In Italy we use to say "Trovare l'America = find America", it means reach a situation of really great enjoyment, a blissful state, either because you achieve a very wealthy state or because somebody is taking good care of you and make you very comfortable and happy, in any case it's a situation where one is really really doing well and usually it's considered to have been very lucky. In this case the song describe the attempt to find "America" by use of sensual imagery while self-touching. Gianna today is 67 and lives in London with her partner and daughter, even if everybody knew she publicly came out as a lesbian only recently, for a girl born and raised in the Italian province daughter of a prominent family in her town it must have been really hard, but her determination and outgoing personality have been driving her through all hard times. Going out with this song in 1979 in Italy surely was at least daring. In the video you have watched she was 62 and still a force of nature. I can confirm that in concert she's amazing, funny, engaging, and very Rock!

@@Barbara_M. yes, she recently made coming out... as pansexual! A year before as polisexual and before, for ages, she told to be bisexual. Never as lesbian. She is in a famale-female relationship and maybe for that reason the article you read bi-erases her as lesbian... But she is not. You can check her own words about it, and please respect her own definition about herself.

Love you calling her 'girl'. She is 67 now. And some of her songs were very popular in my country, Germany, like this one here, America, but also Bello E Impossibile (Beautiful and Impossible, obviously), and I Maschi (Men, i. e. the male part of humankind). Great rock voice. And as far as I know she always remained faithful to the Italian language with her lyrics.

she actually sang a german version of her song "Aria" and a bunch of her hits in spanish back in the early 90es for the latin american and spanish markets..

I am german and my Cousin is italian from naples. The first time i was in naples was in 1979 when her song came out, i was 15 and everybody there and at home was fascinated by this Song and by her, she locker so good and was pure sex with her voice and acting in shows like "disco" in the german tv.

Gianna Nannini is a Rock lady! 😎🤘 Usually names ending with an -a are feminine in Italian. I can remember just a few exceptions like Andrea, Luca, Barnaba (very old one), Nicola, Mattia. On August, 2nd she posted on her Twitter a cute video of herself singing a traditional Italian song from the Region Emilia-Romagna. A sweet old lady stopped by while Gianna was rehearsal and sang with her from outside the window. That was precious and what a voice she has! You can find it on her account.

Caparezza omg he is great! Unfortunately he is not "for everybody" i personally like his song 'Vieni a ballare in Puglia' with all that comes with those Lyrics... Like, for real... And then there's the one that launched him "Fuori dal tunnel" i really like that, catchy tune and so fun! ✨

Gianna rocks but you should really check another version of 'America' from when she was younger. On YT you should be able to find a 1979 version and a 1985 (from Rock am Ring, ugly quality). She really is the queen of italian rock!

In an interview she said when she was a teenager she got her hand into a machine in the factory her parents had and she kept screaming so hard that she damaged her vocal chords. Since that event her voice is like that. She's a force of nature, comparable to Tina Turner in my eyes and she's also known outside Italy, like in Germany and Greece at least my generation (born in the 70ies) know her and love her.
