Ren has no one genre. He does EVERYTHING. Besides this style, he's a member of an indie rock band, The Big Push, he does EDM and Drum and Bass, he does rap and grime and hip hop, classical, he plays guitar, piano, bass, drums, sings, raps, producers and engineers all his own recordings, acts, writes, co-directs his own videos. Dude is a limitless talent.

You forgot the melodica, the foot tambourine, and the mouth trumpet... I also saw a cello in his apartment and I'm guessing it wasn't for decoration. Only 2 guitar lessons, and I'm assuming he's a self-taught mouth trumpeter.

Ren wrote most of his original songs while sick in bed and in terrible pain for the best part of 10 years. He was incorrectly diagnosed with many mental conditions and prescribed medications that gave him psychosis. Eventually they discovered that it was Lyme disease, but after 10 years untreated it has ravaged his body (ironically he still looks shredded!). He has had dozens of interventions including stem cell therapy and has been on a 5-day per week treatment in Canada for more than a year. Before starting this last treatment he recorded some videos (including this) and they have been released every few months while he's in hospital. The best thing about Ren is that every song is really different, They are fun, insightful, tragic, and hilarious. He always surprises! Enjoy the Ren Rabbit Hole, full of exciting new discoveries.

I followed your journey through all of Ghost, and let me tell you that Ren is an even deeper well. He’s a swiss army knife when it comes to music. I could recommend at least 20 songs to follow this one up, but I’ll settle for five in different genres: “How to be me” live duet with Chinchilla. “Crutch” duet with Bibi. “Su*cide” “Illest of our time” (just to hear his versatility) “Power”. I’ll come back later!❤️

YES! I can't explain how happy am you hadn't seen this yet. He is from Wales, in the UK. A lot of people compare him to a modern day bard, since he practically acts out his music. This song is the best intro to Ren, but I wouldn't say it's his best. If you liked his guitar playing in this, you should 1000% look into "The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Official Music Video)". Though fair warning, it's a dark ass story with some pretty detailed descriptions of violence. So glad you enjoyed this though! So, since you said you wanted to know what is up with him, here is some context: So, he doesn't have split personality disorder, (although that is common mistake people make with this song.) He was a musician in a band in his late teens, but around 17-18 he contracted Lyme disease. The real issue came from the fact that he was misdiagnosed so it wasn't getting treated. The disease progressed to the point where he spent up to 23 hours a day in bed at some points, and that was his life for the next 9 years. (That's why he talks about being sick for 10 years in the song) He has talked about how when he was able to get up and function, all he wanted to do was work on music. Eventually they realized what was going on and he started getting proper treatment, but I know by that point he had some brain damage. Last I heard (about a year ago) he was living in Canada for further treatment.

Great summary! He never stopped learning instruments and writing and recording music while bedridden, but he got stem cell treatments in 2016/17 which allowed him to get out into the world again. That''s when he started the band The Big Push. Eventually he needed more treatment from a specialist in Canada, so they disbanded. He prepared the "Sick Boi" album, with videos for almost every track, to release while he was away. Just before he left the UK in Dec 22, he recorded "Hi Ren", which blew up like crazy, and the album debuted at #1 in the UK, all while he was unable to perform or promote. And he's entirely independent, no label, no radio play. The treatment is working, but has been extended several times; he expects it to continue at least till April, which will be some 15 months out of his life during the time when he's finally starting to see musical success after a dozen years of working in obscurity.

It's always so satisfying watching how people enter this song completely unaware and then be amazed by it. I get that you're not a lyrics kind of guy or a guy who likes singers who critisise themselves all the time. But before you delve into more of Ren's music catalogue, it's important you know that Ren's lyrics are all justified by what he's been through. Ren started playing at a young age and when he was a teenager was spotted by Sony while busking (playing in the streets for tips) in Brighton (UK) and was offered a contract. His young life's dream was becoming reality. But no sooner he got started on his first album, he started getting ill. So sick in fact that he couldn't play live anymore or work on his music. After months of trying and going to drs and not getting better, Sony and Ren went their separate ways amicably. This left Ren hugely disappointed and lost. He was still a teenager. Drs couldn't figure out what ailed him so they decided it was all in his mind and proceeded to medicate him. Misdiagnosing him with a variety of psychological diseases, Ren was given pills and therapy and told to get on with it. Meanwhile Ren was in so much physical pain, he could barely shower and at it's worst spent 23 hs a day in bed unable to even read, eat properly or watch tv at times. This went on for around 10 years! Ren watched as his friends get girlfriends, jobs, houses, kids while he stayed the same, suffering in his room not knowing why. In the midst of all this , Ren suffered a couple of psychotic breaks too. Self elimination wasn't even an option for espaing his torment either, as when just before he fell ill, Ren s childhood friend comitted that act. Ren was devastated but also saw how it afected tjose who loved his friend (Joe) too and realised he could never put his loved ones through that. Throughout however, Ren managed to write around 1000 songs bc music and hope got him through which is why Hi Ren is so powerful. Only around 3 years ago did Ren find out that he in fact had been suffering with Lyme's Disease all along. By then his disease had done it's damage, but Ren managed to get stem cell transplants that helped and he has been getting further specialist treatments in Calgary, Canada where he has moved to temporarily. He's been there for over a year, just around the time he released Hi Ren. The traction it got online gave him the energy to get through the rigorous treatments he has to go through. So when you listen to some of his music, please don't think he is just complaining for the sake of it. He has really suffered and expressing it has really got him through the hard times. That being said, not all of Ren's songs about his experiences and his music is amazing. My suggestion to you as a guitarist are the Trilogy of The Tales of Jenny and Screech (which deserves an award IMO) and Bongo Bong by his band The Big Push which is very guitar based. Here us the link to the complete version of The Tales of Jenny and Screech kzread.info/dash/bejne/ho110NOKXZCxiJM.htmlsi=ERrrnEBbD1p6oX1L Sorry for the long comment. Subbed to hear more❤

Great reaction! If you want to see what Ren does with a full band, check out The Big Push War Pigs mashup (look for the one with Ren wearing red suspenders) and also check out Money Game Part 1 (intense), part 2 (lyric version), and part 3 (like Hi Ren, another story-ish song with top tier performing skills). I don't think I've heard a genre of music he can't do, and yet no matter what genre it is, even if it is a cover song, the music is so uniquely Ren. Like you, I was always partial to a full rock band over any other genre. Ren is the first artist in a long time that broke that model completely. He's all over my playlist now. I think you will see why. The Ren Rabbit Hole is deep. Enjoy!

Middle age lady here too, always a metalhead in the 70s and 80s. I am now learning a lot more about hip-hop in general through Ren. As a genre it's never going to be my 'thing' apart from a couple of artists similar to Ren, e.g NF, who I love as well. But Ren just does so much, seeing him rock Black Sabbath War Pigs on the street with The Big Push, and then watching him hammer classical piano in The Money Game pt 3, and THEN just for fun, watching the astonishing guitar skills in the Jenny and Screech Trilogy - Ren just blows me away with everything he does, regardless of whether it's my preferred genre, he just delivers his work in such a compelling way every single time! It's amazing how he's dragged us slightly more mature folk into the journey with him. :)

Subbing for more Ren! Here’s some info and songs 🖤 🔥🔥🔥 Welcome to the Renaissance! Ren is my favourite artist of all time. I say artist because he is a multifaceted diamond! From singing (all styles) to rapping (bars/flows/schemes for days), Bardcore (story telling) beatbox, makes his own beats, scatting and a multi instrumentalist (guitars, bass, drums, melodica and more). On top of that he is the most beautiful human being inside and out who has been through and continues to go through absolute hell. Ren is 33 from Anglesey, Wales originally but spent most his life in Brighton, England. He has been very ill for years, at one point being completely bed ridden. He was misdiagnosed for years, being told he was bipolar, had M.E and more and was prescribed medications that made him worse and ended up in psychosis. It turns out Ren had Lyme disease which has caused havoc on his body. He’s been living in Calgary, Canada all year receiving intense medical treatment for his brain damage and mast cell activation disorder amongst other things that were caused by the Lyme disease. He started off making beats at 12 and selling CDs then moved on to busking. He was part of a band called Trick The Fox and was signed to Sony but they didn’t renew the contract after his health deteriorated. He then started The Big Push. They went on hiatus the end of last year after 5 years partly due to his move to Canada and also because the other members are also soloists and were moving around too. Ren has had Lyme disease since ~18 yrs old, but it was misdiagnosed for years and years. He was told it's all in his head, misdiagnosed, got meds that gave him terrible reactions etc. He was bed-bound for a couple yrs, in intense pain, and could barely leave his room for even more yrs. Of course all that physical illness would mess with your head, as well as inappropriate meds, so he did have mental issues as a result of his physical issues. He finally got proper treatment but still is undergoing treatment in Canada for the last year & will probably have life long issues. Even so, he's back in the land of the living now, lucky for everyone.

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. Even the song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

It will be a long reaction, but you won't regret it! His guitar skills are on full view in each one, it's so skillful! Go down the Ren rabbit hole, this guy is amazing. Watch his trilogies...Money Game, The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full version) and be prepared to be blown away. Ren is from my neck of the woods and if you read about him he has been going through a lot health wise and for him to be doing what he does is truly amazing. He connects with so many people and says the truth in his songs about what's really going on in the world. You definitely need to check more of his stuff out and do reactions to it. Glad you enjoyed this.

This is a one-take and recorded live, like many of his other vids. A lot of Ren's music and lyrics contain references to stuff that inspired him. Classic reggae riffs turn up in a few places. He even references Grieg's piano concerto at the start of Money Game 3. If you want something to get your teeth into, try his trilogies. "The tale of Jenny and Screech" is a dark twisted story about 3 people, inspired by a real news story in 2005. "The Money Game" trilogy is Ren's opus magnum. 3 epic lessons about us and our relationship with money.

Welcome to the multitalented genius Ren. This masterpiece is just the tip of the iceberg. I trust that other RENegades will fill you in on his backstory and probably recommend Sick Boi for insight into his frustrations from being misdiagnosed for years. I will just add a suggestion to check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before Ren was finally correctly diagnosed and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and stunning. Also if you want to understand the man behind the art (and why we all love him so dearly), check out his 1m subscribers video on defining success. Ren is not just a brilliant artist but a genuinely good human being who wants to inspire positive change in the world. Hope to see you deep down the Ren rabbit hole with the rest of us 🐰🕳️

Ren is a one of a one kind artist..he is independent so he does what ever he likes to do...therefore he can´t be put into a certain genre box because he is bending genres putting them together...which you will notice instantly when you go through his catalogue. Here in "Hi Ren" he made a fusion out of classical music elements combining with rap for instance..and he is additionally overall also a great storyteller...But when you more into bands he did street busking with his band "The Big Push" there you can see him in a band setting playing live on the street as well.but foremost medleys out of cover versions while his solo projects are made by his own.

I've been listening to this song and watching reactions to it for over one year now. You're possibly the first to outwardly express precisely how I felt upon first hearing it. I've never been a lyrics guy either. I think it took me over 30 years to realize that Robert Plant was singing about his dick in "Whole Lotta Love". Anyhow, Ren is the most unique artist I've experienced in my 57 years. Liked and subscribed.

A metalhead who likes musicals? Subscribed! Based on what you liked about this, you will likely enjoy the trilogy called Tales of Jenny & Screech. Ren shows his Bard side on this, but his all around talent shines so bright in this (and honestly, in all his art, he's authentic and unlike anyone else). Really consider doing more of his art and his stuff from his former band too, The Big Push (they did a cover/mash of War Pigs). Money Game 3 might be another you'll like.

He would watch jimmy hendrix youtube videos and alow them diwn to copy what hedrix did. Ren is one if the realist artists you will come across. The man is the modern Bard. He has spent his life in musical pursuits and has mastered storytelling. No one is doing quite what Ren does because Ren does everything, and has vast experience resources to draw from in his art. He didn't fall into a genre and get stuck there. If you'd like to see his band, maybe check out the busking videos. OR, if you want to see his "style", maybe check out the trilogy of songs that tells the story of Jenny and Screech.

I feel like I was watching myself see this masterpiece for the first time. I also mostly listen to metal and appreciate similar things as you mentioned and rarely pay attention to lyrics at least on first listen. Ren, however, has a very special talent to capture you in a way not many artists today can. I found myself absolutely immersed in what he was saying while at the same time trying to follow the musicianship like I usually do. After the first listen I was simply in awe of what I had just witnessed and simply had to replay it again and again to be able to fully grasp everything that was going on. And that was just this one song...after delving deeper into Ren's discography it became apparent that this was not just a one time fluke but merely the tip of the iceberg. You're in for a ride 😊
