposable Heroes is one of my favorite Metallica songs. I believe it’s actually about World War I and the waste of human life. If you’ve ever read extensively about WWI it’s some really powerful stuff. I actually listened to about 10 hrs of Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History podcast all about WWI and the horrors of being there in the front lines. You should check that out. It’s a real eye opening experience.

I think you will find that very thought provoking and am very interested in your interpretation of the lyrics. Fight fire with fire is a criticism of the cold war and the US & USSR on the verge of destroying each other with nukes. The opening line isn't "do unto others as you'd have them do unto you", it's "do unto others as they've done to you" which is a very different concept.

When you said CONTROL CONTROL CONTROL you got on to something I challenge you to listen and read into to the Master Of Puppets album in its entirety and tell me the underlying theme isn’t control. And after coming to that realization I challenge you to come up with an argument as to why that album isn’t a masterpiece. It’s a reason that album (work of art) broke open the heavy metal genre.

They work for fans who know the songs already and can ignore the imperfections and enjoy the live feeling. So, no to this, studio version of Creeping Death first, thank you.

Fight Fire With Fire is from 1984, and was written during heightened hostilities between the US (Reagan), and the Soviet Union (Gorbechev). There was talk of a new nuclear arms race flaring up, but it later became a nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and each side agreed to destroy a number of their nuclear arsenal.

As for Metallica and how their music is long and almost instrumental, a lot of people don't know this but they say they took inspiration from classical and baroque music such as Mozart, Beethoven and Bach when it comes to song writing. We learn a lot of life lessons quickly, and learn to apply them faster than a lot of those in the civilian sector. Speaking from 12 years of service. 6 active duty and 6 years reserve. We are not completely brainwashed, and we can still think for ourselves. I love your reactions because yours are real. I can tell you don’t do it just for the money. A bunch of Metal lyrics are bred from doom, death, and destruction. I was eighteen in '83 when I first heard Metallica's "Kill em All" when it first came out. Thrash/Speed, Hip-Hop, Rap, and Techno-Funk was just starting to pop. It was a welcome change for all us kids and our "angst" at the diet of Disco, Soft Rock, and Pop that'd been shoved down our throats for so long (it wasn't all bad, but sure didn't make you "want to throw a brick at your Mom's head, lol). We needed the outlet though. We partied hard, played hard, and now we had some music that was hard. Throw on a little Megadeth, then a little NWA, and all was good...(and there were no "color lines" either...none of it discriminated...Ozzy and Metallica came to town and there were just as many Black kids there as white kids...and that was in West Virginia, go figure lol)

Fight Fire with Fire was written during the Cold War. It's a nuclear war protest song.

Love the multi-song reaction format, especially for a great band like Metallica! Others have mentioned good trios, so I will suggest an awesome set that never seems to be reacted to: Metallica - Merciful Fate (Cover medley of 3 songs by the band Merciful Fate), Blitzkrieg (Cover of the band Blitzkrieg), and Ronnie Rising (Cover medley of 3 songs by Dio)

Do not listen to either of these while on a treadmill. You'll either have a heart attack or break the treadmill trying to make it go faster. Disposable Heroes is my favorite Metallica song.

All of the - "Metallica - and Justice for All" - comments are right, that really should be the next one. There'll never be another 30+ year old song that gets 'more modern & current', as it gets older.. lyrically.
