Just some info.. Ren came up with the original tale of "Jenny" after reading an article in a news paper about the murder of a prostitute in London by a young lad, someone commented in the article "It's such a shame", which is why it is so prominent in the song. Violet died in 2005, the tale of "Jenny" was released in 2019, which is why Screech and Jenny are 14 years old n the song. Jenny was 14 years old and walking the streets of London in high heels indicating she was a "working" girl ("she'd walked these streets 1000 times before"). Screech got his nickname from being "quick on his feet", "screech" being the sound trainers make as you dodge and run on an indoor training court. "The blade that could slice concrete" was actually a line in a tv advertisement in the 80's/90's IIRC on late night shopping channels. When Screech tries to meet up with his girlfriend and she tells him she's busy, she was busy (cough cough) being with Patrick (Ren confirmed this) After the birth Jenny and Screech would probably have been separated and gone into foster care or an orphanage, they would never have known each other or met until that fateful night when they meet in an alleyway. The tales are a generational story of abuse and the victims of abuse, Jenny much like her mother kept quiet and accepted her fate in silence and resignation, Screech was reactive and quick to anger just like his father. What many people fail to understand is that Screech although the "obvious" bad guy in the tales, he was only 14, he had been brought up in foster care or an orphanage, he was obviously not being given the help/support/discipline he needed at that age in that situation, and from the moment he fatefully turned the corner and met Jenny face to face everything he did was fear and adrenaline fueled reactions to a situation that rapidly spiralled out of his control... Suffice to say, Screech was the bad guy, but he was also a victim as well, and I think that, that is the whole point of the story Ren tries to get across "It's such a shame". (I post this as a regular heads up on most Tales reactions)

Great summary, extremely thorough. Just one picky little thing, Screech was "reactive" NOT "reactionary." The latter term refers to a political ideology and has nothing to do with one's temperament. It's misuse is becoming more and more common, I get it, it seems like it would mean someone who is quick tempered, etc, but instead it means someone who thinks even the status quo is too radical, and seeks to return to a hierarchical, often monarchist past, not at all like Screech But like I said, a really excellent summary, you left nothing out, and that's hard to do. Thanks

I also often add that since when Ren wrote/filmed Jenny (and maybe "Screech's Tale" too, but that's less relevant) he had no concept he'd end up twisting the story into the two being connected in any way. So in "Jenny's Tale" he had no reason to give any description of Jenny as being a 14yr old. When he wrote/filmed Jenny, he was describing Jenny as the person he'd understood her to be in the news article (she was a young woman, but there was no mention of her being a child prostitute in the original article). So it's unfortunate that writing "Violet's Tale" turned Ren's description of Jenny into a red herring for the audience - some may say "no, that makes the twist EVEN BETTER!" but either way, it is what it is, and given that Ren's taken off via reaction channels, it always feels unfair to me that reactors are left to try to piece everything together in front of a camera within seconds (or minutes, at best), usually not knowing yet that the fans will (mostly) be kind to them... and woe betide them if they say something that indicates that they might not have pieced it together correctly. Anyway. It's quite the story, and it's incredible that he can not only make it work, but make it utterly engrossing. And the instrumental guitar interludes he wrote for each song never fail to sweep me away. Violet's theme is one of my favourite bits of music in modern entertainment (and it holds up against an awful lot of stuff from throughout history for me too, and I've been playing classical piano for 44 years).

  • @InconSteveHable

    @InconSteveHable

@@rebeccaburnell9319 I agree with the first paragraph, in the newspaper article the woman was a prostitute but no age was mentioned... Ren specifically paints (I say paint not write because Ren can make you see images in your mind) Jenny as walking the streets in high heel shoes, streets she's walked 1000 times before and it's only right at the end you find out Jenny is 14. As to the second paragraph, many people watching with no prior knowledge can construe that Jenny is a prostitute, again there is no reference to age until the very end so age remains irrelevant, so I wouldn't really call it a red herring especially if the listener has no prior knowledge on the story it's based on. I kinda agree that it's a "little" unfair to expect a reactor to get every nuance of a song first time on a reaction, so I don't ever expect them to do it, which is why I regularly post comments as "info" rather than "you missed this/that" for other viewers as well as the reactor. I especially try to highlight that Screech was a victim in this story which many people don't like to admit. Everything is Black and White, something is right or wrong, shades of grey only get involved when it's time to punish or reward those who did right or wrong. I totally agree with the last paragraph.

Dude, we're Renegades! We all probably watched hundreds of reactions to the Tales already, we know they lead to a longer video :D Don't worry, we're used to it ^^ And we like it that way,, just for reactions like yours! To see people fall in love with Rens music with every single chord he plays! As a metalhead myself I know exactly what you mean by suddenly listening to lyrics and how important they are sometimes. Compared to his catalogue there are only a few videos like that, but for more performance you should check out Money Game 1 & 3 (part 2 is a lyric video but it's still cool as hell). For Money Game Pt. 1 Ren & Sam needed 184 takes to make it as perfect as Ren wanted it to be Don't worry about your schedule, we will be there whenever you're reacting to Ren! May it be in a day, a week, a month or even a year

The best part of watching someone react to this video is the 10 seconds following the end. Did they get it... yes (yay) and then watching the reactor fill in an entire history to make the story work. It's actually a pretty interesting commentary on nature vs nurture, the foster system and generational violence but it's all done so well you have to sit with it to flush it out.

Not like broadway. Broadway has a lot of production and a lot of stuff going on to distract you. This is the exact opposite: Just the minimum: two very talented people working together on an idea with what they have. This is more like a Street play than stage(d) play. Comparing this to broadway is like comparing busking to a live act at coachella. The vibe might be the same but two different situation. No hating just my opinion

Ohhh yes, TesseracT is my favourite band too! 🤩🤩I'm heavily into prog metal in general. Don't want predictable music. That's why Ren gives me eargasms! His song structures, his lyrics, his choice of styles, so dang unpredictable, fresh and interesting! His style is so versatile too, he's got everything from rock to fast rap, drum and bass, to bardcore... and his voice.. jeez. He's special for sure.

I've always thought he had a reggae vibe too, and the guitar is very classical Spanish style. It's so cool how he mixes different sounds by just playing and singing whata natural for him.

They test now, if you get a tick bite. One of the rare side effects is alpha-gal. You develop an allergy to red meat. Another....potential psychosis. DAMN. Two of my friends with abrupt development of emotional problems tested positive for Lyme. Further tests being run. Ticks are no f'ing joke anymore. Yeah, Ren....He is AWESOME....and I haven't heard ONE that I didn't like....they are ALL different! YES! Not different versions of the same song/technique. His guitar leaves my jaw on the floor. LOVE IT! This is a Shakespearian tragedy. Three people's life story in 13 minutes. At 65, I had a tendency to listen to "old" music, but some of the young artists coming out now are FANTASTIC. Make it smart; make a social commentary. Make it into ART. Acting, speaking, poetry....make music MORE. Make some cutbacks on the flashy costumes, background dancers, computer graphics, autotune.....Just a guy and a guitar. (With a STELLER cameraman, Samuel, I didn't forget about YOU!) Samuel is REALLY good at what he does, too. I LOVE seeing him do songs with other artists...share the talent, get your people together. Metal? Oh, hell yes. This old lady was a roadie in the 80's. I love Napalm's selection, new metal in Maori, Mongol, Icelandic....just...all of them. Thanks for reacting to this! Ren is the bardcore master. Yes, I read Shakespeare as well. The knocking, the cell phone, the gun....❤❤❤❤

I loved your reaction and how your musician brain gradually got drawn into the performance and the emotion of this ever darkening tale! So many people with different musical tastes (and ages and countries) are coming together and having their minds opened to each other through Ren which is just fantastic. I agree with you that Ren is best experienced by seeing the live performances as it adds so much more to the musical element. I have no musical ability and focus firstly on lyrics so this was a very uncomfortable performance to hear/see at first. He tells an uncomfortable truth without judgment, all wrapped up in a compelling performance. The acting is incredible and when Stevie peels back Violet's eyelids it is just chilling. I'd love to know the thought process behind how he decided on all the details of this. One thing in particular that intrigues me is the guitar introductions to each piece. Are they intended to be lighter moments of relief or just a ploy to distract us before plunging us back into the increasingly dark and grisly tales? I know Violet's tale was created a couple of years after the first two and it really elevates the whole piece to another level. Cheers

I'm a new Ren fan. I write, sing and play my own music, some guitar, more with piano. I can sing my heart out in front of an audience, but severe stage fright makes my hands shake like crazy. Performance just isn't my thing. I make my music mostly just for me. ..... and Ren is inspirational, for sure. I haven't looked back in comments, but if you like some beautifully sad, soulful shit, you should definitely check out his duet with Chinchilla, "Chalk Outlines". Their vocals.... harmony.... their dynamics.....fucking fantastic. The live video version is best. I thank you for your honest reactions!

Its cool you mentioned King Gizzard, they play here in a place called The Caverns in Tennessee and it's normally a 4 day show, two days are inside a literal cave, two day are on top of the mountain here. They stayed at the hotel I worked at and were really awesome people, we were usually happy to hear they were staying with us because they were really chill. Their fan following is pretty rabid, I haven't gotten too much into their music yet but I want to, maybe ill dive into more of your reactions for exposure.

His videos are masterpieces. None of them are a let down and even the lyric videos pop. His Biggest video was Money Game part 3 and I think they still spent less than 2000 pounds. Most of them are done in locations they were not authorized to be in. Hi Ren took 4 takes (live of course) but the owner of the location was pissed and kicking them out, they had to beg for one more take. (The Speech at the end was the third take). When you watch some of his other videos, if they aren’t lyric videos they are in fact live one takes (some, like Animal Flow, took 187 tries). It’s not just his musical ability, for me, he produces, directs, creates his own beats, mixes, every damn thing. He’s quite honestly, a genius.

Actually, in an interview Ren said that now that he has some money to work with, he wanted to put it into a magnum opus video, so MONEY GAME 3 cost 25,000-30,000 pounds (his bespoke suit alone probably cost at least 2,000 pounds). Prior to that, he's said he was never able to spend more than 1,000 pounds on any of his 150-ish videos, and some, like CRUTCH and POWER had a budget of zero. Just pure talent and creativity. I'm a videographer, and if you asked me to recreated MG3, I would tell you you needed between $50,000-$80,000, and that's if everything went right, which it rarely does.

The rain contraption they created kinda went cockeyed and the viola musician on the far left as you watch the video was rained on. Both herself and her bow. From the chatter about it I was left with the impression that lady was a bit of a Hero. That part could Only be done Once. Yet when hit with the COLD water she "took it", only slightly moving her bow in hopes of saving it. Ren had it restrung for her and made sure it was done properly. Restringing a bow with the hairs from an actual horse's tail is not inexpensive.

I discovered Ren through Hi Ren over a year ago, and I just love him. But just like you, I need the video and not just the audio. There are a few songs that’s made it to my playlists (Power, Crutch and a few more) but I need the visuals, the emotion, the storytelling. As I said on your last Ren reaction; I followed your journey through Papa Emeritus and Ghost - and this rabbit hole is a lot deeper!

Great reaction! I see a lot of comments recommending the MONEY GAME TRILOGY, which I completely support with one caveat. When you get to PART 2, make sure you choose the OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO. The LIVE version (which has it's own charms) is only 1/3 of the entire song and has no music (and the music is great). MG1 took six days and 186 takes to get perfect. It's been joked that that's why MG2 is a LYRIC VIDEO, but as lyric videos go, it's KILLER!

😂🤣 😂 I'm 52 and I've never been such a fan as I am of Ren ... I might be slightly obsessed. My kids know that every time I see them they are going to have to listen to several Ren songs. .I always say "just listen to this one song" but it turns into "just one more" and then "maybe one more" I have told people in the checkout line in grocery store about Ren .. made my 87 yr old grandma and all my aunts listen to Ren, coworkers and of course all my friends. I feel honored to be the one to introduce them to Ren. ❤

That's one of my favorite songs of his. I'm fairly new so I made a Playlist with Losing It, Down on the Beat and Illest of Our Time. Was hoping to find more... stuff with beats like that. Good workout stuff, but as much as I love all his stuff those things are set apart from most of the rest of his stuff. I'll just add new stuff as it comes out. Ren is taking up my Playlists. Made a bunch of new ones for him. Interviews is one. Everything Ren is another - I put stuff that OTHER people post about him on there, plus the aforementioned Ren Beats list. Love him so much.

I see a Kiesel guitar (at least the case) in the background. I used to race with Kiesel and family with SCCA autocross. A very talented racer and generous person overall. He would often build a guitar and offer it as a prize for winning. Him and his family has won multiple national championships.
